Hi all,

As I promised a while ago, the DVD version of the 1998 Artist’s Profile TV show about me is now available. It’s an hour long version of a PBS documentary that contains interviews, live and studio performance footage (including a little with Michael Hedges) and some candid shots in the studio with Attention Deficit. The tunes included are:

No Wontons for Elvis
Monkey Businessman
Red Right Returning
Diagonal Head Trauma
Snakes Got Legs
Bouree
The Book of Living and Dying
The Enormous Room
My Three Moons
The Fire Sermon
La Sagrada Familia

The cost is $25 US (that includes the shipping). For those of you who are interested please send a check or money order to:

Michael Manring
3542 Fruitvale Ave
PMB 109
Oakland, CA 94602-2327
USA

Please make checks/money orders out to “Michael Manring”, include your name and address, and make sure to let me know it‘s the Artist‘s Profile DVD you‘d like. I’ll do my best to get them out quickly, but please have patience if I’m a little slow!

Thanks!
Michael

Michael, what region are these DVD's? Region 1 = NTSC or multiregion?

Good news, anyway. I may be sending you a check.

Sounds great. I'll add it to the Christmas list I give my wife :)

Oh right, MKS -- good point about the region. I’m actually not sure what format it‘s in and nothing is indicated on the packaging. Is there an easy way I can find out?

Hey Michael!

Any chance of doing Paypal? If not...I guess I'll just have to wait for the check to sail to the other coast...

I second that request :)

id love to order this dvd from you Michael but my(uk)bank charges a flat fee of $20 just to draw up a money order and they dont allow personal cheques to be cashed international :(

im sure paypal would be a great option for many of your non US based fans if you could manage it?

ive purchased cds/items from both matt garrasion and dean peer this way in the past few months and its saved a lot of time/pain that snail mailling payments international has caused me in the past

If not i guess i could get one of my US based friends to purchase and ship it for me for xmas......

all my dvds say NTSC on the bottom right hand corner of the box...NTSC is the one that will work in north america (or at least USA, i can't remember)...PAL is the one that works everywhere else

Michael

Will you be selling copies of the DVD (preferably PAL version) at your forthcoming short tour of England with Steve Lawson?

Hi guys,

I found out from the manufacturer that the DVD is in NTSC Region 1 format. My webmaster is currently in the process of setting up a new Paypal store at www.manthing.com and I should be able to sell the Artist’s Profile DVD there soon, but I’m sorry to say it’ll be a little while before it‘s ready. Since the DVD is in NTSC format I probably won’t be bringing copies with me to Europe. Sorry about that!

Chaps,

I'm pretty sure that my DVD player here in the UK will play region 1 discs - many do now, and I have a number of US DVDs, so I'll be ordering one when you get Paypal arranged. I don't think the PAL/NTSC thing is an issue, just the region number.

I'm also sure that if you brought a bundle over to the uk in November and left them in Steve's teaching space, that they'd get sold quickly enough! It's like a bass Alladdin's cave in there.......

Looking forward very much to the tour, I'll see how many I can get to.

Cheers,

Phil

i agree with the other guys. almost all of us would prefer to pay by Paypal.

i'm pretty sure that the PAL/NTSC video standard will be an issue if you intend to watch the DVD on your TV. i'm not sure if its going to affect watching the DVD on your computer though.

I agree. I would take the risk of it not playing and buy one.

Hey Michael,

I just received your DVD, and must say it is incredibly well produced... flows well... much more content than I thought possible in an hour. Great entertainment and inspiration.

Thanks!

A bump just in time for Christmas! ;)

Michael - Do you still have any copies of this available? I'd like to get a copy (now that I've figured out how to get my DVD player to play region-free) and I've just missed out getting one from Steve. Can we pay by Paypal or money transfer?

Please PM me details if you need to...

All the very best, and have a very peaceful Christmas and New Year.

Best regards,
Mike

Sorry to be slow to respond on this one, folks! The first pressing of the Artist’s Profile DVD sold out very quickly, but more are on the way. The Laser’s Edge label (the label that puts out our McGill/Manring/Stevens stuff) has graciously agreed to sell them on their site and they offer several methods of payment. You can find them at www.lasercd.com; go to the store section of the site and look under “Specialty Items, Videos & DVDs.” They may have a few copies left at the moment, but if not, they’ll have more soon. Thanks so much for all the interest in this!

my copy has finally arrived! :hyper:

an amazing DVD Michael; packed with great music and inspiration. its was very educational as well.

