Instructional video, I'm talking here.

I just got studiobassplayer.com's "soloing 2" video which claims to extensively cover soloing over changes. The selling point that got me was that it appeared (note: appeared!) to be put out by the University of Miami School of Music (says "university of miami school of music" right on the box). You can check the specs at www.studiobassplayer.com if ya want.

IT SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What it is: A guy who can only marginally play and CAN'T teach trying to show the viewer how to take 'licks' from bebop heads (Donna lee, Ornithology, Groovin High) and transpose them. No word about the harmony, transposing the licks to fit on other chords (that would require talking about pesky things like roots, 3rds, 5ths, 7ths, blah blah blah). He doesn't even correctly identify the key of each lick. Several times he transposes a lick over a ii - V and calls the new key by the root of the ii chord.

Add to this the fact that the bass neck in the close ups has no position markers. Great if you don't like to play a bass with dots, but you need them if you're showing somebody something - duh! Especially if the headstock is not visible.

The best (worst?) part about the video is the "money shot" tune, for lack of a better phrase. The tune he plays after it's over is "Anthropology", only he screws the pooooch on it! Misses notes everywhere, plays rhythms incorrectly, slows down to play the hard stuff, speeds up on the easy stuff....a total hack job. Any of the guys at the Atlanta bass get together could have put together a better package in a few days.

Please don't buy this video. I'm trying to get my money back for it, and if I don't I'm going to send it to Bass Player for them to put in the Barbecue Pit.

Nope, but he does say that he's a graduate of the Univ of Miami's School of Music (I just can't belive he did, at least not as a bass player), and Studied with Jaco, Bill Dickens and Wally Voss. My bullsh*t meter is pegged

Kind of reminds me af a bluse grass bass video i had picked up years back were the bass player played with one finger on each hand, plucking hand and neck hand.

Pac - Maybe you could track this guy down and roast him. I remember the threads where we jumped this guy. He runs around the web using the screen name "johnnybravo" to push this stuff. I looked at his website and remarked in a TB post he looked kind of hinky.

studiobassplayer.com spammed this other forum I look at sometimes, www.basslessons.com. They got a very negative reaction there too.

He hit Bass101.com, too. I think he got them first, if I recall correctly.

Probably the worst music instructional video was Michael Fath's Modern Classical Metal video (or something to that effect-it was 1989 when I bought it).

It featured 60 minutes of Michael Fath playing completely obvious metalized arpeggios, with 30 minutes dedicated to his whining about how he really invented neo-baroque metal guitar, not that Yin-Yang Malmsteen guy. Complete lack of any real content, but then again, that's what you get for trying to learn neo-classical metal.

More recently, I bought the Star Licks video "Bass As a Solo Instrument." The tape was obviously put together at the last minute--most of the bassists, from Nathan East to Larry Graham, were just explaining their approaches in sort of an off-the-cuff manner. Moreover, the host of the tape has this California-circa-1988 moussed blond haircut, and he seems to have no serious knowledge of the bass. However, hearing Larry Graham play solos with heavy feedback fuzz and the Mu-Tron is worth the $20.

Like Bootyquake, the worst instructional video I've ever seen wasn't a bass one - it was a terrible beginner's drum tape from the mid eighties that my band's drummer showed me a while back. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am it was an elaborate joke.

The video was filmed in, as far as I can see, someone's garage. It began with a drum kit being "set up" - each part appeared, with a suitably ridiculous "Boing!" noise. Eventually, we see how big this kit is - double bass drum, at least five snares, a few dozen toms, and row after row of cymbals - hardly something a beginner would have. (The whole point of the video seems to be to show off the guy's gear - he seems to be a drummer equivalent of John Turner! :D)

When the "instructor" turns up, he's a suitably be-poodled 80's heavy metaller (why do about 90% of all instructional videos seem to be made by people like this???) whose main tutoral technique seems to be saying "This... dun-dun-dun ...is the bass or kick drum. dun-dun-dun. Let's see how we use this in a beat..." and then playing the most elaborate and self-indulgent drum solo you've ever seen.

