sorry kids. I know I posted something like this before but - Does Paul Grey of Slipknot use a pick or his his fingers? if he uses his fingers all the time then he has got great plucking speed and endurance. Also, what kinda setup does he have? he ain't flashy but I love Slipknot and you gotta work hard to add more rhythm and lowend to 3 drummers two B-string playin guitarists a DJ and a hardcore singer. thanks again

I believe he uses a pick, and he uses a Wariwck bass. That's what I've been told, I don't know how you can tell what he's playing since he's virtually non-existant in the mix (I used to listen to Slipknot, *gag* :))

Brendan
02-14-2001, 11:38 PM
Yeah. He gets fills in the breaks, but that about the only time you hear him. And seeing them live, I know: He uses both, depending on the track. And for setup, I don't know. I couldn't get a good look from my perspective. An yeah, he works at it, but he does get lost in the mix a lot.

He uses a Warwick Corvette 4 string, tuned B-F#-B-E. He uses a pick on most songs, but on the Wait and Bleed video you can see he uses his fingers. And he's not totally non-existent in the mix, you just gotta listen for the bass, it's really clickety and fat. You may not be able to hear it real well but it does add low end. Oh yeah he also uses Ampeg amps (doesn't every "new metal" band?), don't know what model.
And Slipknot happens to be my favorite band so lay off :D

They are one a my favs too bro. i don't know about his tone being clickety but it is very fat and rumbly. he may only get heard in his bass fills but he makes the best of them. i respect this bassist for being able to keep up with those drummers. those guys can wale on those skins, damn. bbbbbbbbbangbbbbbbbboom.

Well, I've been asked That. A lot of people think it's just noise. But, then, with nine members, you have to listen repeatedly, each time, you need to focus on a specific track, vocals, drums, guitar, DJ, ect, and you start to peice it together, and instead of noise, you hear a intricate mix of music. Of course, you just might hate that stuff anyway, so what I just said might not apply.

TT
02-20-2001, 08:41 PM
theres no real guitar riffs or musical sense in it more of a pulseing beat that's it. To me this band is lucky to go this far, just because theirs nine members doesn't mean their good.

Sorry hard to type when I'm sick. I understand the english language very well, and sometimes things just don't come out correctly. It's quite obvious that I hate slipknot, for many reasons. I'm not going list them, due to the fact that I might start a flame. I got a few suggestions for you, Marcus Miller (is a real bass player that deserves respect) Mark King ( Is in level 42, and is basically the fastest slapper nexted to v.wooten.) Stanley Clarke is another great bass player, let's not forget good ol' Geddy Lee from rush. These are some bassplayers to look up too. BTW slipknot is gay for the fact that they beat them selves up on stage. I mean thats gotta show you how imature they are. You don't see Marcus Miller punch his singer in the head during a middle solo. I personally hope that the whole slipknot band reads this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if your band has more than 4 members that play electric instruments than its just gonna end up as noise

why dont they take off their stupid masks and write some good ****ing songs?

Brendan

I dunno. It's all opinion. I've seen em live, and the mix is fine, nothing really gets lost, and I happen to like em. I know there's a lotta you guys that don't like them becuase their different by a quite a bit, but any jackass who calls any of this new stuff "new metal" and spells is N-U should be shot. I just happen to like them. Simple. Some people hate them with a passion. Simple. I don't like to argue about it, because nobody wins. I still like them, you still hate them. We waste time getting nowhere.

those other bassists that TT mentioned are obviously great. but they have gotten enough f*cking respect from all the old school kiss asses on this slightly liberal/ slightly conservative/ slightly dictatorial area of bass discussion. i am tired of hearing about them just as much as some of you are tired of hearing about feildy (who now i care nothing about). i just wanna post something different for a change if thats ok. and if its not then i will post it anyway. errr.

PS. yo mamma

I wouldn't consider them old school, I just think slipknot is high intense noise. Don't get me wrong I do listen to metal : Sepultera,Slayer,Metallica only master of puppets.

But some of us LIKE "high intense noise"! :D It's called playing what you FEEL, not trying to be the best at something.

just get my point ok dude? i love Jeff Ament and that dude from STP and Nirvana. man those guys (grunge rock) were my bands. that was what i grew up on. and i love old school sh*t too. but it has been discussed into the ground plenty for my taste ya know? thats enough. we get it. Jaco was a god, and Geddy is still kickin. Wooten can play like a freak and whoever else. whatever. thats killer. but now... ya get me? those dudes wont be topped. but they wont keep makin new tunes either and that is what i am after. i am probably the most open minded dude i know about most things so thats why i wanna get y'all to explore even if ya hate it. just dont preach the same old noise bout the same old sh1t.

k?k?k?

