This is my old Meisel ply that I sold when I got the LaScala. I played it a bit last night; it was newly set up and was wearing Obligatos. I had a tinge of seller's remorse, but you can't keep all of them. Great f***in' bass, though.
Whoops, that might be a bad link, try this:

Sorry for pushing the limits of Spammishness, but we did a show last night that was videotaped by Bravo Network, for a production called "Djangomania", which will apparently air in December. If you insist on seeing what I look like during battle, here's your chance. Judging by the cameraman's techiques, you should be able to count my nose hairs.

Wil...I've been trying to get my wife to let me part with the last vestiges of hair on my head, and go with your current route, but she doesn't seem to like the idea. My kids, on the other hand, say "Yeah Dad....shave it!". I just am attracted to the low-maintenance approach.
I used to have a buzz cut and an honest-to-god Fu Manchu moustache back in th early 80-s. I got a lot of work in punk bands....

HA HA HA HA!!! I didn't even realize this was the DB forum!!! I can however strap my backpack to the gas tank and I went to Lansing, MI to Elderly to pick up my old Hartke 4000 bass head. They thought I was nuts. I've also brought home a case of beer, burgers and fries...you name it. People love it when you go through the drive thru with it.

Anyway Kim played a little on this wonderful Morelli i'm selling and just wanted to say that he's sounding pretty damn good and will be joining us here at TBDB soon.

Actually, I fit it in my 98 Volvo V70 quite nicely. I even have room for two Schertler Pub speakers, 2 wheeler, Mackie Mixer, 2 speaker stands, mic stand, and music stand when I'm providing the PA system. Oh, and another player can fit in the front seat if he doesn't bring much gear.
Sucker is heavy as hell though. It destroys bass wheels. Sax player friend is an airline mechanic, and he has welded my Ideal wheel back together a few times.
If you are serious about hearing it, it is the one used on 3 cuts on the
Sampler Page (http://www.talkingblues.net/talkinbass.html#Monte%20Butts) . It is used on the Bob Norris Trio cuts:
Take The "A" Train
Stella By Starlight
Bob's Blues.

Rib Depth: 8.5" (upper bout) 9.5" (lower bout) is the measurements on mine if I remember. What are yours?
Really, I'm only 5'7" and I have no trouble getting around on it, although I don't spend a lot of time in thumb position. Working on that though.

Thanks for the link, I'll listen from work tomorrow (where I have a T-1 line instead of dial-up speed).
In a strange coincidence I am an ex-airline mechanic. Never fixed any bass wheels though. Actually, that gives me an idea, ever thought about a main landing gear from a 727. It's about the right size for that bass and might even stand up to the weight. :)

Non-existent. I tried to create one (gasp!) with the few players around here. Most don't care much to do anything beyond wedding gigs and playing the same 10 tunes, and others laugh at my concepts (fusing Greek rhythms and standards to Jazz etc.)
Time to return to NYC, I've had enough. Not even a luthier here, my bass needs a lot of work. i have tendinitis or something like that, I can't play well anymore, I need a doctor. I shall return to Brooklyn by next year.

I forgot the most important part. My accupuncturist was a pro-bassist while he was in school. We actually talked about technique-related factors with regard to bass playing and he knew both sides of the issue, medical & musical.
FractalUniverse

uhm...that's cool, my accupuncturist was an old lady and she wasn't that good!... i might try it someday in the future, but alternative medicine it's too damn expensive down here.
and by the way i have injuried myself doing things that are not related with playing the instrument itself, at least that's what i think, cause i have good e-bass technique according to my teacher.... and i'm also supposed to have good piano technique..... the problem happened when i started travelling with my amp, and i must say, that i did some stupid things..... and back on topic, i'm studying the possibility of the surgery alternative.

Actually, that might have been towards the end of the night! This gig was at a DEAN and DELUCA Wine Room...the type of place where the requests were along the lines of "Do you guys do any Fourplay or Boney James?". You know, real jazz. We call the seed money "bait".
BenderR
09-05-2004, 10:54 AM
When you end up with less "bait" than you started out with, that's the definition of a bad night.
As far as the Fourplay or Boney James issue even that could be worse. I once took a friend and an acquaintence to hear Paul Warburton & Dale Bruning play and the acquaintence called the very cool jazz that was being played that night "dinner music". I was ready to scream.
I guess that the forces of musical darkness have succeeded in convincing many among the unwashed masses that funk, fusion and smooth-jazz are "real" jazz. I don't hate any of these kinds of music (except smooth-jazz which I hate with a passion) but I mind it when it is represented as being jazz. I mind it a lot more when these genres are said to be "real jazz" displacing the standards and jazz tunes we all love from their rightful place.
The worst insult I ever got was from a smooth-jazz loving friend. A fellow that thinks Yanni is the greatest composer since Mozart (no kidding). He said that I was ahead of my time because the music I played over 30 years ago was (in his opinion) smooth-jazz. My retort was that in fact it was real jazz but that it sounded like smooth jazz becuse I wasn't playing it very well. The strangest thing about it all is that he never understood that he had insulted me.

But for me, it's a form of music that compels me to find a rusty icepick, coat it with the anthrax virus, and shove it really deeply into my eardrum, twirling it around until my eyeballs bug out.
But that's just me.