The crowning glory of the tape is when he actually stops showing off for a moment and talks seriously about paradiddles. Halfway through a sentence, he vanishes off the screen! (Another boing! noise) About 30 seconds later, he walks back behind the drum kit with a drink, and says "Phew! It's getting pretty hot in here - just had to go and get a drink!"

At the end of the tape, we're showed how to use what we've learned (?) in a band context. Cue a good half an hour of the presenter of the tape playing in an awful hair band - basically, the only point of the tape as far as I can assertain is a feeble excuse to promote the band this fella's in!

It could only be a drummer... ;)

The absolute worst Bass Instructional Video I have seen is Andy West, I love the Dregs and the way he plays....but his video is ASS. A not-even-close second is a Chuck Rainey video, he keeps doin' this same lick over and over and over in it...and it isn't even remotely close to the playing that made him famous. I have about 28 bass videos so far, so I have a pretty good collection of bass videos. I haven't seen the www.studiobassplayer.com videos, and now I'm glad I decided not to get them.

It seems most videos arent that great. I mean there are a few like the rocco one but most just seem to show licks.
Anthony Vitti from berklee is releasing some videos very soon. I think one is already out. He is an incredible player and teacher so Im sure his videos will reflect that. I have talked with him and it sounds like they will have lots of content.

studiobassplayer.com is so lame... i don´t know if you saw a thread started by studiopro :rolleyes: who misteriously has only two posts and advertised the videos saying they were great... just for that that company should broke and burn in hell :D

the thread got bashed and finally removed... some of the responses were pretty funny, too bad we can´t see it...

i just got the video from jon, and we watched it a while. the guy on the video is a poor player - he screws up multiple times throughout and he calls out chords that are not what he plays. he obviously didn't rehearse the tripe that he was saying, he's showing examples on a bass with no fretdots, so you can't even tell where he is.

but the most criminal aspect of this whole video is the point behind it - he's trying, from what i can tell, to teach advanced soloing by basically ripping off be-bop heads.

now don't get me wrong, i know that everybody quotes in their solos - this is a good thing, it gives the audience a frame of reference, sometimes helps to inject humor or pathos into the piece, and can challenge the player to keep his repertoire large to draw on.

but, to imply that the best way to solo is just transpose heads verbatim is wrong. i personally think that teachers _shouldn't_ teach quoting, i think that as a player progresses he/she should figure that out on his/her own, and apply it the way he/she feels is appropriate. that's the whole point of improv.

this video is worse than worthless.

Good Idea! I nominate JT. If he'd do a rainbow dye-job on the mohawk, tatoo his face and spit a lot, I doubt he'd even need the wig. After all, attitude sells.

The Conklin doubleneck is also an absolute must. He should play examples on the fretless neck, and play up in the high register where all of the colorful figuration takes over the fingerboard. It would also help if he could tatoo J-A-C-O across the four fingers of his left hand, and R-U-L-E-Z written upside down along the fingers and thumb of his right, so that the mystery phrase can only be easily read when he's playing...the camera close ups would be big time.

I don't know about everybody else, but I'd pay to own a copy of such a video.

a triad is the 1, 3 and 5 of a scale. the 1 being the tonic (the note from which the scale derives, ie. the tonic or root note), the 3 being the third note in the scale, and the 5 being the fifth note in the scale. kinda hard to grasp, but it's not like music is logical or anything :p
okay, let's take the C Major scale. a C Major triad would consist of - C, E, and G. now just play those notes together, and voila ! you've played a C Major triad ! think about it ! :D just count alphabetically to find the 1, 3 and 5. ergo:
1 = C (root note)
2 = D
3 = E (the third ! woohoo !)
4 = F
5 = G (and the fifth ! yay !)
6 = A
7 = B
(1) = C (the octave)

*these are the notes in the C Major scale. because there are no sharps or flats, every note in it will be natural. hope i helped some ?

Thanks!! But what i meant was that i havn't gone over them in lessons. i was worried because i though it was on bass thorey in general. I didn't relise that it was on soloing. thanks anyway TUBES!

