hello all...im located in the albany/saratoga springs area...a little far to make it to any of the NYC g2g's...anyone else from upstate want to possibly organize one of our own? western mass/new hampshire/vermonters also welcome....hell montana residents are welcome if you feel like it! leave some ideas....

Figjam

Its a possibility. Unfortunatley there arent nearly as many people in that area as the NYC area.

gkbass13
07-14-2006, 01:37 AM
of course not, if we could get a couple more...could be a possibility, and a good time. mike dimin is form this area...maybe he would do a mini clinic or something...

BurningSkies

I would certainly be up for it. Western Mass might be a good option too. Close to VT, NH, Boston, CT, RI and NY! My schedule tightens up between mid-Aug until the beginning of Oct. though.

I'm in the same town as Burning Skies and I know there are a few others not too far. Trouble is that bass players work, and it's nearly impossible to do it on a fri of sat night.

I vote we pick a Sunday afternoon to disturb the neighbors somewhere.

im liking how this is developing. i could do a syracuse deal...my girlfriend is from oswego...not too far of a trip...i was hoping to incorporate any players just north of the city or from western new england though...maybe i will have to organize two seprate oens and enjoy both:-P. i coudl always host one in albany...i have a 2 floor hosue only being used by myself and one otehr room mate currently(until school starts again in september) lets do this!

I get back there maybe once a year on average to visit family and friends (I grew up in Colonie). I hope some day one of your GTGs coincides with my schedule.

If there ends up being some interest, I'll look into booking the community center...but we'd need a lot more interest. ;)

Otherwise, I'd still be willing to do a drive to Albany/Saratoga/W.Mass...

I'm up for this... Perhaps skies, bigfatbass, and I could carpool. We could just get selfish and host it here in the 'cuse somewhere, it is smack in the middle of the freakin' state! :hiding:

If someone in the Woodstock area can swing something with this guy http://www.mtdbass.com/

Then I'd be happy to come downstate.

I'd also like to make an NYC GTG, but they've all been bad weekends for me. Hell, I'd even make the trip to Bowlus' house just for the experience.

There are few different builders.
Tobias would be cool.

There's also Veillette in Woodstock.

The GTG could potentially be a walk through somebody's shop - then going someplace else nearby for food and bevs.

Exactly. It's a relative term. :)

When I was growing up in Queens, New Yawk,
Upstate for us meant The Catskills.

Depending on where you live, upstate can mean
Albany or Bath.

Too true. Those of us from this region don't consider it 'upstate'. We consider this Central New York.

I had a girlfriend in Poughkeepsie (or however you spell it) and when I visited her it was 'downstate'.

For gear I can bring:

Dingwall AB-1
PRS EB (2001 run)
73 Precision
MIJ mid 90's fretless Jazz
MIA early 90's Jazz w/Fralins
Schroeder 1212
Mesa 400+
and a Avatar 112SB (that I'd be happy to unload)

Regional people keep posting so we can see if there IS interest, and where people would prefer to do this.

I would bring
1997 musicman sterling

Ashdown mag300

probably. I'm picky about having my basses traveling in hot cars in the summer, though.

I'll definitely add my 2 cents for a get-together...

I could bring some Veillette instruments for show-and-tell
(and some of mine too!)...

Also - we would offer a 'shop tour' kind of thing

BSP in Kingston would be a great venue.

This should be fun - I hope it can happen.

I could definitely do 8/20 and possibly 8/27, other than that my only other option for an open Sunday is 9/17.
I'll gladly roll anywhere within 3-4 hours easy, and would happily carpool it with any other 'Cuse area cats.

Woodstock/kingston would be fine if we can actually work a little factory tour. Is the West Strand Grill down in the Rondout district still there? I'll always remember the strange gigs and spectacular food at that place.

SBassman
07-17-2006, 08:33 PM
Hmmm - West Strand Grill. That might be what is now the

If woodstock doesn't work out and Albany is better for people I work at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Albany. We have meeting space available on Sept 17 and I could probably get a good price on rooms for Saturday and/or Sunday night. I checked around and right now, unfortunately there is nothing scheduled for that weekend at the Pepsi Arena, Palace Theatre or The Egg. There are some clubs in walking distance, though.

