Thinking of trying this combination on a precision bass body. There seems like there would be plenty of room on the body, but pickup placement would be the question. Anybody have anything like this? Any input would be appreciated.

Yes, 5 total. But the JJ's would be together acting as a humbucking pair. So, I guess you could also say 3.

I see what you mean. So you're saying maybe have a JJ/P/JJ or something of the like. Aren't there soapbars that would have the same characteristics as a P-pup? Or would that not work because the EA and DG strings would be picked up by the same coil if it were a soap bar?

No you can't. But you can leave the "EA" half of the precision in place and a do "reverse P" thing, leaving the MM in it's traditional sweet spot. Pretty good compromise if you ask me.


For reference, here are the locations I've managed to collect on the net. All measured from the 12th fret to the pickup centerline (EA pickup for the precision).

60's Jazz, Neck: 10 7/8" Bridge: 14 1/2"
70's Jazz, Neck: 10 7/8" Bridge: 14 7/8"

Well for the two J's it would be a push pull volume pot for each pair. Series parallel switching would be the intent. With the MM it would also have a push pull for series parallel switching, unless I'm unable to find a MM type pickup with 4 wires. In which case I guess that it would come wired in parallel, cause most of the ones I've seen have readings like 6k. I'm sure there are other choices. For that matter, It could end up a JJ/P/JJ, which of course has parallel series switching capabilities. Each volume would determine how much was "blended" into the output jack. No tone pot necessary. All EQ needs are handled via a digitech BP8 processor.

when i read JJ i assumed that you meant dual coils, like what you would get in a fodera or similar high end bass, but now i think about it the combo that yu mentioned might be pretty sweet as well

Since you mentioned it, what is the middle pickup on their fodera garrison bass. I can tell the two J's in there standard Jazz position, but what would you say is sitting in between? Like a soapbar MM? I'm just guessing.

The fodera matt garrison bass only has 2 pickups, thats a ramp in the middle.

it seems like if u go overboard with pups, u rele dont gain tone or sound.. from wut ive seen. one perfectly placed pup defnitely will outperform 17 pups all over the place.

that being said, dingwall pups are probably the coolest, with a neodymium technology "P pup in a soapbar" config.

irele wish i could pick up a dingwall for around 1k.

just so you know it isnt two Js its two dual coils, so you can get a humbucker sound and at the flick of a switch you get single coils.