I just re-read the whole thread to see if anyone else mentioned this, and it does not seem so. It seems that the audio lags after the video. This being the case, and added to no fret markers... there is absolutely no way to know where he is playing.

Did anyone else notice the lag??

If not, then I wonder if on top of the poor playing, poor teaching, poor editing ... and more ... This video itself may be falling apart.

As a beginning player I was actually curious if I would still be able to pick up some tips from this flic... even if basic ones. The only thing I got out of it was the desire to clean my vcr with alcohol and send this pos to the next poor sob on the list.

the thing that upsets me the most about this thing is that the guy obviously didn't put _ANY_ effort into this. he could have made a video about soloing, maybe geared towards beginners, and had some real instruction involved with it, if he just put the effort into it. instead, he was just interested in ripping people off.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find those 'Mullet Academy' videos really educational. What I like to do is get my band mates in a room, stick on a video by Joe Mozarelli, or whatever the guy's probably called, let him start widdling and then turn to our guitarists and say 'any of you do that live and you're f**king fired!'

Likewise, stick on some drum video by some gifted artiste who is quite blatantly capable of the most amazing physical feats on a drum kit (I mean you could turn some of what these people do into an Olympic event) but who whiles away his time in some big hair band like Winger, because it pays the bills and gets him on MTV. Wait until he showing you some really neat trick that doubtless involves hitting 2 of his 8 chinas really fast and in tandem with his kicks whilst spinning his sticks and then turn round to your drummer and say, 'hey that looks really cool, you should do that'.

Next up, it's my turn. I'll pick a really cool video called 'advanced soloing for rock bass'. I'll know it's good because the guy on the cover is wearing spandex, has big hair and his bass will have a custom flame paint job. The video will be filmed in 'mushymonobadlymasteredsound' that has an interesting effect of making his bass sound compressed to the hilt and cleverly filtering out any other sounds, so you won't know if he's playing out of key and just going off on one.

Instructional videos are the greatest!

I work in a Japanese company. It's getting close to Thanksgiving in the US. People in my place of employment like to call me GabuGabu in November because it sounds like a Turkey to them. :) I always thought that was cool. :D

I have the video. Things have been majorly hectic for the last few weeks and I haven't sent it, but I will as soon as Chris PM's me with his address.

OK, now for the review.

The guy has at least a little technical ability, and has learned the heads to at least 3 standards, but that is the only good thing that I can say about the video. As John Turner would say, it blows chunks!

No markings on the fingerboard, saying 'This is in D7' and then playing an F minor scale, and only telling the name of about 1/4 of the notes that he is playing equals absolutely no instructional value whatsoever. Someone with a good grasp of theory might get a little something out of it(like ripping off heads to standards) if they did a lot of rewinding and replaying of the slowed down snippets, but someone who is a beginner or has no knowledge of theory would not get a thing from it, except for feeling that they had been ripped off.

I stricktly investagated(;)) the video by watching it 4 times:eek: and came to the conclusion that this isn't intended as a bass instructional video at all.

It is a general instruction video, and the instruction that it gives is how NOT to make an instructional video.

Again, sorry for the delay, guys, there is no excuse.

Oh yeah, there was no sign up sheet in the package. And Chris, as soon as you PM me your address, I will mail the video to you.

ok, I think I've recovered enough to tell you how much it stunk. I can't believe that people put crap like that out. A couple of times in the video he actually says "Cut" and they don't. Yeah.. I went to the site to try and get an e-mail address for this guy so I could tell him how bad he sucks. I did a Google search for his name, and the guy has made a disturbing number of 'instructional' videos.. like, 6 or something.

I mean, it's bad enough the guy starts off with a bad rendition of Donna Lee.

It only gets worse when he decides to use a dot-less bass to show closeups of his playing position.

It can't possibly be real when his "teaching technique" is to simply say, "here is the pattern for the lick--play it over every chord change. Of course, you'll have to choose better notes when the chord is different." Huh?

