What would cause a thread on TB to be closed?

I was reading a thread and went to post a reply and it was closed

:crying:

Why?

Talking about politics or religeon, anywhere apart from the lounge.

Or threads that just become rambles.

Or ones where people start being nasty to each other.

Read the rules, its all in there.

Any thread that heavily violates two or more rules will get closed pretty quickly.

But if it's light, a mod can usually just edit posts instead of getting rid of the whole thread.

sometimes threads get closed if they get too far off-topic, while mods try to clean them up some.

most mods are open to re-opening threads, even ones that turn controversial, if the interest is there to continue the gist of the topic. as always, the rules are pretty comprehensive on this.

if you have a question about a thread in particular, feel free to email or pm the mod who closed it for an explanation. :)

Let's not forget the last Thread I saw that
was recently closed:

McCartney on drugs (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=130171&highlight=McCartney)

The Topic was steering into "Drugs -- Help or Hinder Creativity..."

They had to put a Stop to that!
Controversy begin to rear it's ugly head.

Not Political.
Not Religious.

It was on Topic and of valid concern and debate to Musicians.

What would cause a thread on TB to be closed?

Anything Controversal.

Maybe it was closed because it was a topic that had been done to death a hundred times before?

Did you bother to PM the mod who closed it and asked why it was closed?

If the criteria for closing a Thread is because it had been
done to death a hundred times before at TB...

Better close all threads regarding Warwick or Fender,
because it's all in the archives...

Uh Oh!

Getting nasty.

Time to Close her down! :D

So you've taken these issues up with the Moderators then?

DO NOT post your complaint publicly on the forums. If you have a problem with a moderator's actions, PM or email the moderator privately. If the moderator's response is unsatisfactory, email the administor (username: Paul).

lets just bitch in public instead of simply asking...

Donne, I closed it for one reason only.

Drugs are illegal (right or wrong is not my point)

Paul doesn't need a friggin lawsuit cause some dumb kid took a TB post as meaning "Do Heroin or Coke and play as good as hendrix or entwistle, sing as good as Joplin or Morrison, etc". Catches a cab to the local dealer and shots himself up dead... Mom and Pop "wonder why Johnny turned bad" and starts browsing the family computers history.

threads about illegal stuff get closed too.

Donnie, take you issues up with Paul, or find another site to discuss anything you want. This isn't music related, so I am moving it to OT. I would close it, but I don't really feel like being responsible for the irony of it.

Should have said that in my first post, shouldnt I? But sometimes you just cant necessitiate for every opportunity.

You know, sometimes people astound me. Just because we're on the internet doesnt suddenly mean drugs are legal...

How's that work since the internet isn't limited to just the US? FE: if somebody in Jamaica posted somethign about smoking weed to increase creativity(granted it would just make things funnier, but still), would that be againt forum rules since it's not illegal there?

Well seeing as he said : "since the internet isn't limited to just the US? "

It's not a question of judgement - you're just wrong!! ;)

No doubt the internet is international... BUT Paul resides AND the server resides in the US of A and is heald to the laws of this country. In this country, drugs are illegal

once again, for those of you playing at home:

Drugs aren't illegal in the US of A, they are controlled substances, subject to the Controlled Substances Act.

Get it right.

James Hart

Whatever

if I or anyone in my country get caught with LSD or Coke or Heroin (the controlled substances in question in the THREAD I CLOSED), I would be arrested and stand trial and go to jail. To me that means it's illegal. Call it whatever the f*** you want!

Paul, since this is now a completely public Mod flogging with me center ice... How about a ruling?

do I let people discuss using *controlled substances* to better playing and creativity in your forum?

Well I wasn't trying to spark these types of arguements...

Actually the point of my original posting was why is a thread closed. the thread I am referring to was about Sting vs. Paul McCartney. While I personally think this isn't the most creative thread out there - there was nothing illegal or lewd in the thread AT ALL.

I understand about drugs or graphic sex related postings - but paul and sting? What happened that was so wrong?

I wasn't flogging you, I was just saying that drugs aren't illegal per se, just some of them you need the DEA's permission to have on your person.

Besides it's not like that particular debate hasn't happened before. From what I've seen here and at other forums, discussing a celebrity's drug use hasn't been an issue, but discussing your own is.

I'd love to but I can't see why it would be closed unless there were many McCartney threads going at the same time. It didn't help that the thread starter posted the McCartney thread in the DB forums to start with.

Why it was closed is anybody's guess. *shrug*

but you missed this point:
Rule #5: Questioning a Moderator...
If you have a disagreement with a moderator (If your thread gets deleted, if you get a warning, etc.), DO NOT post your complaint publicly on the forums. If you have a problem with a moderator's actions, PM or email the moderator privately. If the moderator's response is unsatisfactory, email the administor (username: Paul).

We take all complaints seriously, but posting your dissatisfaction publicly will result in a rule violation.

We all do this *job* for free... I saw yet another "vs." thread and closed it. If you would have PMed me and asked, maybe I would have rethought my action and reopened it for you... maybe not, but we would have had dialog about it.

James Hart

no sweat... just felt under fire from many directions at once.

But that doesn't help anybody understand what posts are likely to be closed - you are just saying basically : "at the whim of the moderator - then ask them"

I think the point of this thread is to determine what kind of thread will get closed down - to say that you should ask the moderator is not very helpful in this context?

So - say you have ideas for several hundred different threads - should you ask a moderator about every one and which moderator would you ask? :hmm:

I think it would be much better for everyone if there were clear guidelines that everybody could see, about which kind of threads are likley to be closed - then posters don't have to waste their time posting them and moderators don't have to waste their time closing them!!

WIN -WIN!! :)

Not my point.

I was simply asking why. I wasn't asking for it to be reopened. I wasn't saying it was wrong or right - just simply asking. I wasn't trying to point my finger at the moderators and scream at them - I was just asking a simple question. It was EVERYONE else that took a simple point and just drove it in the ground until they made a nmountain out of a molehill...

The simple aswer would have been "We close *** VS. *** threads".

I am not challenging or complaining about a moderator either. If it's taken as such then you all have missed my point.

Thanks

for sure Bruce...

Rule #3: Off-limitTopics
Controversial topics started for the purpose of creating "mega threads" will be VERY closely moderated (ie, "Off Topic" forum discussions on religion & politics). At times, such threads may be banned altogether - be sure to check 'sticky' postings from the forum moderators for current policies.

got a few stickied here http://www.talkbass.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=28

In a public forum, NOT PM or Email, I think I replyed at closing with "we close these kinda threads" I'll make a note to be a little more specific, and yes you are... and I'm the mod in question.

it's not a thing really, I jumped in because of Donne's issue only to find the thread is ultimately questioning my motives...

I'm saying to EVERYONE... got a problem with anything I do, talk to me... I'm on my email 24/7

No, I'm not. I know what my motive is when I post something. And there was no animosity in anything I said. I was kind of taken aback by some the replies from you guys. It was a simple question that's all.
