Hey bdgotoh, what's the color of that Climax/L-1500 over on the left? That's really an amazing collection. I'm starting with an L-1500 (ordered Friday), and if I like it as much as I expect, I'll just keep going!

bdgotoh
03-05-2006, 11:25 AM
The Climax and the SB-2 are the same color - Emerald Blue metallic. I should have a new L-2000 in that color sometime soon.

I don't know what's wrong with having 10, at least they are all different!

addylewis

Nothing wrong with it at all man, its just jealousy creeping in...as I've said before "You can never have too much of a good thing - bass IS a good thing!"

Have you got a more recent photo for us man...?

bdgotoh

No pics lately, I'll try to clean up my room and get a pic in the next few days. Take out the SB-2, add a different SB-2 and a JB-2 and a couple of Lynxes and you get the idea!

Here's my old SB-1. Since this pic was taken I've ordered a G&L MFD J bridge pickup and installed TI flats. I played the bass at the last gig with a blues band and it was perfect. Hung out on the P all night other than when we played "Strut" (Taj Mahal and Jimmy Smith) where I cop the B-3 bass thing other than 24 bars at the end of a gtr solo where I flipped to the bridge for a little Jaco walk. I hardly played my StingRay. I love it dearly, but the SB with the flats really suits that vibe. I can't wait to hear it through the B-15 in the studio.

I got it from a fellow Pitter/TB'er a while back. I've hardly played it much, and had it up for sale a couple of times without any bites. Guess I'm hanging onto it as a spare now. I like it just fine, except I'm just a 4-banger nowadays.

My two:
1981 L2000E, born fretless with a skinny lil "J" type neck, currently wearing a 1987 big fat fretted "P" type neck. Why? Showed up on ebay one day, so why not:)

And the 2000 Tribute L2500. The burst on this is not as "fade-y" as the 1981, but not really as abrupt as it photographs.
Spydeyjg: the "humbucker position" on the '81 is definately fatter than the 2500's...

no, the back is just black...but when sunlight hits it at a certain angle, it looks purple...wierd.
I actually ordered it w/o the burst. The burst showed up, and I grabbed it! Makes the binding stand out more.

I really dig the 4+1 headstock. It upset me that they went 3+2 like the music man. I have a Stingray 4 also, natural finish...but this is the G&L forum...:

It's due to the body binding. They don't round the edges on basses with body binding. Personally, I really like the look, which is why the custom L2500 I have on order has the natural binding.

No those are just old ones. G&L has changed the bridges a few times. The earliest were chrome, then smooth black, (the 2KE) then black crinkle (the 'other natural which is '93) now chrome again.

Hey eastcoasteddie, if yours is flat on top (looks like it in the pic) it's an "L-2500 Custom".

I believe '97 is right around the time G&L made the Custom models. A L-2000, 2500, and maybe a 1500 too, all with flat tops, no arm contour.

Pitter "celtobass" has the actual L-2000 Custom that was shown in the brochure from '97.

Did you scoop that one up on the evil bay this past week? Bass in yer face!

Yep, that was me. I logged on at the right time. I hit the BIN about 2 seconds after I saw it. I'd been looking for one like this for about 6 months and had just about resigned myself to ordering one from the factory. Then this beauty popped up for around half what it looks like it would cost to order one. And I got it in three days instead of three months. Man, sometimes you just get lucky.

And thanks to all for the congrats!! I sure am stoked.

I just scooped this one up over the weekend and I am loving it! (Goodbye P-bass!) Based on the bridge serial # and headstock, I believe it to be a 1981 model. The body sculpt looks unlike any other L2000 I've seen, though - slightly narrower horns and less of a Fendery look. Anyone else encountered that? I wondered if it might not be original, but the hardware and pickup fit is perfect.

A few other details: the neck pickup is closer to the neck, more like on a MM Sabre than the regular L2000. The back contour is pretty shallow, not nearly as deep as normal. The neck plate has a hole for the micro-tilt adjustment but there's only more yellow paint showing through it. Was it not a standard feature? And there's that color... I haven't seen it on any other G&L bass from that era, though I suppose it could be a custom job.

Any thoughts? Seen anything similar? Recognize that body style? Just what have I gotten myself into? Aside from a delightful new bass and tons of tone, that is.

I don't have a PhD in G&Logy, but that body doesn't look right to me either. It looks really out of balance. The lack of microtilt seems to be the biggest give away that it's not just a modified G&L body, but a wholly different body.

How does it play and sound?

Cheers,
Chris

Unbolt the neck from the body, and see for your self. If the neck/body isn't GL then it wount have the GL logo stamped there along with the manufacture date. The logo and date sould exist on both the body and the neck.