Guys:

Go listen to "Do nothing bitchslap" by slipknot. It is the only song I have heard where you can really hear the bass. It almost doesnt sound like them. It from their early stuff.

TT
03-03-2001, 11:25 PM
I heard that song and I admit that he's pretty good but I dunno maybe an old bass player or something :)

Wes I AM
03-04-2001, 12:25 PM
Nope, thats the same dude. He was one of the original members and has never been replaced. You can't just hear a bands songs and automatically assume that an individual musician in the band is whack. They contribute what needs to be contributed to their style of music. He's a good player.

I think they like the "music is all that matters" image and try to bring that out in interveiws. But then they go and do a thing like wear masks and have little characters. Like members are not know usually as "the drummer" or "the bassist" but are known as "the clown" or " the pig dude". Hmmmm shows how much they really care about the music.

I have never liked slipknot that much, I guess just not my taste. I did read how ever that there next album is going to be a Techno rap type thing. My question is, what the heck can nine people do on a techno rap c.d. They wont be playing there instruments, thats for sure. Maybe they will all get really drunk and beat the crap out of each other at every show. All I know is that nobody from that band made me feel like they had any musical talent, besides beating on theings with a steady beat.

Mark King took the funkiness out of slap. He's the reason you hear slap on Muzak now. He is the anti-Larry Graham.
BTW, FUGGIT slipknot rules.

What I have heard of Slipknot is utter noise , it is so dire. The bass is completely buried beneath the extreme barriers of noise! If you want to listen to noise that is actually good check out a Japanese band called Melt Bananna I'm not sure if anyone will know of them but they are good and the bass is fully in the mix , the way it should be.

Its true that paul grey guy has a lot of hidden talent i used to like a slipknot a little,
i mean enough to download some of their songs from napster, and i got some of those old demo songs and i said to myself S**t that guy can really play, and i like how that guy screams and the show they put on i think its cool and fun to watch, but i'm all about punk (matt freeman) and grunge players (Krist Novoselic), and of course Les claypool, Flea, Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, etc etc..
have a nice day and god bless you all.

..sigh...Here, Food for though (Previously posted by myself)

Slipknot? Slipknot is about fury. Fury, transferred into music will not be, ah, pleasin(?) to many. They represent that feeling of absolute bloodwrath that many disenfranchised, alienated kids feel. They are as much the Zen of the youth culture as Gardening or car repair is to another generation (or even different ends of the same demographic spectrum). To say they are image based is as much a misconception as Mudvayne, or even the Arty Tool, or Zepplin, or Black Sabbath. Image happens to be something many take as a bad thing. Paganini had the image of a wildman, and yet his works are respected. His persona did not reflect his music. To that extent, Slipknots aggression and bombast is not a calculated marketing ploy, but just another aspect of the people, not necessarily the music. For some reason, the image is confused with "taking away fromt the music"...Image is something everyone has. Maybe Slipknot embraces it. Slipknot may not be so much a masked bunch of men. To many, many youths, they represent the alienation that they feel, both consciously, and in their Id. Suffice to say, taking them at face value is not advisable. To take them personally, as the manifestation of your anxiety, frustration, aggression, anger, pathos, and psychosis is a better way to feel/listen to them.

Or, I might just be crazy. Take your pick.

Slipknot are actually much deeper than most people assume. You have to buy and listen to the albums to get it...

Like, the suits and masks: Sure, they all dress the same, but the point they are making is that people can dress identical and still look different. It's a plea for individuality.

Yes, there are some Slipknot fans who listen to them because of the image. However, look at the CD collections of these people and you'll most likely see Korn, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Marilyn Manson, Crazy Town and Limp Bizkit in the collection. This isn't representative of what Slipknot are about; it's representative of how shallow nu-metal(and people) are. The pussies go around listening to and 'representing' all the pop-metal bands around.

As for Paul, on the Wait and Bleed video at least, he plays a 6 string Carvin, in lefthand, finger style.

I read somewhere that if Slipknot has to, he'll drop trou and take a poopie right there on stage. Is that true? Whoa.
