My family just purchases a Fender Jazz bass for me and before I take lessons I want to see if I can learn on my own. I have one question using the finger style do you stroke the strings in front of the first pickup or between the first and second pickup? Also I have three knobs on the bass I am questing that two are for volume and one is for tone the Fender book doesn’t tell me. :bassist:
Generally-
A Fender Jazz has...
One knob = NECK pickup volume
One knob = BRIDGE pickup volume
One knob = "TONE"(Fender "Tone" pot adds some treble/brightness).
You can pluck the strings ANYWHERE! That's one of the perks of playing! ;)
You should(or you will) notice-
The strings feel & vibrate differently when played up by the neck vs. when played back by the bridge vs. when played directly between the 2 pickups...the result is a different 'tone'. How much or how little 'force' you exert will also factor in.
Good luck!

JPJ used to play right on the figerboard for some tunes. You'll notice on your Jazz that the higher up you go, the warmer the sound gets. Nice and thumpy. Good luck!
