other than the applications for speaker coils, would it be possible to use neo's as pickup magnets that would produce the higher output at the standard size and weight?
is it even possible (the magnets are hazardous to produce) and would it sound good?
Certainly possible - the Q-tuner pickups are built around neodymium magnets. You can read about their design philosophy at www.q-tuner.com (http://www.q-tuner.com)

You are correct. The FD-3 and FD-3.4 each have neodymium magnets.
They sound great.

My Listerud (http://www.listerudbass.com/English/index_eng.htm) bass has neo pickups made by BassCulture (http://www.bassculture.de/) in Germany.
Great sound.
