VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Best All Time Sound Tracks
Boplicity 02-14-2001, 09:49 AM VH1 has been running a series of the top fifty all time best soundtracks. Of course, I often didn't agree and they left out some of my personal favorites. By the way, I'm asking your opinions because often to me the soundtrack is BETTER than the movie and I pay very close attention to the sound track.
Here are some of my all time favorites.
Exodus: The first soundtrack I ever bought
Shaft: The original movie
Titanic: hauntingly, achingly sad
The General's Daughter: Great use of field hollers and spirituals to enhance this Georgian mystery story.
South Pacific: The movie
West Side Story: The movie
Cookie's Fortune: Some good blues to back this Mississppi mystery story.
The Crow: The first Crow movie. A wonderful collection of popular metal bands of the day from the Cure, Pantera to The Thrill Kill Cult.
West Wing: The television show
Mission Impossible Two: Love Limp Bizkit's rousing title theme. Lots of other pounding music there too...the kind to play loud.
Wayne's World: The first one.
That's all I can think of right now, but there are many more I have tremendously emjoyed. I'd like to know your favorites too.

Dave Siff 02-14-2001, 10:41 AM Good topic!
My favorites are:
"Hair" (KILLER bass playing, just make sure to get the motion picture soundtrack, not the Broadway cast recording)
"Saturday Night Fever" (sure it's cheesy, but I dug it when I was 10)
and "Angus".. great pop-punk stuff on there from several bands.
Bruce Lindfield 02-14-2001, 10:57 AM There was a thread on this in another forum recently and I mentioned "Bullitt" - and discovered that Carole Kaye played on this. Great bassline to the main theme.
bassmonkeee 02-14-2001, 12:20 PM I think you can't go wrong with "Superfly."
Also, the "Dead Man Walking" soundtrack and score are great.
gweimer 02-14-2001, 12:20 PM Maybe not "best", but certainly has some great tunes:
The Commitments
Blues Brothers
Rushmore
Mysterious Island - I love Bernard Hermann
Victor, Victoria - "Le Jazz Hot"
jazzbo 02-14-2001, 12:41 PM Dream a Little Dream
Desperado
The Mambo Kings
South Park (Do musicals count?)
Shakespeare in Love
Batman (Score, not soundtrack)
Worst: Immortal Beloved. I don't want to hear snippets of Beethoven's pieces, I want to hear the whole thing.
cancerkitty 02-14-2001, 12:54 PM The Crow
Clerks
Spawn
The Matrix
Deeter 02-14-2001, 01:02 PM Some of my favs, though not necessarily the, "BEST," per se:
Swingers - S/T
Mo' Better Blues - S/T
Mars Attacks! - Score
Reservoir Dogs - S/T
funkopotimus 02-14-2001, 01:09 PM i think that dazed and cunfused is pretty sweet :)
ilike waynes world a lot, and those are the only two soundtracks that i can think of off the top of my head except for pulp fiction and reservoir dogs
...yeah, in the other thread, I mentioned Jesus Christ Superstar.
I just picked up the movie soundtrack to JCS @Tower, USED for $22. Locally, the stores were wanting $37 with the list price as $42! Are they kidding! I mean, c'mon, the soundtrack is about 30 years old. I keep hearing that cd prices are gonna come down...I haven't seen any evidence of that, have you?
Anyway, I never owned the movie soundtrack to JCS...I used to have the Original cast albums. I had forgotten how cool "What's The Buzz" is...bad bass playing on that one! "Everything's Alright" is nice, too. The title tune also smokes.
Eventually, I'm gonna re-aquire the Original Cast recording(& at ColumbiaHouse for a $9.98 Sale price).
I also like Hair, Shaft, & Superfly.
As far as Jazz sountracks-
Miles Davis' Ascenseur pour L'Echafaud(Escalator To The Scaffold). Interesting concept...Miles & band(Bop drum innovator Kenny "Klook" Clarke + some French musicians) improvise as they watch the film for the first time. This soundtrack has been re-issued of late...
Boplicity 02-14-2001, 06:42 PM Dang! I didn't know there had been another thread like this. Anyway, some of you reminded me of soundtracks I had forgotten and love.
Blues Brothers 2000:
I have nearly worn out this CD! The jam sessions with major blues names are priceless. This soundtrack was better than the movie.
Blues Brothers: How I love that CD!
Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon:
What a gorgeous soundtrack with cello work by YoYo Ma. BTW, Inever dreamed a martial arts movie would make me cry, but there I was at the end of the movie crying like a baby. Then I went straight to Media Play right after the movie and bought the soundtrack. The music is nominated for an Oscar, BTW!
Saturday Night Fever:
Not only is this the soundtrack for the movie, it is the soundtrack for the entire 70s.
Flashdance: For years, this was my number one exercise music.
Top Gun: That movie brought back so many memories and so does the soundtrack.

