Ahhright! Let's talk some Music Man! I'll kick it off by mentioning the new dual pickup StingRays!

We've got both the HH and HS models in stock now and have put them through the paces pretty well! Good stuff! Now we have more Music Man goodness than ever!

Anyone have any questions about the new models...existing models...pics of your MM baby...whatever it is, post it here!

Peace!

Here's one with a fingerprint on the lens.:hmm: Out of batteries.
Traded in a Jazz I got a few weeks ago that just didn't do it for me. I happier now.

I would have given you a shot James if it wasn't a trade in. I'm not cruel enough to burn a guy out of a commission unless he's a jerk.

Instead of a fingerprint you could have said that there is an aura to this bass that frequently shows up in photographs.

I have been looking at these... Selling the Warick Streamer Stage II so I can have one of these actually... Plus I can have cash again because it is half the price of the Warwick...

Help me out, buy my Warwick so I can get one of these.

Well, what can you you tell us about the Stingray 5 HS? The addition of the, dare I say, "Jazz" - ish single coil pickup, intrigues me. I've always wanted a white on white w/ white pg bass but thought the maple on the Musicman may be a bit too bright for most of my gigs. (horn bands, R&B, dance disco stuff) I'm now thinking that the added single coil may just be the remedy.

Whadya think? What are folks saying about this set up?

Also, why haven't you posted pics of the new basses. Musicman's site's product finder says you gotta bunch of the dual pickup basses in stock. s'this true?

thanks!

The HS SR5 is way cool! It's pretty much what you'd expect, classic SR5 with the added versatility of a J style pup...no smoke and mirrors there. It does the job well and both the HS and HH models are a welcome breath of fresh air for the StingRay line.

The only complaint that I might have is that there is a noticeable drop in output when soloing the J pup. But that's to be expected with single coil pickups.

As far as the inventory, YES, we have about 10-15 SRs in stock that aren't on the site yet. We're in the process of a fairly significant renovation at the shop that has us backed up a bit on the site.

But, when we do get them out there, be prepared! Part of our renovation was to add a photo suite that allows us to take some KILLER pictures!!! You might not be able to resist when you start browsing our site and we've totally refreshed the pictures of the basses...

By the way, any bass you see on our site is the ACTUAL bass that you get when you place an order online.

Peace!

Hi Rod,
Sorry man, we can't ship Music Man outside of the US... :( Our dealer agreement with Ernie Ball prevents us from shipping MM product overseas.

However, for most other brands, if there isn't a dealer in your country, we can more than likely ship to you.

Some brands, we can ship, but there may be no warranty support if you have a problem.

Let us know how we can help!

I have played and owned Roscoe's, F Bass, MTD, Warwick , Sadowsky and many others. When I first plaed a Stingray HH I was in love. TO MY ears it leveled every bass that I ever played or heard. Paired up with my Aggie gear it is the SOUND that I was hearing in my head for all of these years. I am a sucker for Black/Rosewood and Natural/Maple basses so My wife bought me the Black/Rosewood for my upcoming 30th Birthday in August and I got the natural/Maple one for myself. I can finally stop trying out other basses and just play:hyper: I have to wait til aUGUST14TH to play the black one but it is in my basement wrapped up tightly for now.

If 5 string is your deal, I read there will be a 20th ani SR5 :) I'm holding out for that one, after my HH SR5 comes (aka workhorse).

Went to the fireworks at a local town today, and a friends band was playing. Of course their bass player was gettin' down (country style) on a natural/rosewood SR5 single H. Sounded pretty darn good, even if he was using old trace gear heheh.

You know guys, the sound of musicman basses suck, unless you like that thunderous, growling, in your face, grab you by the tonsils and own you like a paddle ball sound.

I mean, really!! You can't even get a decent thin, weeny, treble out of one if you try.

When I was recording the Mr. Rogers neighborhood soundtrack, I tried to use one, but had no luck at all. I had to go buy a Harmony bass from sears and roebuck.

Now there's a bass!!!

LOL. Seriously guys those are some great looking basses. I'm jealous.

I will when I get an HH - which James should have to me near December. Both of these are HS. I played both last night for the first time with my band (we have not played togther for about 5 weeks - vacations etc got in the way) - and both of these babies killed. Great tone and fit well in our music. I was surprised that I played both in humbucker only mode more than dual pick up mode. On some mellower tunes I used the neck pickup only - very cool to be able to switch sounds/tones so easily.

The covers on the MM pickups aren't replaceable either. The pickup has to come from the factory white.

Joel B
08-28-2006, 10:10 AM
Sean, do you have the ability to remove the pickups yourself?

If so, you could use acrylic paint. Just scuff the plastic a little with 100 grit sandpaper, spray kills primer on it, and then paint them yourself, after taping off the poles.

It would be permanent, and look nice.

Orrrr, you could wait for the white factory ones, and switch them out.

