VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : That guy from Nirvana

I think the guys name was Kris Noveselick or something. Anyway, I was listening to old Nirvana today and realized that this guys bass lines are about on the Michael Anthony level. Can the guy really play if he had too? What is the big goof up to these days? The only real memory I have of him is the big fool throwing a bass up the air and it landing on his head.

Yeah Krist Novoselic, that guy could play. Now hes in another seattle band I forget their name but it ends in 66 I think. Anyway I think he was pretty good, well I think anyone that is better than me is good, when I get up to your level JWC ill probably turn on a lot of successful bassists too, because I will be better than them, for now though he came up with some creative, granted easy lines, kept good rhythm, and had great stage presence, thats enough for me right now to say he was a good bassist.

not everyone can be/has to be on the Michael Manring/Geddy Lee/Jaco/whatever level of talent. Nobody was particularly virtuosic in Nirvana--Kurt Cobain was probably the most talented of the three, though he was very self-effacing about his guitar playing. as for Krist, I like some of his riffs on Bleach, but mostly he played simply. (and there's nothing wrong with that!)

though he is about the goofiest-looking bass player I've ever seen. (not counting me)

Mikey, whats up with you bashing me. I didn't say anything about my level of playing. Did I fool?

krist novoselic is also on a cd called The No WTO Combo or somethin like that. its a cd he and jello biafra put together as one time kinda thing. hes in another band too, i forgot the name though.

and i think dave grohl has the most talent of the three. you guys gotta see the drum duels he does at foo fighters concerts with taylor hawkins.

...word on the street is that certain "legit" players ghosted for Novaselic on the records(like Patitucci on "Heart-Shaped Box"). Could be a rumor, I'm not sure.
It's an age-old practice; a guy may be able to bluff through a "live" performance; a studio environment is something different(usually).

How did I bash u, JWC, I was saying id do the same thing! U read too much into my messages, u fool, it was not sarcastic but rather the truth, its logic, when people acheive a certain playing or whatever status, most not all, will look down on those below them, and that can't do what they can, and consider them not as good. I said id do the same thing as u. Now if I wanted to bash u id bring up that gun topic, and stick some Canadian sense in your head, but I have not gone their, so dont tell me im bashing u when im in agreement, damn.

I know for a fact that Krist Novoselic never had anyone ghost for him when Nirvana recorded because i am a really big nirvana fan, and he is a legit player, listen to some of the bootlegs when they played live or the muddy banks of wishkah (i'm not just saying this because i love nirvana), he's probably one of my favorite bass players, his tone is great, and he plays his bass right above his shin, tell me thats not hard, the guy has tons of talent, and put on a great show. You can't diss Krist.

Heart Shaped Box is one of the best songs that I know of, and the bass on that song is just plain weird and absolutely original.
But I also know songs where he isn't original at all, I think he just didn't care.

02-24-2001, 09:02 AM
ok, if he's not original sometimes, give me a line that he plays that isn't,

does annyone know what kinda bass he plays? i like his tone..

Nomadic Herder

He used a Thunderbird, a Ripper (So Ive read) and a Fender Jazz Bass.

One of his basses was a ripper, but he had a few others that are pretty bizzare looking. One is a jazz looking thing with a weird upper horn.. there's another that sort of resembles a thunderbird

uhm, bassguy? yeah man, he had some wicked lines (notably "Lounge Act" and "Lithium") but like, listen to most of their stuff ... Smells Like Teen Spirit has one of the most boring ass bass lines i've ever heard, with so much room to make it more interesting ... most of Nirvana's stuff is pretty generic, bud. Not just the bass, but Kurt's guitar work as well .. power chords anyone? :o

cyklone777

He wears his bass like the lowest I've ever seen anyone. Well with those long ass gorilla arms I can see how he could play :D

the one that looked a bit like a Thunderbird was a black Gibson RD Artist, which he threw into the air and hit himself on the head with at the MTV awards- a bit dumb as those basses are very heavy (maple body and neck), and he was bleeding after. he was also using this bass for Nirvana's infamous appearance on UK show "The Word" doing Teen Spirit (at the beginning of which Kurt Cobain said "Courtney Love of sensational group Hole is the greatest f*** in the world").

the "jazz looking thing" was an Ibanez Black Eagle bass.

nirvana is so ungeneric its not funny,
they created their own style,
therefore they're original, and i think Kurt is the best songwriter yet.

its true he used a ripper, but he never used a fender jazz bass, he always had obscure looking basses, he used mainly gibsons and i think he used bc rich a couple times.

As said before, Krist is now in a band called Sweet 75.
His bass lines weren't real complicated, but he played them fast, and they sounded great.
Many of them were quite catchy, which added to the greatness of Nirvana's music.

Does every bass line have to be a big fancy smancy bass riff????? I think he was pretty damn talented, not the greatest (becuz thats CLIFF), but he was pretty good, I happen to L\like some of theose "boring" root notin' basslines, like adam Clayton's for example,

P.S.--- I LOVE THAT CLIP OF KRIST THROWING HIS BASS IN THE AIR, AND IT COMING DOWN AND SMACKING HIM ON TOP OF HIS MELON, I CRACK UP EVERY TIME I SEE IT, (I WISH I HAD IT ON TAPE)

Robot-trashcan

Bass isn't always flashy or even complicated sometimes. Krist just supported the sound of the band by playing less. Remember Nirvana consisted of mostly four chord songs and if Krist had played anymore it would have probably detracted from the main emphasis, the song itself. Nirvana still rocks and hopefully they'll release the supposed box set soon.

When did he throw his bass up and get hit in the head with it??? And where can I go to download that, or where can I see it? Sounds hilarious

bassguy187

He threw his bass up in the air at the Video Music Awards, I'm gonna guess that it was 92 or 93.
check it out.

Yeah, Krist tossed his bass up in the air during the 92 or 93 MTV Music Awards. It was funny as hell! You might try to download it at Nirvana website or MTV.com.

I totally agree with bassguy, Lounge Act is one of the best Nirvana bass lines. Listen to Stay Away too, thats a great one. Also, Dumb is cool, and Mr. Moustache. If you think Krist isn't creative, you haven't listened to Nirvana enough, or you just haven't been paying attention. Don't say that Krist isn't creative, that's blind ignorance!

I know for a fact he never used anything but a pick.
have a nice day.

Krist is okay , I like some of his bass lines. 'Lounge act' has to be 1 of my favorites, the tone is so great on this track. For this type of music he is pretty cool because loads of other bassists just follow the guitar. I like the way how he starts off some of Nirvana's tracks with the bass to prove that he is actually playing something interesting. Others would just start at the same time as the guitar so they can hide their playing especially if they are crap , not all bassists but some of them.

yeah, its about time Krist got some damn respect....

yeah alot of Krist's lines are great. I own the "Nirvana Bass Collection" book and it has notation and tablature for various songs off many albums and many of them are awwwesome.

The bass lines from Hairspray Queen (also called Disco Godess) and Love Buzz are great! Lounge Act, as said before, has an awesome bass line. He has some good stuff, but it seems like half the lines he wrote werent even the best he could do. I think he just made stuff that sounded good, he didnt try to make the most complicated lines or anything. Even though most of his lines are pretty simple, they sound awesome!
