ThePerfectBass 03-16-2006, 10:50 PM Let's kick off another thread...
Post pics of your Modulus, post your questions, comments and other general chatter about your favorite (or least favorite) models, option combos etc!
Peace!
Ryan L. 03-19-2006, 12:45 AM Here's a pic of my '99 Quantum 6. I had a Quantum 5 before this one. Both with the Bart pups and 3 band EQ.
I have never been a fan of the Quantums with the EMG's. IMO, they just sound too sterile and brittle for me. I have played a few Flea basses, but they never really did it for me, for some reason. I admit, I have never played one with the Lane Poor pup, which is supposed to be the best of the Flea's, according to some here, but I have played all the other pickup options that are/were offered. Never had the opportunity to play any of the Modulus Genesis or VJ basses.
Since recieving my Roscoe SKB3006, my Modulus doesn't get much play time anymore. I still dig it, but it has really taken a back seat to the Roscoe. I am thinking about putting it up for sale to finance another Roscoe, but I am going to have to see about that--not sure I wanna part with it just yet. (and no, this is not a for sale ad snuck in here;) ).
Akito 03-19-2006, 04:09 PM Modulus Quantums are my favorite basses bar none.
Does Modulus still offer a lifetime warranty on their necks if you are the original owner?

Yep!
seansbrew 03-23-2006, 04:18 PM I love my Modulus Quantum, this bass has seen alot of other basses come and go. This bass looks, plays, sounds and feels awesome.

Ryan L. 03-31-2006, 09:00 AM Wow. 8 pages in the Roscoe thread, and only 5 replies here so far. I guess Modulus basses aren't as popular.

You're right, Modulus basses aren't that popular. That is why you should sell me your Q6 :smug:

PM on its way to you.;)
DrMWP 04-11-2006, 10:46 AM I have a VJ4 (Pics to follow), barts w/ aggie obp-1. I don't find the sound to be sterile or brittle, hi-fi certainly, but still round and fat. Playablilty is great! (once I got the action worked out). The slap tone gives me perma-grin :)
pickles 04-11-2006, 01:28 PM I sold my Modulus a while back, and I'm missing it big time!
I'm jonesing for a Q5 with a wood fingerboard all of a sudden ... is that a standard option on Q5s? Does anybody have one?
Robert TPB 04-11-2006, 01:46 PM Yes, they do make them. We have a Q5 on the site with a Chechen top and fingerboard.
pickles 04-11-2006, 01:51 PM How would you describe the difference in tone?
ThePerfectBass 04-11-2006, 01:55 PM How would you describe the difference in tone?
The Chechen gives is a bit more organic tone...and a little warmer... Less "compressed" feeling...
pickles 04-11-2006, 02:08 PM The Chechen gives is a bit more organic tone...and a little warmer... Less "compressed" feeling...
Is chechen the only wood they use for fingerboards?
ThePerfectBass 04-11-2006, 05:04 PM Is chechen the only wood they use for fingerboards?
On the Genesis you can get Chechen or Maple.
On the Quantum you can get Chechen.
On the VJ you can get Chechen and on the GVJ you can get Chechen or Maple.
The Flea only comes with the phenolic board...
Peace!

jazzbo58 04-29-2006, 03:31 PM I've just came across this thread. Here's a couple of pictures of my Quantum 4.
It has a Myrtle Burl top, Bartolini's and an Aguilar OP3 pre.
I love the way it plays and sounds!

Nice
rockstarbassist 05-28-2006, 10:24 PM Ever since I saw Stefan Lessard play his green Q5 on the "Listener Supported" DVD I wanted a Modulus. It just blew away everthing I've ever heard (even to date) on a live recording before.
Well, about a month ago I realized my dream (well half of it- a fretted is to come! ;))

This takes the cake over Spector, Lakland, Roscoe, everything I've put my hands on.
It's got EMG's, but I like EMG's alright. My fretted will have Barts for sure, tho just for a different sound. On the fretless they really make the notes shine. And it's anything but "brittle" and "sterile". Words like "even", "smooth" and "solid" come to mind. And in the humid-crazy state I live in, having this neck that won't warp after a 2-hour drive is unbeatable.
Enjoy!

Definitely will! Thanks for that.
As I just got this, a new bass probably isn't too high on my GAS list. Cabs are in order this summer, and a new bass either next fall or early next Spring.
Btw, do you know if Modulus is shipping all the Q's stock with EMGs? I haven't seen a new one with Barts in a while.

If cabs are the priority, check out Glockenklang and Phil Jones Bass! Awesome stuff!
As far as Modulus goes, the specs on the pups are up to the dealer. Modulus produces nearly 100% of the basses to order from the dealers. So if you're seeing a lot of EMGs, it's because that's what the dealers are ordering.
We have several Fleas and Q's in stock with Bart pups...
Peace!
KeithPas 05-30-2006, 04:30 PM This might not count but I used to own a FrankenFender with a Modulus VJ neck and it is the bass that I regret selling the most.
malicous 05-30-2006, 07:02 PM I played a Q5 today at GC, and I was an instant convert! I have played the flea model before and didn't like the tone or the setup, so I was somewhat skeptical about the Quantum, but man I was wrong. The neck is so comfortable, the eq is so responsive and versatile, and that B string made the whole room shake. I now have serious Gas for a Q6. You guys who own these basses are so blessed. Hope to join the club in a few months.

