Music is written on a staff which is made up of 5 lines and 4 spaces which are between the lines. Every line and space is a note. Some notes have to go above the staff, and some have to go below.
B
--A----
G
--F----
E
--D----
C
--B----
A
--G----
F
E
---------------------------------------------0(G)-2(A) 4(B)
------------------------------0(D)-2(E)-3(F)
---------------0(A)-2(B)-3(C)----
0(E)-1(F)-3(G)----------
The 5 lines on the staff are GBDFA or (Good Bassists Do Fine Always)
The 4 spaces on the staff are ACEG or (All Cows Eat Grass)
The G on the first line of the staff is the 3rd fret on your E string.
A is your open A string, B is the 2nd fret on the A string. C is the third fret on the A string.
D is your open D string, E is the 2nd fret on the D string, F is the 3rd fret on your D string.
G is your open G string, A is the 2nd fret on the G string, and B is the 4th gret on the G string
My advice, get a book. Most of them will teach you the basics better than I can.