The real kicker, of course, was when the audio and video lose their sync. Oh, okay, that makes it easier to follow what he is spelling out.

There is no list. When I was trying to figure out where I was in the pecking order, I went through every post to see the order that people asked about it. Now that I'm done with the video, I know it goes to Gard, and that's about it.

So, a little research can let you know. Best bet is to find out who gets it before you, and who gets it after you, and to PM them. If everyone does that, you'll know when you get it.

i've seen some pretty poorly produced videos in my time, and a lot that are just playing on the celebrity of the player who clearly has very little to say about what they are doing, but this thing sounds like a world beating gem of a video-train-wreck.

Someone please tell me that the guy guy has got a wet-look mullet... then, I could die happy... :o)

Maybe I'll just have to make a video that is just as bad, so that we've got something on this side of the Atlantic to watch instead... :o)

It is sitting on my coffee table as of this moment, but hasn't made it into the VCR yet. No promises of when that will happen, kind of busy this week between the day gig, rehearsals, and gigs, but hopefully I'll find a half hour to put myself through the torture test.:eek:

Yeah, i admit it--I only watched about 30-35 minutes of it. But, in my defense, I had to stop--otherwise, I would have completely torn the flesh from my arm with my fingernails....

I just discovered this afternoon that the Media Center of the University where I work has the ability to convert tape from PAL to NTSC format and vice versa. So, if I get the tape sometime in the next 4 months before I leave this job, I can get a converted copy made and then sent to our overseas folks so they can get in on this action.

How could this person who I shall not name here let this be released with his name on it. I would be embarassed to have my name associated with it. The University of Miami must not know about this thing, because their name is on the front of it...if they did, I would imagine a lawsuit would follow rapidly to make the fact clear that it wasn't made with any input from the school itself. This is truly awful video, simply put.

Hey ladies and gents, small problem....

I took the video to the media center on Friday to get it converted to PAL, and they balched because of the copyright on the back. They would only do it if I got permission from the company. Ok, no problem. I came back and got on the web, and the studiobassplayer.com web site is no more. Gone. Kaput. Fine'. And searching for the guy who recorded this masterpiece (Eric Petrei) does not turn up a web site or email address. Ditto for the University of Miami website. No mention of this guy.

SO..... It appears that this company is no more. I am going to go back to the media center and talk to the guys about not needing permission since the company is no more, and see if that works. Otherwise, I will think of something else.

Oh, and I have my Pepto-Bismol ready for when I watch it this evening.;)

how about, make a copy of it on a blank video tape, edit out the copyright mention, if there is one,
and then take it down there and let the dupe it. they won't watch it too, will the?

Talked to the guys in Media Services again. Explained the situation of the company no longer in business, etc. The guy told me to email the Univ. of Miami School of Music to see if they have any real connection to this video, and if they have the copyright. If they claim no knowledge, I should be OK.

U of M never even replied to my email inquiry about this video. They have NO involvement whatsoever, all you have to do is watch that POS to tell that..

oh, and JT's idea should work great!

OK, so if the PAL version ever gets made maybe we should have an "official" cue list. I suggest this list, taken from which Europeans have expressed interest in it, in this thread, during the last month:

I'd be willing to bet that one of the reasons that Mr. Petrei is no longer selling this travesty is precisely because UM got wind of it and shut him down for having their name prominently displayed on the cover.

In theory I'd love to see it - I'm not prepared to waste too much good money on it though - there's too much fine playing out there that I can invest in to waste more than a couple of quid on this bunch of crap... however, it would be good to see... :o) If a Euro version makes it across the pond, lemme know and we'll see.

Why doesn't someone with some serious webspace just encode it and we can all stream it via real video or something? surely the production values aren't good enough to warrant a proper view over a streaming version??? :o)

Wow. That hurt. I just finished watching the thing, and just.......wow. It reminded me of a video assignment for an Improv 1 class in college. Just truly horrible. I think the best(worst) part was the middle 10 minutes and the last 2 minutes where the audio track gets ahead of the vidoe track. Very amusing. Woke me back up.:p
