I just stumbled across this interesting site...
http://www.gearchange.org
it's a site all about corny key modulations in popular music, believe it or not :)

Hah! I thought I was going to get something eduactional there. I hate cheesey key changes like that. I've always said that they are the last resort of a song writer. It's funny you posted this because it was just today at work when there was some song on the radio I don't know what it was but what I can remember was cringing and saying Auuugh! what a horrible key change! as it modulated higher. It does grind my gears (no pun intended) when I hear them.....not enough to start a website about it. But I do agree they should be wiped out. On the other hand radioheads karma police has a good key change at the end.

Here's a treat for all the UK TBers.
The original theme tune to Rainbow, including gear change and bits they faded out...

He he! Pretty funny!
I have to say, though, that there are exceptions to everything, and for me an exception to the general and largely deserved disdain heaped on this musical device is Stevie Wonder's "Golden Lady." In the hands of a genius, even a cliche can work. At times.

*LOL*
That site kicks ass. I made a submission for The Stray Cat's "Rev it up and Go". That song has a key change on almost every verse.

Is a key change really that bad? If done properly, it can change the emotional feel of the song (IMO, YMMV).

Not in and of itself. It's how it's done, when, where, why, and by whom.

Hmm. Maybe I should listen to more of the examples. I was a bit put off when I saw Steely Dan on the list. I have trouble believing that either Fagan or Becker would do it just to extend a song, or because it was unnecessary.

I don't agree with them all either. I just find musical snark mildly amusing at times.
