brunobass 02-14-2005, 01:31 AM does anyone know what the current value of these eub's are.
i think only 200 or so were made and i'm considering selling mine.
this is the eub sting played with the police- i've seen his in person and mine is the exact same instrument.
thnx
heyspacecowboy 03-11-2005, 01:15 AM hi
do you still sell the van zalinge z bass ?
gerald.fischer@aua.com
furiously funky 03-18-2005, 11:21 PM I tried an electric upright today in a music store. It was basically a DB with no real body. I find a lot of electric double basses dont have the feel of a double bass but this did. It was also a reasonable price.
has anyone heard of Z basses? ( i did a search but the letter Z doesnt work because it is only one letter)
thanks for the help

bassteban 03-18-2005, 11:38 PM I think it's made by a guy named Zalinge or Van Zalinge, from The Netherlands. You can probably find something on Bob Gollihur's site. There weren't many of these made, I believe, & I'm sure they were quite expensive at the time(80s).
Jeremy Allen 03-19-2005, 12:36 AM There was one for sale on ebay yesterday--search under "electric upright bass." The price was pretty reasonable, and the pictures were good--quite an abnormal-looking EUB!
mikjans 03-19-2005, 08:40 AM These basses were known as Van Zalinge in Europe and Z basses in the US. 265 were made ca 1979-1982, by Dutch bassist Henk Van Zalinge. They are hollowbody and have a Polytone pickup (at least some). Best known user is Sting, but even the mighty NHOP endorsed it, although I doubt he ever used it onstage.
Mikael
Speaking of NHOP, is it true that he has recorded with EUB? I heard/read that somewhere......Years ago there was a solo bass piece on a live Oscar Peterson album I was listening to. The piece was called "Future Child" and was very EUBish. Also, I have a Phillip Catherine/NHOP album that used digital effects on the DB, again, very EUBish. Monster muscian NHOP is!
Francois Blais 03-19-2005, 04:03 PM Don't know if NHOP recorded with an EUB, but he's known to use a magnetic pickup, which makes him sound quite fretless-like.
I have a DVD here, where he plays with the Kenny Drew Trio (At the Brewhouse), and he uses that.
Seems the poles are incorporated into the FB. (or is it a Biesele, which has a similar look?)
It isn't a Pierre Joseph string charger though!
dwjazz54 03-19-2005, 04:54 PM Hate to sound like a fool here, but who is NHOP?
Marcus Johnson 03-20-2005, 01:16 AM Nekoosa House Of Pancakes?....
Nah, it's Neils Henning Orsted Pedersen. Bit of a bassist.
mikjans 03-20-2005, 04:34 AM NHOP has an old Danish Elkit magnetic pickup with the poles installed in the fingerboard. The brand is discontinued, but the concept lives in the StringAmp violin pickup http://www.musiklab.dk/stringamp/index.html
Mikael
furiously funky 03-20-2005, 01:04 PM what would you expect to pay for a used one? The one i tried was 1400 CDN or about 1200 US. Would this be standard used price for these? the Sting one that was/is on ebay was about 1000 when i looked at it, so this price seems reasonable.
thanks for the help
Why were so few of them made also?
-marty
mikjans 03-20-2005, 03:06 PM IMO, these basses are quite good. I usually avoid giving appraisals, but USD 1,000-1,200 sounds quite reasonable.
The fact that 265 were made makes the Z Bass one of the bigger sellers. EUBs are very much still a matter for players on a local market level. The EUBs that have appeared in four figure numbers are very few: the original Ampeg Baby Bass, the Framus Triumph, the total of NS Design basses (methinks), the Clevingers too. I don´t think the Azolas have hit the thousands yet. There are probably fewer Merchant Vertical Basses or Knutson Messengers around than there are Z Basses. (Most of the latter can be found in Europe, though.)
Mikael
furiously funky 03-20-2005, 04:05 PM why did he stop building in 82?
mikjans 03-21-2005, 01:47 AM I suspect that the Z Bass venture wasn´t profitable enough. Henk Van Zalinge retired and moved to the South of France. I don´t know if he´s still with us, anyway he must be at least in his 70s.
heyspacecowboy 04-09-2005, 04:35 PM hi - i just want to let you know that the z bass which was on auction in ebay did not just have a reasonable price of usd 1000,--. this was
the starting bid which does not mean that it was sold for that price.
the z bass is a very rare and desireable instrument which - in case your are lucky enough to find one to buy - has its price. the z bass is a real collectors musical instrument.

ylano 06-18-2005, 08:20 AM i am in the same state (thought living in france). I've a van zalige too
a black one and i'm wondering what could be its value ?
I do'nt use it anymore and i'm thinking about selling it.
I bought mine ten years before for about 1500 $
heyspacecowboy 07-25-2005, 02:20 PM hi
do you have photos of your bass. i never saw it in black.

