VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : new tribute headstock
telekaster 05-10-2006, 12:27 PM Have you guys been seeing the new Tribute headstocks? I heard several months ago that they were going with the regular G&L logo and putting "Tribute series" in small letters. It looks like they're doing transparent backs now too!

Do you guys like the idea or not? I like it enough that it makes me kick myself a little bit for not waiting, but it's not that big of a deal really.
I just got a Tribute (with the old stlye headstock) a few weeks ago and it looks and plays outstanding. I'd want to upgrade to a USA version, but I'm having a hard time convincing myself to since the Trib sounds awesome. The only reason I'd order a new USA version would be to get the color combo I want (black with natural wood binding and a maple neck - either birdseye or gun oil tint orbrdseye/gun oil tint). Mmmmm...
I like it. I always thought there was no reason to advertise the bass being a Tribute.
lpdeluxe 05-10-2006, 03:28 PM I don't think it makes any difference. It's still the same bass, idn't it?
I'm not ashamed that my Tribute by G&L isn't a **real** G&L. It's sure as hell a real enough bass.

The american wood used in the US G&L's is ..well...er...it's more american!
:D
lpdeluxe 05-10-2006, 06:25 PM Maybe that's the problem.

Same here. There's no shame in having the Tribute name on it.
mvw356 05-11-2006, 05:11 PM i don' t see any shame in having tribute written on the headstock. anyone to whom tribute means anything will probably know that its an import g&l. same with lakeland/ skyline, sadowsky/metro. i don't think anyone is ashamed for their metro or skyline.
WyattUrp 05-17-2006, 07:40 AM I tried out a Tribute l-2000 factory setup tag was 5/03/06 I thought it was odd that tribute is so small, also the bridge just says G&L not TRIBUTE anymore. It was excellent makes me really wonder is an american one worth $600.00 more:confused:
Rezdog 05-17-2006, 09:04 AM Greetings from the North,
A couple of years ago I checked out a US made G&L L2500 and thought it was great. A few months ago I finally played a Tribute and although somehow it must have escaped from the finish quality control people it sounded awesome. The body wood was horribly mismatched and the routing for the pickups was oversized enough to allow ventilation, but it did sound awesome. And before I get jumped on I know this ugly one I tried out is not the norm.
Anyway....I ended up ordering a US made L2500 on Easter weekend. The colour selection for the Tributes is limited and there's no way you can get a matching headstock as yet. So for the price of getting a Tribby refinished I decided to spring for the MIA.

DumbChild 05-26-2006, 08:09 PM Im thinking of getting a tribute, only because im not prepared to pay 3 grand for a US made one, id rather grab a tribute and a new amp. Anyways i think that would be neat if they made the tribute smaller, not that there is anything wrong with it being the size it was/is. Only tributes ive seen have it in a large size..

New G&Ls usually go for just over a grand, not three. I bought my US made blueburst L2k for a grand flat (after a lot of bargaining).

Tell me about it!
I wasnt to happy, but i will be buying a tribute insted because theres no way im paying that, and if i was id be getting myself a custom:P
db4usa 06-01-2006, 05:56 AM I absolutely love my Tribby-5. I've been playing bass for 30 years, mostly vintage Fender Jazz's. I get tons of compliments about it's sound and it plays like my old Jazz, maybe a little better. I leave my EB SRV in the rack for backup. That's a pity too, since it's brand new. I just cannot coach the sound out of it the Tribby offers. So I really don't care if it says Tribute, made in Korea or anything else. The prestige is in the final product for me. The sound.

Chris Rhoades 06-10-2006, 12:41 PM $2900 ???? Just buy me a $1000 plain ticket and i'll fly one over!
lpdeluxe 06-10-2006, 01:50 PM Just played my Tribute L2K in a 7-hour gig. I took two basses, but (no surprise) there was only room for one. No problemo. The Trib kicked ass all night long.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing! :D
Bang for buck, Tributes are one of the best deals going. You won't get matching headstocks or natural wood bindings; but you get a kick-butt workhorse that does nail the G&L tone and feel as far as I can tell. Hell, they're using the same pickups and ash bodies (well, for premium models). The fancy domestic options are really just gravy (albeit is, pretty snazzy gravy!). I'd love to eventually have a domestic L2500 with gun-oil Birdseye maple neck and board, with see-thru white finish with matching headstock. However, blowing the kind of cash that it would take to get a beauty like that for me right now would flat out be stupid when I can get a Tribute for a fraction of the price. Now down the road when a certain student loan is paid up and I'm scoring more happening gigs, then we'll talk about buying my dream G&L. But for now I think a Tribute more than fits the bill (unless I get pretty damn lucky and score a domestic L2500 on eBay on the cheap!).

telekaster 06-12-2006, 05:16 PM I'm glad to see this thread has sparked a little discussion... I've played several gigs now with my Tribute L-2500 and I can't get over the tone! I plan to someday order a USA one to my exact specs, but for now the Tribute kills! Just the other day a guy that plays a mean jazz bass told me that he loved my tone! What he heard out in front was my L-2500 through the DI from my Eden WT550 (a great head for G&Ls!).
Wwolof 02-02-2008, 07:42 PM I've had all the vintage Fenders (61 P, 67 J, etcetry) and I love my Trib L2K best of all. It sounds absolutely *slamming*.
Kompressaur 02-04-2008, 03:26 AM I just picked up a natural ash/maple Tribute L2K over the weekend. It has the G&L logo with smaller "tribute series" legend underneath. The bridge says Tribute. and the serial no. is 05088208.No declaration/label of country of origin I can see.Not that it matters but is it Korean or Indonesian?
I dressed the fret ends on both edges of the board and rolled them over a little and now it feels 1st class. apart from the rather soulless way the neck/headstock volute isn't blended in but rather straight cut I absolutley love the fit and finish. It really is a stunning piece for the money I paid here in the UK. I'm after a JB-2 and I may just now order a Tribby one from from Nitrotone as I'm very very pleasantly surprised at the build quality of these things.
I've a USA G&L lovely on the way to me this week so I'll post up pics of the herd next weekend.
cheers
Komp
edit : aargghh! no sunburst/rosewood option on the JB-2:(
Thunder Pulse 02-04-2008, 11:31 AM Not that it matters but is it Korean or Indonesian? If the headstock logo says "G&L" in black it's Korean. If it's in white it's a newer Indonesian model.

Well put!!
Ok, so it's a 4-string ASAT (cooler) w/out a matching HS...
but it is blonde, w/ TNG, natural wood binding, and BE 'board, no dots.
Like to show it; love to play it!:D
is korean better quality than indonesian or are they about the same?
If the headstock logo says "G&L" in black it's Korean. If it's in white it's a newer Indonesian model.
El_JimBob 02-07-2008, 04:19 PM The Korean models had the 'black' logo, and later the 'white' one for a short time - they had a sticker on the back saying 'made in korea'.
The Indonesian models have the same 'white' logo but with a 'made in indonesia' stamp on the back.
Kompressaur's sounds like a Korean. There is no difference between the two - Cort, who build them, just happened to move most of their guitar building to Indonesia in the past year or so....
