He is playing tonight at Heart Plaza in Detroit and I am trying to decern if it is a must see or what. It's a 90 mile drive for me one way, but the show is free.

I'm with Chris; I saw him for the second time with that same group last year and loved it. BTW, I drove a lot further than 90 miles both times and never regretted it... OKC to Wichita = ~240 miles OKC to Talequah = ~200 miles Monte Wil Davis 08-31-2001, 11:46 AM I've never seen him live, but I've various recordings of him - most recently with Gary Burton ("For Hamp, Red, Bags & Cal"), and I'm in awe of his playing. Great sound, fabulous groove, and very tasteful. If he were performing within 90 miles of where I live, I would be there like a shot! ...and the show is free? God! Well, why not. If you like jazz, he's well worth seeing. Put another way, I'm paying about $60 to go see him with my wife and daughter (who also plays bass) in two weeks, and I've seen him twice before. Rockinjc 09-04-2001, 08:45 AM Christian Mcbride was good man! He did his own tunes and covered others including Steely Dan's Asia and some Jaco tune. He rocked in a grand way. Slow and pretty or fast and funky didn't matter it was all so fine. At one point I had to escort my date to the bathrooms and wound up waiting by the fountains under the big projection screen. It was kind of nice seeing my mans hands magnified to two meters across. I saw McBride play live last year at the North Sea Jazz festival in Holland. He wasn't playing with his own band, (don't remember who he was playing with), but it sure was a great show! Although I must admit I was not really impressed with his "live sound". Of course, it could've been a lousy PA-man ... KN pedro 10-13-2003, 12:03 PM I've seen Christian twice. Once at the Richard Davis Bass Camp where he jammed with a pickup trio and blew a room full of world class bass players minds and the second time was with Roy Haynes. He plays with lots of attitude. It used to be held on the Edgewood College Campus but I believe it has moved to UW. Which rules out a lot of us from attending!! ;) I must say that in Jazz education classes,workshops, events etc. that I have attended over here - there are very few young bass players - in fact I can only think of one under 20. Most seem to be like me and have played in rock/pop groups first and then decided that they would like to play Jazz later on - although I have met many young Sax,trumpet,flute piano players etc. I expect it's very different for "classical" musicians though? pedro 10-14-2003, 08:37 AM Bruce, my son attended Richard's bass camp for several years. Its a good camp with excellent clinicians. I never saw the stats but my guess is that the slight majority of the students are in a classical vein. The rest are jazz and electric players. (Jerry Jemmott does an excellent job with the electric bass players and it's an honor to be coached by a legend.) |