:)
ThePerfectBass 06-01-2006, 10:44 AM We just traded in a 2002 Q4 on a 06 VJ. If anyone's interested we can hook up a TBer at $1,700.00 shipped!
It's in great condition, but has one ding near the input jack and some minor buckle rash that should be able to buff out...
It's a 5A Quilt top with the Trans Sienna finish. BEAUTIFUL! The customer bought this bass from us originally, so we know the complete history of the bass.
If anyone's interested, you know what to do!!
PEACE!!!

I have one. :) Just got it, actually. Shoot me a PM w/ any questions you might have and I'll answer to my ability! :)
Crazykiwi 08-13-2006, 03:43 AM I have a pair of Modulus Q5 Sweetspot basses. One fretted, one fretless. I've had a love/hate affair with them as they require quite specific set ups to get the best out of them.
For example, I bought the fretted 5 originally and it has an EMG soapbar and eq. I've been a little frustrated by this bass because its lacked lower mids (around 400hz) which meant that it always got lost in the mix. I've ended up having to boost something like +15db to even get it to sound anything like my other warmer sounding basses. However I discovered two things:
1) SWR SM400 amp + Goliath 4x10 cab compensates for that lack of projection at 400Hz beautifully and sweetens the tone a lot without losing any of that nice growl.
2) The fretless doesn't have that issue because it has a Bartolini soapbar and eq which has a slightly warmer bias.
I'm a great believer in matching basses and amps BTW. But my backline is biased towards my Smith basses which sound better with harder sounding amps like the GKs I have. The fretted modulus sounds way too aggressive but the fretless sounds great.
So I may well end up replacing the EMG set up in the fretted bass with a Bartolini version. An unusual experience for me because I usually remove any Bartolini pickups and eq's from any basses I own.
Just goes to show the value of staying open minded and being prepared to match elements regardless of previous experiences.

Had this for two weeks and I'm definitely a convert. Found out that the tighter spacing was totally me, and I must say that I was inspired by Janek's post about preferring tight spacing for the economy of motion it provided. I totally agree. This bass has a full range unencumbered sound that allows me to use my technique, not eq, to get whatever sound I want. I think it will make me a better player in the long run.
Oh, and in a month or so, I am going to drop in a sadowsky pre w/VTC, as I absolutely loved the TONE of every Sadowsky I've played or owned, just not the playability and wide spacing. Hope this will be the best of both worlds.
Oh, and my Q5's slaptone in reminescent of my old Ken Smith BSREG6-string. Mmmm b#@tch!!!!!!

I just got myself a Modulus Quantum 5 Semi-hollow with a Spruce Top and it has a ROSEWOOD board. I talked to a self-proclaimed Modulus expert and he said only a handful of these were made. It also came stock from the factory with Aero pickups and an Aguilar OBP-1 Pre. Quite a different kind of Modulus to say the least!

I played one of those one time at a upscale shop. Through an Epifani rig.
It was disgustingly awesome. They make a semi-hollow w/ the graphite and stock options, but yeah w/ the wood board it was a totally different animal.
bobbykokinos 09-01-2006, 12:13 AM I'm a little late to this thread but here is my 1996 Quantum 6 Sweet Spot with Turbo Option (extra pickup behind the sweet spot). I'm the original owner.. Someone ordered it and never picked it up from the store, so I got it..

anyone here own multiple Q's, but with different pickups and/or preamps? if so, can you discuss what you've got in them and what the differences are like? (and perhaps post some mp3s?)
i've got a Q6 i keep thinking of changing the electronics in...possibly just the preamp, but maybe the pickups too. its currently got bartolini pickups and a bart 3 band 18v preamp. (i forget the preamp model at the moment, and i havent taken out the pickups to try to determine what type they are yet.) i'd like to get a more solid, punchy, aggressive, and cutting tone than i can get from the barts. they are more open, airy and smooth than i would prefer. i am also looking to retain the hi-fi tone, particularly since this bass will be in the mix with lots of synths.
i am undecided on which parts really ought to be swapped out, or with what, and i would be very interested to hear the opinions of other Q owners on this.
btw, here is the bass the electronics will be going in. its a pre truss rod Q, the bridge is a 2Tek, and the neck is tinted.