My 4pdt mini-toggle switch finally came in and I did the single inner coils/parallel/single outer coils mod. I never really used series - too muffled. The differences between each setting are fairly subtle, but each is useful and now I have three two-pup coil settings I like to use, in addition to soloing.

Just thought I would share.

This is my Tribute.
I want to go American but why? This one so great. The only difference I have found is that the neck on the American is more "warn" in.

I honestly have no reason to buy another 4 string. That is bad because I wasn't expecting this bass to be so good. When I bought it. I wanted to keep it for a few months then sell and buy something better.

That is not a guitar..........its just dust on my camera lens:D

Opened up my L2500 Tribute case to practice this morning and found this-ick! The bridge has both string thru body and string thur bridge as an option. As a string thur bridge it only has two screws holding it on. Both my '81 string thru bridge only G&L's have 5 more screws holding the bridge on-there's only holes for strings on this one. Obviously it was not up to the task. What do I do now, call G&L and pray they stand behind it?
You can see the wood on the screw threads where they pulled out of the body...dang!

Now I'm going muts trying to decide between the two! Help me loendmaestro and hornytoad! I'm going to be playing in a new side project rockabilly band in a couple of months and now I can't make up my mind. I can't play either of them first since I play left handed. Most of y'all knew this already from the thread just about this, but, G&L did fix this at no charge, including shipping and new strings. Kick ass!

alan

Opened up my L2500 Tribute case to practice this morning and found this-ick! The bridge has both string thru body and string thur bridge as an option. As a string thur bridge it only has two screws holding it on. Both my '81 string thru bridge only G&L's have 5 more screws holding the bridge on-there's only holes for strings on this one. Obviously it was not up to the task. What do I do now, call G&L and pray they stand behind it?
You can see the wood on the screw threads where they pulled out of the body...dang!

if you have the time and inclination, could you post a pic of a

compared. (i think the 2000 should be in the middle).

almost perfect, except that l-2000 is facing the wrong direction. :D

thats ok...im going to start my own collection, beginning with this one

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/pfbbbt/my%20gear/IMG_0745.jpg

http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g64/pfbbbt/my%20gear/IMG_0744.jpg

acquired yesterday from starving musician in santa clara in nearly new condition for about 4 bills.

what was funny was on the day i found this i played a $2400 sadowsky jazz 4, a $2100 mike lull jazz 4, a $1100 fender coronado jazz
bass at gelb thru an epifani cab. then i played a $800 (used) H4 stingray, a $700 (used) u.s. l-1505, and this $400 trib thru a ampeg
ba115 at starving musician...and this bass just had the best tone an feel for me.

(the 1st runner up was the lull, btw)

i was starting to shy away from g&l again after playing a l-1500, and asat bass thru an ashdown system at rocker, as the tone wasnt
grabbing me. after playing this one, i just had to have it. it came with the g&l gigbag which is actually pretty nice.

im happy. i think this will be replacing the other two in the picture. they had another used l-2000 trib there (in sunburst i think) for the
same price. if it would have had a rosewood or fretless fingerboard, i woud have probably gotten it too!

Gutted the SB-2 last night to shield and replace the funky pots that were in it. They were split shafts so the knobs were wonky.

Still hums too much if the bridge is full on but I live in sinlge coil hell. Slight hum with the neck only and dialing about half the bridge eliminates it.

Favorite sound is neck then dialing just enough bridge to where the hum goes away and the bridge hum begins to be perceptible.

8 lbs 14 ounces so some ultra lites will drop it to 8lbs 10oz. :lowell: Me likey lots.

I didn't know, that G&L has a binding as an option. So when I saw this, I was sold immediately. This is my first G&L, but I was thinking about getting one for years. I mainly play 2 Fender Precision Basses and a used Alembic Essence in my band.

But whereas the Precisions have a little too much bottom for recordings, the Alembic sounds great, but the latter is a little uncomfortable to play for me. I hope this one solves my little "problems".

For me the Fender designs belong definitively to the most ergonomic. I played a Tribute L-2000 and was very impressed by the tone quality and it's flexibility.

I hope this is not too OT.

Greetings to all from Germany, Pablo

I absolutely love the classic sunburst with the binding. But my Precisions are already sunburst and I liked to get another color, this is why I prefered cherryburst for the G&L...

EDIT: I speak as if I had a choice. As mentioned before I bought the bass second hand...

4stringdrums;
briefly; it's nicely beaten in;) Lots of road wear for a bass I was told was "a studio bass;' but I don't mind. I'd rather have a player than a show piece.
It wieghs at least a half ton. It's a great dense punchy sound.
The nut is cracked in the bottom of the E string channel-super glue shoudl fix it.
Aside from that, it was filthy, and needed a wicked cleaning. Which revelas that the fingerboard could really use a thorough oiling.
Aside from that, seems fine. Can't wait to work it.
