Janek, have you done any studying out of the Slonimsky book, Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns, or did you get ideas that may relate to that book by just transcribing others playing?

I haven't checked out this book at all. I'm looking into it now actually. I have used the "Hannon Virtuoso Pianist". I got all my technique and practice routines from that book for ages, and still use some of them today.

Cool. I'll check out the book you mentioned. Would you say that most of your ideas have come from transcribing?

I've got the Slominsky book and have used it on and off for a few years. It's a great tool for refreshing your playing by offering sequences you may not have otherwise considered.

Also very good for pattern based material is guitarist Barry Finnerty's "Serious Jazz Practice Book" . I've only had this one for a week but it has some great ideas and is very clearly written (which can't always be said of Slominsky who uses some very "unique" terminology).

Cheers,
Alun