I think they would look nice in a pale chartreuse. LOL

I purchase from a lot of places, and will continue to do so, but I just added one to the list. Needed a Stingray now since I'm about to start gigging again, and wanted something I would take places I wouldn't take a Sadowsky or MTD USA for any # or reasons. I've had 2 MM's so I knew what I wanted. Ended up w/a HH Stingray 30th aniversary model. Now the only problem is, this is a really nice Bass too.:hmm: They have a good inventory, had plenty of opitions to choose from. Fair pricing, especially when you take off the TB discount they give TB'ers. They are sponsers of TB. Helps pay the bill so we have a place to chat. Got it in 2 days.

Excuse the mess, I have a 13 week old Doberman puppy, and I'm not a steller housekeeper to begin with.

I am ignorant about the way the pricing works on MM.

Why is this bass:

http://www.theperfectbass.com/explore.cfm?STORE=Y&N=122&SN=154&CT=101a&PG=100603101&W=STORE&P=N&S=1001081&U=1&SS=1&CR=Y

So much cheaper than this bass:

http://www.theperfectbass.com/explore.cfm?STORE=Y&N=122&SN=154&CT=101a&PG=101242101&W=STORE&P=N&S=1001081&U=1&SS=1&CR=Y

I understand there are color pricing differences but I would think if anything a trans would be more expensive than a solid color (the wood can't be really ugly). I see there is a pickguard difference but that doesn't seem to account for $300!

(note, I'm not questioning the prices themselves, which seem good, I'm wondering about the differences.)

ThePerfectBass

Hi turtle,
The difference is color, pickguard and matching headstock. We also have a pricing error on the trans gold model... Music Man increased prices not too long ago and it seems this one got priced using the old numbers from Music Man.

Buy it now before we can change it and get a deal! ;)

Peace!

Thanks! Good to know...I hadn't noticed the headstock. I know it takes more work on EB's part to match the headstock but I actually think they are hideous...especially the darker colors...prefer the unmatched plain headstocks.

ThePerfectBass

Some matched heads look awesome... Others, not so much. I waffle back and forth depending on the color... :)

I'm very interested in seeing the Bongo 6 when it comes out.

That will be EBMM's first real 6 string bass, won't it??

Well both Fender and Musicman are going to have to offer a longer scale length before I own one of there 5 strings, you can't just make a wider neck and slap it on a bass with a larger pickup, if you are going to make a 5 string you have to build the bass around that B string IMO... and Fender and Musicman has yet to deliver.

I dis agree. I own a EBMM Bongo 5 and a 34 scale Ibanez 6 string and both have very tight B strings. I'm not says a 35 wouldn't help, but its not a nessicity.

Hmm. The low B on my SR5 is every bit as good as the low B on my 35" scale Spector, but whatever.

Hmm. The low B on my SR5 is every bit as good as the low B on my 35" scale Spector, but whatever.Been using mine in practice since I got it. I have some nice 5'ers. Yeah there's a difference between the MM and a $4000 Bass, but I think it hangs in there just fine.

^ I agree. The MM does not have the low B that my Roscoes did, nor that of my Modulus'.

But I also find it to be very usable, and well balanced with the other strings. I have found that it hangs with just about any bass in its price range ($1500-$2000) that I have played/owned.

ThePerfectBass

I'd add that it's one of very few basses in it's class (both price and quality) that are still made in the USA.

We must not be playing the same basses for sure. My old Fender USA Jazz Deluxe V and the Musicman SR5 I got from the perfect bass had excellent B strings. My Ken Smith BSR5J and Sadowsky are also 34" scale 5 strings, and their Bs are both better than my MTD 535 with its 35" scale (though it is not bad either) and were equal to my Roscoe LG3005 and Modulus Q5.

The B on the stingray is perhaps one of the only B strings out there that I think sounds as good slapped as the other 4 strings.

Hey James,

Any chance MM would do a "Perfect Bass / Talk Bass" limited edition in a color that we vote on? If we pre-order 20 or so, would that do it? (sonic blue! sonic blue!)

Lakland did that w/ the Dudepit, and it was a good success.

ThePerfectBass
06-26-2007, 06:55 PM
We can absolutely do a Lakland project, we would be looking to have about 15 pre-orders on a Lakland project...

We haven't talked to Music Man about doing a TPB project, but we'll be happy to look into it and let you know!

Peace!

Sweet...check out the MM discontinued colors thread....so many great colors there and the current offerings are so... bor-ring. :hiding: yes, i realize MM probably sells over 50% in black/natural. hence the need for a special zany edition :bassist:

You dont need a longer scale length to have a better B string. SR5s have great B strings, you just need to play some that are not chilling in GC, set up terribly, with some floppy light gauge strings. Throw some power slinkies on there and you are set. My B string on my hh sr5 rivals everything I have played. (note: Roscoes have amazing B strings which nothing can really beat IMO)

A 37" Dingwall B might give a Roscoe a run for the money ;)

How up to date is your inventory on Stingrays and Sterlings? More specifically do you have new stuff that hasn't made it onto your website?

Brandt@TPB

HiCyborg,

Our Music Man inventory is 100% accurate! If you see on the site it is in stock. When new product arrives its usually posted within 48 hours and most of the time its up quicker than that. I know we have several basses on-order and we should start to see them trickle in within a month. If you are looking for a particular bass let me know and I will check our PO’s to see if we have it or one similar on order.
