I have a kramer aluminum neck with walnut (I think) inserts that were stained with Minwax Dark Walnut stain. It's really hard to play fast on this bass because my thumb will not slide across the back. What can I do?

Fast fret or FingerEase along the back of the neck can do wonders.

+1 on the fast fret.

also could try a poly coat on top....the minwax stuff really doesnt leave a very smooth finish alot, could try a urathane type coating, or a tungoil type of thing

I actually had a similar situation with an Ibanez I had...I tired putting things on it...after awhile I got ticked off, took everything off (mmm sandpaper) clear down to the bare wood. I didn't have time to finish it before a gig I had, so I took it as-is and played it....still haven't put anything on it.

Do like Jaco Pastorius and eat chicken and get the grease all over your fingers. He made his strings slick this way and I bet it'd work on the back of your neck. Or the KY jelly option is good.

Sand the glaze off the finish with some 400 or 600 grit sandpaper...like they do with pool cues.