Amen! I didn't read it either, just found it on Google.
To me, a lot of it sounds unfinished, like "Adult Contemporary" music that need to go back to the studio for a vocal track. Some of it also sounds really dated to me. It just sounds really overprocessed.
I just tuned into a "jazz" fest broadcast on BET yesterday...the first artist featured was Freddie Jackson, a good contemporary R&B singer. So I thought, all right, I'll see what comes up after the commercial. Up next was Bebe Winans, an excellent gospel singer. I don't really care what the music is called, but I felt like listening to some jazz. I ended up turning on Cirrus radio.
On a positive note; Arturo Sandoval is coming to Maui this weekend

Y'know, as for the accordion thing -- I saw a documentary the other day on the tube about Musette music. You know: French accordion stuff. There was a player on there who was talking about that music, about Django, about swing -- I think his last name was Galliano. Anyway, this guy was completely amazing on his accordion -- fast, smooth, fresh and interesting. He performed a very interesting piece of new music with a bass clarinetist....
Mostly I agree about the accordion, but never forget that amazing music can come from anywhere! I'd be proud to play with those guys. They bad.

Do you mean the accordion thingie, Wil? The one I saw Galliano play was all buttons, no keys at all. It was large.
I think accordions are spoken of in terms of the number of reeds per voice, aren't they? Plus, aren't they usually tuned a bit out of whack to get chorus effects?

Nice pic. Amazing that you can smile, while, directly behind you are written the words that strike fear into the bravest of musicians;
"OPEN MIC"
Speaking of open mic (and sorry for the sidetrack), Bay Area jazz singer Kitty Margolis is staying in the hotel where I gig regularly, and has promised to sit in with us over the week to come. Better still, alto god John Handy is also on the island, and he brought his pal, bassist Harley White, along. They are all friends, so I'm looking at a good week coming up. When I was in HS, we actually had a guy in the marching band that played slab. A freshman pulled an appropriately painted wagon behind him with a big ole Acoustic 370 rig on it - one of those with the ridiculous folded horn that you couldn't even hear 6 feet from it, but would scramble an egg at 100'.
Anyway, they'd march in and the frosh would plug the amp into an extension running from one of the light poles. It was pretty funny.

I grew up in Philadelphia, home of the Mummers Parade on New Year's Day. I have seen marchers playing and carrying double bass several times in Mummers string bands. They hang the bass over one shoulder by a strap and lean slightly backward to stay balanced while they march and play. And, for all you warm-weather residents, please appreciate that they and all other musicians accomplish this marching/playing feat on New Years Day, often in sub-freezing weather and sometimes while it is snowing.

That was my first gig on a DB. I played with Greater Overbrook string band. One of the rules is that string bands are not allowed to use wheels (or weren't at that time), so double bassists came up with several methods of strapping the bass. I was 14yo and 98lbs. Between the the costumes, and carrying a double bass on a strap it all looked pretty ridiculous.

We marched down Broad Street from Vet Stadium to City Hall, performing several times along the way. Judging takes place at City Hall. On the first note of our theme, my G string broke and I spent the rest of the show trying to play the bass lines on the remaining strings. :rollno: Not that the bass lines were all that complex, but I could practically fit my forearm between the strings and the fingerboard.
Here's a good pic of the bass straps:

Remember Woody Allen's "Take The Money And Run"? His character plated cello in a marching band...sit down, play a few notes, stand up, walk a few steps, sit down , play, etc. Funny s**t.

The photography style looks familiar, Robin. Did your Dad also shoot some shots of Bob Ross' basses? He's been the topic of discussion round here from time to time...

No, but he should have. He's specializes in inanimate objects (like bass players).

Nice pic, Robin. The bass is really nicely displayed...you know how we sometimes get gigs because people like the look of the double bass. When the check arrives...don't bother me a bit!
Are gigs with Santa one of the benefits of living so so close to the north pole?

LOL Yep. Totally. He is the coolest looking guy. His wife is an artist and she sits there drawing him (and all of us, actually) at our gigs. It's kinda cute.
Don't laugh too hard though - apparently this guy opened for Miles (http://bechler-arts.com/charlie/charlie-bio.html) back in the day. I'm glad I didn't know that before I started playing with hm. That would be my cue to freak. Luckily, he's super-cool though.

Here's a picture of me with the Kay that I'm borrowing over break, while my carved bass that I'm renting from school gets fixed.
Are you saying I'm fat? and have a bit of magic to me?

Very impressing Marcus ! that's exactly what it is ! a former auto control center not yet turned into a loft, studio, what not: Bad acoustics and cold. Just the right place to play free jazz and bang your bass col legno.

Finally -- some pictures taken this century. These were taken recording on a project I did last summer http://www.EmileWestergaard.com I don't sit when I play, but did so for the recording so as to be a little more consistent on the mic.

Thanks! I think they did a pretty good job of it. I just played bass and didn't have much of a hand in the production end of it. Although the cello line on 'Don't Make Yourself...' was originally my bass solo, I couldn't get a good take of it so they redid it -- the ol' arco chops just weren't there to pull off a long sweeping line like that. I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard that they re-recorded it. I was cringing at the thought that what I did was going to get out :)

I did the same thing last year; when the producers wanted me to play an arco line on a CD, I think they were really hearing a cello line in their heads. Of course, it just didn't sound right on the bass. So I suggested a friend of mine, a lovely local girl who plays beautifully and happens to look fantastic while doing so. She came in and just enthralled everyone in the studio, and I ended up looking like a genius for recommending her. It was the best track I never played.

Hey Neils...
There's probably not that many big bluegrass festivals in Scotland....I needed them to keep from bleeding to death...
As for the rest of the diseases (besides the killer hangover), when I got the Chris a year ago or so, it pretty well cured my GAS for the time being.......
