VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Where can I find a bass player?
BackTrax 06-25-2006, 02:27 AM Hey all. I have a really good Classic Rock/Top 40 cover band in the Los Angeles area with plenty of gigs... and I am having a heck of a time finding a mature, reliable bass player! Where is the best place to find a bass player??? I've tried all the usual methods, but have all the bass players been abducted by aliens? :hmm:
Anyhow... if anyone knows of a good, friendly, mature, reliable bass player, please pass on the word that my band is looking. Our website is www.BackTraxMusic.com. Contact info is on the site.
We do everything from the Beatles to current day and are having tons of fun.
One note... while we get paid for most of our gigs, you can't make a living doing this!

Steve 06-25-2006, 07:33 AM I CAN NOT BELIEVE, that you're having a problem staffing that slot.
That gig looks like an absolute blast.

No kidding. That's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Would you guys consider relocating to the DC area? ;)

Nobody wants to live in DC. Crime, Traffic, Cost of Living, center of ground zero....
Florida is where they want to be. Sunny, warm, friendly, everyone wants to live in Florida.
Move to Florida...move to Florida....:D

LOL.
Shush!!! He might not know any of that stuff. :rollno: :D
Humabass 06-25-2006, 02:17 PM Everybody knows the best bassplayers are from the DC/MD/VA area: Victor Wooten, Oteil, Mshell, Gary Grainger, John Previti, Keith Horne (I think he's from Va ), JImmy Earl (MD I think), Michael Manring, and me;)
Steve 06-25-2006, 04:18 PM Well that explains it. I used to live in Greenbelt MD. so I guess I'm "from" there also.:D
They still need to move to Florida. That band could work for "The Rat" and make a grand a week plus corp. bennies each and never leave the magic kingdom

Gary, it's been about three years since I moved from L.A. to LA. Not to diss other publications (notably the one beginning with "Music" and the other "Re "), but you'll find some of the more reliable players on www.musicianscontact.com (http://www.musicianscontact.com) The site is national, but SoCal based. I always got calls for gigs. too bad I can't sit in...
john turner 06-25-2006, 04:45 PM wow, that looks like a lot of fun.
would you consider moving to atlanta?
-sigh. i didn't think so. :hyper:
john turner 06-25-2006, 04:49 PM ms. moxie is certainly aptly named. wow. hotness. :hyper: :bassist:
jmarcus2 06-25-2006, 04:50 PM Just checked your site..OMG! I played AZARs (an LA-long-assed drive) with my cover band a few years ago, AND the Riverbottom with an original
band! Does parking still suck there?
jmarcus2 06-25-2006, 05:01 PM NICE demo video! Other bands, take notes. Oh BTW, I'll be in L.A. the first week of August...
rkmullen 06-27-2006, 04:59 PM cool vid!! I'm playing with Commander Cody and his lost Planet airmen at the Whiskey A Go-Go 9/11, I'll put you on the guest list!!
ArwinH 06-27-2006, 11:10 PM I'd take that gig, can't understand why there would be any trouble finding a bass player. PM me, I know some available players that are very, very experienced and in the LA area.
I'd take it, but I'm 17 and I know some people can't get past teh age thing ;)
albass111 06-28-2006, 03:47 PM Can't commit to a fulltime cover gig, but I am available to do sub work. I play with a lot of major cover and corporate acts in town. Like many of my bass player friends in this town, we all play in a number of bands so for cover things, unless it pays ALL the bills, we have to be somewhat mercenary in our behavior when it comes to cover situations. Friends, or great orginal music, that's different.
peace,
Al
*Bump* for a righteous gig.
C'mon boys, step up, there is a bunch of you out there!!!
Pickles ???
pickles 06-28-2006, 07:48 PM Its true, all of the socal bass players have been swallowed by the black hole we call "the real estate market". It is not possible to live here and not have a full time job, so there are lots of guys who rip the bass working a day job that wears them out. I speak from experience having tried to work full time and be in a working band ... I just can't do it. Thursday night gig in LA, get back home around 3 or 4, friday morning work starts at 9! :hyper:
I have to keep my gig situation casual. Too much committment and I just can't do it. But good call posting here, you just might turn somebody up. Sadly I'm in the business of turning down gigs these days :( The rock n' roll dream is on hold for now for me.
maurilio 06-29-2006, 07:18 PM Hello,
I might be interested.... actually, I just saw your ad on MC...
I'm a full time working musician here in Los Angeles (check my profile).
The problem in L.A. is the $$... most of the clubs don't pay enough... If you think the time spent driving, the gas, the food, for a 4 hours gig... and obviously your own living expenses...
Pro musicians, most of the time, can not take those kind of gigs...
But email me, if you want, with more details and we'll talk :)
Thank you
Mo'
slugworth 06-30-2006, 03:05 PM I can't commit to exclusively to your band, but I'd be happy to do some fill-in dates as my schedule permits. Please check my website to see if any of my open dates are needed.
Cheers,
Slug

>>> I don't see how a full time musician in LA can make anything that comes close to a decent living. Too many unemployed musicians and not enough high paying work. Music is much more fun when you have a good paying day job and related benefits.

>>>> Good points Pickles....Depends on the day job. I'm lucky that I have flexible hours, plenty of time off, work from home 75% of the time, and the best boss in the world!!

I agree complitely!
Music is much more fun when you have a good paying day job and related benefits.
...But first you have to find a good job, and most of all enjoying it... After more then 15 years of a very good paid, but frustrating job as a technician in a telephone company...(I also had other jobs, looking for the good one) I could not take it anymore. My passion is all about music, whether playing, teaching or repairing instruments! This is my job!
Now my "regular" job is teaching in a music school...
And I'm willing to struggle, if this is what it takes to be able to do what I love!
Have a nice w-e, guys :smug:

>>> If you're making a living with music you have my respect; it ain't easy. The music business has been kind to so many, but has been cruel and heartless to so many more. the music business is tougher now that it's ever been.

MikeBass 07-01-2006, 02:24 AM Don't blame you for getting a new bass player.
The one in the video....his tone is kinda weak and thin (and it's not off the camera's mic- the sound never changes from angle to angle-it's him!), and could push a little more?!?!
Good luck!!
D.E.C. 08-02-2006, 08:53 PM Wow, you shouldn't have a problem finding a replacement. I had a guitar player once tell me that "bass players were a dime a dozen". So, if you spent $1 wisely, you could have 120 four string losers at your disposal. There, your problem is SOLVED!
P.S. IMO it is harder to find an excellent bassist than an excellent guitarist. Sorry for my sarcasm!