Henk van Zalinge is still around but almost in it's 80s. He produces acoustic double basses during his retirement (which he always did since the 1970's, btw)
BUCA sold, and produced, the basses worldwide. There are around 250 made, but 50 made by the master himself and 200 factory made.
The hand-made are the goodies, they were all tailor made for such players as NHOP or Stan Clarke or George Mraz. Sting, actually, has two basses, which he still uses to the present day.
Whoopy 10-24-2005, 04:06 AM Hey,
I recently bought one for $ 3500,=.
I live in Europe.
As far as I know there were about 800 made. Whatever is true there's only a limited number made by Van Zalinge.
Sting played one.
With kind regards, Whoopy.

mikjans 03-06-2006, 02:08 AM According to the maker himself, Henk Van Zalinge, 264 basses were made.

mikjans 04-28-2006, 06:22 AM For those of you who have the hots for a Z Bass and can´t find one, maybe this is an alternative:
http://www.marktplaats.nl/index.php?url=http%3A//koopjes.marktplaats.nl/muziek_en_instrumenten/strijkinstrumenten_overige/31200947.html%3F
Jak van Waarde builds this "Van W Bass". Description is in Dutch, but maybe a Babelfish translation can give the big picture, at least. van Waarde claims to have taken the Z Bass a step further...
NB: I have not tried it and I´m in no way affiliated with the maker.

johnvs 08-26-2006, 10:01 AM Henk van Zalinge is still around but almost in it's 80s.
Henk van Zalinge passed away feb 5 this year. Age 83.

bluesdogblues 11-13-2007, 03:40 PM Hi I'm new here..
I'd like to know about Van Zalinge Z Bass, that I know many of you already know of.
1. Is it hollow body or solid body?
2. What (kind of) pick up it has?
3. Does anybody has any Clear Pictures of the bass from any angle?
I'd like to have a luthier to make a copy of the bass.
Thanks before and God Bless You All!
minuskel 01-28-2008, 06:44 AM I have detailed pictures. I owned a van Zalinge in very good shape. Sold the bass to a German upright player last year.
It's a hollow body (two soundchambers) Van Zalinge used Polytone pickups and later on he developed his own.
Van zalinge has a patent where you can obtain the exact description and principles of his EUB:
Title:Stringed musical instrument Document Type and Number:United States Patent 4242938 Link to this page:http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4242938.html Abstract:A stringed musical instrument, in particular a double bass, having a resonating body of narrow elongate shape, a neck secured to this body and strings extending across the body and neck and across a bridge supported on the front plate of the body. A transverse sound-beam inside the body divides the latter into two separate resonating chambers of unequal size which are acoustically connected by a through-hole in the sound-beam. Below the bridge a bore extends through the body front plate and into the sound-beam to open into the connecting hole of the beam and an electrical pick-up element extends through this bore between the lower side of the bridge and a vibration plate mounted in the connecting hole.
If you sign in on patentsonline you can get a PDF of the original design and specs.
If you want some pics I'll send you some. Just give your e-mail.
Good luck

Francois Blais 07-27-2008, 10:02 AM Hi, and welcome on TB.

JohnT1 07-28-2008, 03:53 AM Hi Francois
Sorry about delay in response..have been away from computer all day...
Thanks for the links..still a "newbie" navigating the site..will hopefully get better as time goes on...
The question is probably moot now anyway,as I have just purchased an EUB that was described as a Z Bass, but, after looking at the picture of Sting and his machine..I would guess that it is not.
2 things..I don't mind that it's not..I'm still very keen to receive this new family member and see how it sounds, and find out what needs to be done,
and,also..from what I understand..Z Basses (Van Zalinge) were manufactured in small numbers (250??) in the 1950s and 1960s??
The instrument that Sting is playing looks far too modern to be of that era.
The Bass that I have just purchased seems much more in keeping with that era, designwise, et al.
I will post photos of this instrument when I receive it.Perhaps one of the members with more experience than I will be able to help with a maker or take a guess at it's origins
Once again
Many Thanks
JohnT1
Francois Blais 07-28-2008, 10:51 AM Mikael Jansson will probably jump in soon and provide the best help!
Congrats, by the way!

Best,

HuubD 09-26-2008, 03:03 AM I'm about to buy a Van Zalinge EUB, and in forum i read that the first 50 are originally handcrafted by van Zalinge himself. The curent owner says it's an original: how could i check this? Does anybody know?
HuubD 09-30-2008, 08:04 AM Hi Mikael,
Apparently tou seem to know quite a lot about the van Zalinge EUB. I hope you're still connected to TB. Do you know how I could recognise wether my bass is an originally handmade one by van Zalinge himself? I'd love to hear it.
The bass sounds great, by the way, but the piezo pu under the bridge makes a lot of noise!