gruffpuppy 02-14-2001, 07:06 PM hey will you guys stop calling my thread "the other thread" :D
i will cast another vote for Hair, Superfly, and Quadrophenia
Dragonlord 02-14-2001, 09:40 PM I'm not THAT familiar with soundtracks, but I love Toto's Dune...it creates such an amazing atmosphere,I love to listen to it while reading Michael Moorcock's books.I also intend to buy the soundtrack to Conan,I've heard everyone say it kicks @$$,but I haven't got it yet...this money problem again...argh
Brendan 02-14-2001, 10:34 PM The Crow: That thing was like the movie, dark oppressive, and you feel better once it's over. (Good thing)
MI:2: Nice thing to pop in and play Video Games to. The perfect soundtrack for some serious buttkicking.
I really don't go after soundtracks that often, but these two grabbed me.
fakeschenk 02-14-2001, 10:58 PM Have you ever seen "Leaving Las Vegas"? The soundtrack is very very good, Jazzy and Subtle with some great songs done by Sting.
Christopher 02-15-2001, 12:49 AM Some of my faves:
Blade Runner
Crouching Tiger
Empire Strikes Back
Gattaca
Ghost in the Shell
Last Temptation of Christ
Naked Lunch
Spartacus
Trainspotting
Umbrellas of Chebourg
Until the End of the World
Vertigo
deanobg 02-15-2001, 12:59 AM Hi all
I'm going to have to cover some that have already been taken - Jesus Christ Superstar and also Blues Brothers.
I'm also a sucker for the Reservoir Dogs one (if that's the one with Little Green Bag?
Cheers
Dean
Marty Forrer 02-15-2001, 01:47 AM Forest Gump
Hair
JCS
Easy Rider
Phantom of the Opera
gweimer 02-15-2001, 04:55 AM Actually, since it's been mentioned, Quentin Tarantino has EXCELLENT taste in music on his soundtracks. We should probably toss in Pulp Fiction while we're at it - if only for the revival of "Jungle Boogie".
Acacia 02-15-2001, 05:05 AM Trick Or Treat (All Fastway tunes)
Decline of Western Civilization pt II, the Metal Years
River's Edge
Clerks (Berzerkerrrrr)

Turock 02-15-2001, 07:57 AM Jesus Christ Superstar
Easy Rider
metallicarules 02-16-2001, 05:29 PM My favorite which somebody should have mentioned already is the album "A Kind of Magic" by Queen which was the soundtrack for the movie Highlander.
Easily the best soundtrack ever is Rocky IV. Hands down. These songs encompass the abominable spirit of man and of champions. Plus, listen to these songs and then try not to want to go out and fight somebody.
Rob W 02-16-2001, 09:25 PM How about
Alexander Nevsky
by Sergei Prokoffiev ???
from the film by Eisenstein (1938 I think?)
Blackbird 02-16-2001, 09:57 PM My favorite movie soundtrack is La Bamba.
The second favorite is Forrest Gump.
Will C.
Bassin' 02-17-2001, 03:29 PM A Hard Day's Night- easily the best album during the Beatlemania period. The movie is good too. :)
Slaphappy 02-18-2001, 11:20 AM For me:
Until the End of the World
Dazed and Confused
Empire Records
and Singles! :D :D :D
rayzak 02-18-2001, 02:39 PM Has nobody mentioned the Soundtrack from the movie SINGLES?!! I'm very dissapointed in all of you. THE best soundtrack EVER!!!! 2 of Pearl Jams best songs, Smashing Pumpkins, Chris Cornell solo and with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, and for good measure, Hendrix. I've gotta go listen to it now.
...forgot about Sting's Bring On The Night. On the opening cut, "Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down...", Kenny Kirkland(RIP) takes one nasty solo. The live version of "Driven To Tears" is also pretty good.
I remembered this soundtrack as I was checking out Kirkland's lone solo cd this a.m.
Hey, Bruce Lindfield, there's a couple of killer Latin-ized Jazz Classics on this; Shorter's "Ana Maria" & Monk's "Criss Cross"...
craigb 02-19-2001, 11:53 AM JC Superstar (original cast)
The Big Chill - classic soul
Rocky Horror Picture Show
and from a previous life
Heavy Metal
Don Fabrizio 02-19-2001, 01:45 PM Of course A Kind Of Magic (Highlander)is the best soundtrack.
Another good soundtracks are...
-Godzilla
-MI:2
-South Park
Alvaro Martín Gómez A. 02-21-2001, 12:07 PM I'm a BIG fan of soundtracks, but i think that the soundtrack albums made nowadays are just a bunch of related songs made by request. I hate them. My idea of a soundtrack album is the music you hear in the movie or TV show. I don't know why people make a difference between "the soundtrack album" and "the score album". May someone please explain me this?
According to this conception, my favorite soundtracks are:
-Rocky. The "Fanfare for Rocky" is one of the greatest orchestral pieces made for the Silver screen that i've heard ever, and "Gonna fly now" gives me chills every time i hear it.
-The incredible hulk (TV show). You need to be a fan of the show. What a sensation is to recall scenes from the series while listening to this! This CD is not available in stores. It was made by Joe Harnell's request (he's the composer of the score), so it was released as a promo item only. I was lucky to find it at supercollector.com.
- Any compilation of James Bond main titles (original versions, of course).
-Any 60's & 70's television themes: Streets of San Francisco, hawaii 5-0, Charlie's angels, S.W.A.T., Kojak, Mannix, Mission: Impossible (the whole album by Lalo Schifrin is great), Twilight zone, Star trek, Dr. Who, The saint, the Irwin Allen's productions, etc.
-Classic cartoon underscores: Merrie melodies, Flintstones, Pink panther.
- And of course, the classic John Williams music: Jaws, Raiders of the lost ark, Superman, Star wars. I specially like his treatment of brass sections. BTW, the slide trombone is the other musical instrument in my heart. I never learned to play it, but i love a great trombone ensemble or a great soloist like Christian Lindberg.
Summarizing, my nickname should be "Nostalgia". :)
fretless5 02-21-2001, 07:38 PM West Side Story.
Superfly.
Apocolypse Now.
Bird.
The Rabbit of Seville.
This is Spinal Tap.
gweimer 02-21-2001, 10:24 PM The Rabbit of Seville.
Good one!