Michael, just out of curiosity, did you play your 10-string Zon through a overdriven amp? sounds like its been played through an intestellar overdrive or something. its got awesome growl.

i was blown away when i watched the book of living and dying being played. ever since i heard it on book of flames i always thought that it was being played with 2 basses.

while i was interested to hear what Michael had to say in between the songs, i found it a bit distracting when he started talking in the middle of the songs.

that's my 2 cents for now...

Well, I`ve just received the DVD yesterday.
I really enjoyed the perfomance.
It`s a real pleasure to see you playing Mike.
Thanks for your music.

Thanks, guys!

I didn't use any distortion on the ten string for "The Fire Sermon," dace. The growl just comes from so many strings all vibrating together against the fingerboard. It's a crazy sound, isn't it? And thanks for the feedback. Someone else commented recently that they would prefer to see the interview and performance segments separately. I'll have to keep working on getting a real concert DVD out there!

BTW, I should mention that I did get my Paypal together, so anyone who's interested in buying a copy that way should contact me at michael@manthing.com

A more than justified bump for this thread... I just received my copy of this DVD today. It's really worth watching and if you haven't got a copy yet, then stop reading this and immediately put an order in with Mr. Manring. Paypal payment is now set up, so watcha waiting for? ;) Gratuitous plug over...

BY THE WAY: THIS DVD PLAYS IN REGION 2 (EU) PLAYERS

My home DVD player is most definitely Region 2 and the DVD works fine, so I'm assuming it must be region free. Even better news for all us EU-based bassists.

It's a great feature Michael. I have always admired your music first without the geek side of me kicking in and needing to know how you make those sounds, but it's kinda cool to see that as well. :bassist: As ever an amazing array of bass-faces going on as well. :D

Anyway. Thanks again.
Mike

Thanks so much for the very kind words, Mike! It’s good to know that it’s playable on DVD players there. Who came up with this idea of regional coding anyway!

Sigh --- I guess I am the king of “bass face,” aren’t I?

To Michael, Steve, or anyone that is kind enough to lend some advice,

Is it possible to still purchase a copy of Michael's Artist Profile DVD? If so, how can I go about that if I am in the UK?

I haven't purchased it earlier because I was unsure whether it would play on my DVD player and TV, but now I don't care!
I just want to have a copy, even if I can't watch it!

Thanks everyone,
Brian

Pay Michael through Paypal remembering to give your address and specify what you want (i.e. the DVD!). Michael *does* ship to the UK and the DVD *ought* to work on your DVD player. It does on mine (see above)...

Thanks for your reply. What exactly is Paypal? Do I just mail him a cheque for 25 dollars specifying what I want and where I live? Thanks, I appreciate it!
By the way, do you know of any good music stores in London? I am looking to get some knew equipment but can't find a place in my home town that sells DL4's or cabinets or any good basses for that matter. I've heard this online place called the Gallery is good, but can't find it on the web, plus I would rather try the stuff out in person! Please help! :)

In order to use Paypal you need to set up an account:
Go to the Paypal website (www.paypal.com) and sign up for an account. You need to give credit card details and a valid e-mail address. Once you've signed up you can send money to anyone else who has signed up - this means you can use it for transactions in Ebay and many other sites (CDBaby etc.). To transfer money you just need to specify the recipients email address and Paypal handle the rest. Money gets debited and creditted to your account which can then be used as "virtual cash" within the Paypal system or transferred out to your bank account.

You could also send Michael a cheque although I suspect an international money transfer (or something like that) in dollars would be preferable. It would take longer to process though. Once you've set up Paypal it all happens instantaneously and it's fairly seamless for both parties - you pay in dollars (which gets converted to UK Pounds on your credit card bill) and Michael receives the amount straight away.

Sorry to bump this old thread, Michael, but I sent an email to you back in February to order a copy that I guess never made it to your inbox, and the website you mentioned doesn't appear to be carrying the DVD anymore. If you could shoot me an email to bryan_tyler@hotmail.com , I'd gladly order my copy.

Thanks!

Has anybody else had problems with their DVD?

Mine just packed up a couple of weeks back. The picture went all distorted and the DVD froze. Every time i tried to play it it just got worse and worse and now won't play at all. My DVD player won't even read it any more?

It's a bummer cos I love the DVD! I may have to buy another.
