Ok I'm playing a peice that has quarter notes "1 beat" notes.

its E string Open E f g a ( when they mean A its the Pressed down A and not the open A correct?

they are both the same note so you can play whichever seems more comfortable.

it can be played either way. If it is easier for you to play it fretting the "A" then play it like that. However, this is not any more correct than playing the open "A" even in the example you are giving.