Depending on the date and place, I can probably make it. Gigs are starting to pick up for my band, but when things are settled, I'll see what I can do... I don't have any fantastic equipment: a Fender '62 USA RI, an Am. Std. Precision, and an Ampeg V4b... but I can bring any/all of that...

I sent bigfatbass a PM asking for a spot in his ride, but I'm flexible. I don't have much in the way of sexy gear, so I'll probably just bring my '62 MIA Jazz Reissue. I'd actually like to check out some of your amps/cabs, personally. Either way, I'd naturally chip in for the gas/tolls and all that.

My truck has just been too unreliable lately, and the cost of the gas would require the mortgaging of someone's home... :)

Aug 20, 21, 27, 28 (SAts and Suns respectively)

Should we make a list of days we CANNOT make it? Then make some sort of chart and see what days best?

Its cool. Either way. Obviously, more rigs, the happier people will be. :) Any word from the Kingston/Woodstock faction about the possibility of touring, etc.?

In terms of times, I can make arrangements for most Sundays as long as it's Sept 17th or after. My August/beginning of Sept will be undo-able. Again, If that's too late for people, I'm happy to catch a later get together. Saturdays are tough for gigging guys, and I'd have to say that having BFB there would make for a great thing...we might even impose upon him for some kind of clinic?!?

Thanks for your reply, Mike. This would be fun, and its the type of thing that most of the upper NYS/Western MA, even VT. people don't get to do. Those NYC/DC/Chicago types have regular get togethers!
-----------------------------------
I'd still like to think that Sept. 17th is a strong contender.

If'n we can get some kind of amen from someone in the Kingston/Woodstock area...and get someone to poke at a few locations for us? I don't know that area in the kind of way to even think about setting up a meeting place.

I'm going to ask a mod to sticky this thread for us. and/or make the title a bit more bold.

Great!

We may have a couple of cool things on the table.

For those who haven't dug through the whole thread, here's a re-cap...

-We have a cool offer from Keith Guitars/Veillette for a looksee of that shop.

-A possible chance for something with MTD and Mike Dimin.

Both are in the Kingston/Woodstock area which should be fairly well located for most of us (yup, some driving, but up here, we expect that!)

-Loads of folks with some cool gear.

Can we get a roll call of people and which dates work?!?

Would it be feasible to look @ two shops during the day then end up with a afternoon/evening of bass tasting?!? Or is that too much to think about?

Also, I have chances to talk to Tony Levin and Gail Ann Dorsey, just to see if they're insterested. Both live somewhat in my neighborhood so It would be great if they could stop by.

Really glad to see this is growing such legs!

I'm on the list with BurningSkies and Mike D for being tied up weekends until September, and looking at the way the calendar is panning out, the 17th might be the only weekend I could attend until Oct, lol.

I should have my new rack setup completed in time :) (minus a tuner maybe) What a sweet setup I will have. Hopefully will look like this:

Demeter HBP-1 (believe i just closed a deal on one tonight)
Crest CA6 (decided to splurge on the heavyness, just bc they are the mother of all power amps)
Epifani UL310 (yum)

Hi Y'all,

The 17th sounds good to me!

I would be happy to bring some basses from Veillette,
as well as my own stuff...

I have a nice amp (Trace V-type, Mackie 1400, Epifani 2x12)
that I could bring as a general-purpose reference amp too.

I asked Mike Tobias if he'd be interested in coming
and/or sending some basses out, and he said
he might be, depending on when, where, and such...

(Mike D. - have you spoken with Mike T. yet?
I told him you might be involved...)

I'll run this by Harvey Citron too and see if he's down.

This is shaping up!

Peace,
Martin

-Possible stop/visit from Martin with a sampling from Veillette and Keith.

Anything I'm missing? When we get it a bit more finalized we should just sticky a new thread with the details and an RSVP/carpool list.

There's a place in Woodstock we might be able to use...
it's called Mountain View Studios...

It's a really nice dance/martial arts/etc. studio, which
also has music events from time to time.

It would be BYOB for sure, but the guy who runs it is really
cool, and I know him pretty well.

Downside: it's (IIRC) something like $25/hr. to rent the
space...if we all chipped in, it would probably be pretty
manageable.

