see you auntie

I know this topic has been done before, but my call for advice is pretty specific to my situation.
Recently, myself and the guys I play with have started writing songs after previously just playing covers. We have about six songs so far to varying degrees of quality. Before this I have never written music before.
Basically the process so far has consisted of the guitarist coming into rehersal with a riff or chord progression for the verse and chorus and a lyric sheet for the singer. I guess it's safe to say he's the song writer of the group.
He'll play what he's written to us and then it's mine and the drummers job to join in and play.
What I'm looking for is some advice from you guys in how I should be writing in this environment.
So far, when he's done playing to us what he's written, I have to ask him what chords he is playing and if he says an E and then a C or G or whatever I'll make sure I do the same. Sometimes playing the same riff but mostly playing in the same key cause that's all I really know to do.
I don't know what else I can do differently and I would like to get a bit more adventureous than just 'playing along' and I guess that's where I need some opinions of others to help me.
So I guess any advice on what I could/should be playing in order to serve the song my guitarist has written but not play exactly the same thing but something I can make my own would be helpful and most appreciated.
Edit: The notes I play in a bass line vary depending on the guitar chord being played not just the one note, it's not like I just play eighths of the one note depending on the chord played.