jazzbo58 09-01-2006, 10:40 AM I love the tint on that neck! As far as pre amps I have the Aguilar OP3. I like the varity on tones I can get from it. Good luck with such a beautiful instrument.
Cheers,
Jim
I love the tint on that neck!
thanks, i dig it too. :) it was a rather nice surprise when i first opened the case, since the previous owner didnt mention or photograph the neck tint. (of course they also didnt mention the scratches, dings, and they said it had a truss rod...but thats a different story.)
As far as pre amps I have the Aguilar OP3. I like the varity on tones I can get from it.
did you have something else in there first, or did yours come with the aguilar? what pickups do you have in your bass?
Good luck with such a beautiful instrument.
thanks :)
jazzbo58 09-02-2006, 10:12 AM Mine came with the Aguilar preamp. It also has the Bartolini's.
I'm not so sure I'd worry about not having a truss rod. I think I could use the neck as a baseball bat and it wouldn't effect it.
Cheers,
Jim
thanks for the info.
i've been considering the OBP3. its reasonably priced and i remember being impressed with it the one time i had a chance to try it. (swapped out a bart pre for the OBP3 in a customer's MTD.)
on the neck, yeah im not too worried about the lack of truss rod. the neck is perfectly set the way it is, and over the year i've had the bass its been rock solid no matter what the change in temp or humidity has been here.

Miles Berry 09-14-2006, 11:42 PM I might pull the plug on one used one for a good price, its a newer one thats just barely in my price range. So we'll see, I will get one though, oh yes, I will.

Love that color! Wish mine was red instead of green!
My Q6SS turbo has Duncan basslines and pre. Not sure which model yet as the original owner installed them. They are very punchy and seem to have more high end then the barts I've heard, not as growly as I would like but definitely strong highs and mids and I tend to cut through fairly well even with the eq flat.
Love that color! Wish mine was red instead of green!
thanks, yeah the color is pretty cool. in person, its more purple / red-violet than the picture shows. i believe it is their red over blue finish. i dig the way green modulus Q's look too. and thanks for the pickup info. :)
James Hill 09-21-2006, 11:02 AM I finally had to take advantage of the pricing on the Modulus basses at The Perfect Bass. I should have the Blue/Green FB5 by Friday.:hyper: I've dealt with several great bass shops this year and Brandt and James are some of the very best. Don't hesitate to do buisness with these guys because they will do what it takes to make their customer happy. Below are some shots of both my Flea Basses, once the five arrives I'll post some shots of both with my rig.:) Thanks again to Brandt for the fresh setup.

ChrisPbass 10-27-2006, 11:43 AM One of my favorite bass tones is Phil Lesh's Modulus tone. Anyone know what he uses?
JWBass 12-27-2006, 11:44 AM Phil has a custom Quantum 6 Wide body with a 34" scale instead of a 35" scale. He says he likes the 34" better because it's easier to play.
As for my Modulus; it ws purchased at a NAMM show in Tennessee in 1993 from Geoff Gould himself. It's an M-92 5 string (now commonly known as the Quantum SweetSpot) in a custom Candy Apple green with the white pearl pick guard. It's my everyday bass and it plays a nice now as it did the day I first took it out of it's case. Since it's now 13 years ols and a one of a kind, I'm looking to retire it with a new Quantum 5 or 6. I haven't decided. I have to pay the car off first however. :eyebrow:
iriegnome 02-13-2007, 08:29 AM One of my favorite bass tones is Phil Lesh's Modulus tone. Anyone know what he uses? It also has 26 frets!
iriegnome 02-13-2007, 08:34 AM I actually prefer the Genesis basses. They are a little more organic sounding and have a better feel to me. I have a G4 custom that I made. It has a Warmoth Dinky P White Korina Solid 1 piece body. EMG's and an EMG Preamp, 18v. Complete with Gotoh tuners and a Badd Ass II bridge. My neck is a Genesis Jazz neck with a Chechen Board and Alder wrap.
It is a awesome bass to play and look at.
juanete 02-23-2007, 12:34 PM I bought a used VJ Fretless and I wanna replace its neck with a moses (fretted).
DO you know if a Moses MJ144 neck would fit well on a VJ??
ThePerfectBass 02-23-2007, 01:18 PM Hi Juanete,
That may be a better question for the people over at Moses... We are not a dealer for them, so I really can't say what the MJ144 neck will do for a VJ.
However, you can get a replecement neck from Modulus that will fit, which we can help you with. Feel free to contact Brandt, our Sales Manager at 866.751.3220 or brandt@theperfectbass.com and he can get you a quote.
Peace!
juanete 02-23-2007, 01:49 PM Perfect. I will give you a call. thank you
Bigoo7e 02-23-2007, 02:16 PM I remember a year or so back seeing pictures of a Flea 4 string models with a J/MM pickup config with a Leo Quann bridge, I have yet to see another since that day. Fellow TPB peepz and TB members am I smoken crack or did they used to make them or is that an option that you can still get?
Peace,
ThePerfectBass 02-23-2007, 02:43 PM The Baddass bridge is an option on 4 string models only I believe... The MM/J config is indeed an option although we don't get them in very often. The single MM and dual J configs seem to have been more popular in the past.
We can however custom order any config you're looking for. The LQ bridge is still not an option on the 5 string Flea though...
Peace!
