VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Belt buckle rash prevention?
Ok, my new bass and my belt buckle just can't seem to get along (unfortunetly for my bass) :(. I've been looking for solutions to my problem and I'm thinking this (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Pickguards/Pickguard_materials/Clear_Pickguard_Materials.html)is what I need. If I can put this where my belt buckle seems to want to scratch my bass will this help my problem?
Linas 02-21-2006, 11:41 PM http://www.scratchpadusa.com/index.html check them out. I dont know if these are any good, but i saw them in a magazine once.
seanm 02-21-2006, 11:53 PM I wear my belt with the buckle off to the left side to prevent belt rash. Looks a bit weird, but I am not going to win any fashion contests anyway ;)

That's the way to go!
Greenman 02-22-2006, 01:24 AM Duct Tape says Red Green:hiding:
Put it on when you want and take it off when you don"t.
popinfresh 02-22-2006, 02:25 AM Err, just move the buckle to the side when playing ;)
Or, where a shirt out over it.
Frank Martin 02-22-2006, 02:40 AM 1.) Pull out your shirt over your belt.
2.) Play your bass higher :p
3.) Put something on the back of your bass than can be removed without marks
4.) Take the stupid belt off and wear Hosenträgers :smug:
5.) Wear some "Kiss the cook"-style thingies :D

Thats exactly what my uncle Benny does... he doesn't play bass much anymore, but he still wears his belt that way. :smug:
tribal3140 02-22-2006, 08:22 AM 4.) Take the stupid belt off and wear Hosenträgers :smug:
HAHAHAHA
I pull mine to the left but my bass is still LOADED with em.
that pad thing is rediculous that straps to the bass.
you just need to put a wristband around your buckle while you play then strategicly remove it.
Or get a cool one with that picture of brian B in jail on it!:D
Dan1099 02-22-2006, 08:25 AM I've never had a problem with this. Maybe it's because all my t-shirts cover it, but I'd guess it's because my fat gut pushes my bass off of it. :smug:
Or get a cool one with that picture of brian B in jail on it!:D
FREEEEEEEDDDOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!
GrooveWarrior 02-22-2006, 08:33 AM This thing attaches to your belt and covers the buckle.

Or you could just get fatter. It worked for me! Not a scratch on any of my instruments.
I'm 5'7" and 220 lbs, I don't want to get much fatter :D

I'm 6'5", 330lbs. I CAN'T get much fatter!! I was 220lbs at 15!:D
PaleMelanesian 02-22-2006, 10:08 AM I wear my belt the other direction - the tail goes to the right. It puts the pointy part of the buckle on the left, away from the bass. Works great. I had to re-break-in my belts to curve the other way, but now it's great.
pedalnote 05-12-2008, 11:38 PM Thought I might as well write here, seeing as the thread is almost dead. Arghh!!! Purchased a new American Jazz Bass with a real nice sunburst finish last year, and the first night I gigged with it I didn't notice that the buckle on my nifty stud belt --over which I had put two pieces of black duct tape, thank you -- had a little sharp spot that poked through the tape during the exuberant second set and scratched the snot out of the back of my brand new bass. The experts say what: refinish, our just hang onto it for the next 20 years until the rash can be marketed as making it an "experienced" bass?
Thanks for any opinions.
EagleMoon 05-12-2008, 11:40 PM Use a rope like the guys in Braveheart! :D
seanm 05-12-2008, 11:48 PM Or you could use the Flea method and play naked. Check local laws first ;)
suspenders. ;)
Seriously though, I'd cover whatever's doing the damage. If you just put on a scratch guard, you know you're going to swing the bass around and find a way to chew it up anyways.
Maybe a d-ring belt? No buckle.

Jarno 05-13-2008, 08:57 AM You could also try to find a "mechanics belt", these don't have buckles.
I came across these one day, but I haven't been able to find them in the Netherlands. If someone has an idea about where to find them, please let me know.
Best regards,
Jarno.
deekay911 05-13-2008, 09:07 AM I use one of these on my Ric and it works great:

+1. Started doing it after I bought my Lakland 55-94 years ago.
That's the way to go!
Me too! Me too!

mimaz 05-13-2008, 09:34 AM I've purchased here (http://stores.ebay.com/Removable-Clear-Guitar-Pickguard_W0QQssPageNameZstrkQ3amefsQ3amesstQQtZkm ) with great success for a couple of my basses.
four2oh 05-13-2008, 10:54 AM Rainbow suspenders ala Mork 'n Mindy
PaleMelanesian 05-13-2008, 10:59 AM Thread your belt through the other way. Left-to-right instead of right-to-left. That way, the pointy part is aiming away from your bass, assuming your bass is off to your right side a bit. And you don't have to look goofy!
i_got_a_mohawk 05-13-2008, 11:00 AM I put my belt on backwards so the buckle is at my back.
giglawyer 05-13-2008, 11:02 AM Or you could use the Flea method and play naked. Check local laws first ;)
LOL. No buckle rash for Flea.
Drifta 05-13-2008, 11:06 AM tighten the strap!!
TrevorOfDoom 05-13-2008, 11:06 AM i just let the buckle be. my three basses are my babies, and they're not going anywhere anytime soon, so i'm not worried.
for the record, i'm seriously looking into getting a Roscoe Century Standard. if i do, i'll still let the buckle be. it's my bass, and that buckle is as much a part of me as the bass.
here it is:

matrok 05-13-2008, 11:28 AM I wear my belt with the buckle off to the left side to prevent belt rash. Looks a bit weird, but I am not going to win any fashion contests anyway ;)
been doing that for years now, best solution to me.
Pilgrim 05-13-2008, 11:34 AM I move my buckle to the left, and haven't had a problem. However, similar to one of the ideas above - you can cut a piece of regular or suede leather perhaps 4" wide by 8 to 10" long, tuck one end inside your trousers and leave the other end hanging over your belt to shield the buckle. When you go on break, remove it to retain your normal suave, sophisticated look.
astrah 05-13-2008, 12:58 PM Tony Lama used to make leather belt buckles. You see them come up periodically on ebay. I have used them for years, and don't have a single scratch on the backs of any of my basses.