Upside: It's about 4 minutes from the Veillette shop,
about 7 minutes from Citron, and pretty close to Spector
and MTD as well (although it's obviously up to those guys
as to whether their shops are open for visits).

It's also walking distance to Woodstock, which makes
food/drink/etc. very convenient.

I could look into this if anyone else is into it...it's a really
nice space.

Peace,
Martin

Here's the deal in Albany. I can get some rooms here at the hotel for $79.00 if anyone wanted to come and stay over Friday and/or Saturday night. We have some meeting space available all three days, so there would be a place for workshops, hanging out, etc. Plenty of restaurants/clubs in walking distance.

Now, I know Woodstock is a lot more attractive destination, but if you can't get anything happening there let me know and I'll put it together here.

i could chip an hour or two....Im sure we could collectively manage as much time as we wanted at $20-$25 an hour.

I'd second Martin K on proximity to woodstock vs. down in kingston (if you guys want to do shop visits...its a lot less driving)

There's a lot of good food in the woodstock area and for folks who would travel theres a really cute small motel in Woodstock called the "inn at the millstream"...Dylan and the Band used to stay there (or so the legend goes).

I'll chip in for some time too...

I'm not sure if we could do Mtn View with a totally
open-ended timing, although I could check into that.

However, we could reserve a pretty big window in the
afternoon/early evening, and it wouldn't be that pricey.

I have to leave for a gig @ 5:30 that Sunday.
Afterparty at the gig, anyone? (It's a nice little
Italian bar/restaurant in Kingston).

Any of the locations is good with me, and I am happy to load up my ride for the ride. I have more connections in the woodstock/kingston area, but Albany is great, too and is closer for me and Burning Bill. I like the idea of being able to do it all in one place, apart from any possible shop visits, obviously.

If there is enough interest from the Syracuse region I might be able to set it up to use Los Blancos van, which would mean space for all the gear/toys anyone would care to bring. We have one extra seat already claimed by rjny36, but we'll have room for at least one more body even if we don't fire up big blue for the trip.

I also have no problem chipping in for time somewhere, especially if it means we can be more open ended. 4:30 seems WAY too early if people are going to be driving 2-3 hours to get there.

Side note to Burning Bill, I'm into grabbing a room wherever we end up too, if you want to split one. The senorita de la casa knows I'm off to geek it up with my bass buddies on 9/17 and won't expect me back until some time late Monday. :D:D:D

Cool. I'm still up in the air about working on Monday, so I might have to make the trip. :( I'll nail it down in the next few days.

If there's a lot of interest locally, maybe we can take the van with most of the gear in it and I can fill my car with more people. It also might defray the cost of road juice.

Hello Upstaters,

I'm in Boston, but I grew up in Troy, NY. I make trips often to the Albany area to see my family, and would consider setting up a trip to coinside with a GTG if something gets set up. I'll keep watching this thread to see what happens.

Now, something a little off topic.

I know this is off topic, but I figured it would be the right group of people to ask.

I'm playing a wedding gig in Saratoga on 9/23 and need to hire a local sound guy and a sub guitar player. If any of you guys in the albany/saratoga area have any recommendations it would be greatly appretiated. Just send me a PM.

Thanks,

Woodstock is wicked nice, good food good people. Sounds like fun to me!

I can easily, and happily, do either, but Albany is a bit less visually inviting than the Kingston region.

Should I start a poll, or just keep up the general "hands-up for..." approach for our final location? "The ayes have it" deal seems easy enough for me, if everyone else is cool whiddat.

I suggest we put a limit on it of chiming in by end of Monday to get a general concensus (that allows 4 biz days counting today, plus 2 more for our weekend posters), and then move forward with the detail planning. This will be up on us QUICK, and we still gots some figgerin'/schedulin' to do!

Hey Y'all,

Last post before Tuesday, since I'm away from the computer at work...

Sounds like the Woodstock venue is the place!

You can check it out here: http://www.mtnviewstudio.com/

I'll secure it with Tom who runs the place. My wife runs
her business at this same space, and she said she's sure
that there will be no problem.

I think we pay at the time, or afterward, so we can just
pass the hat on Sunday itself, I think. I'll front the deposit
if one is necessary.

One consideration is that the space is mostly glass and
hardwood - so it's quite 'live' sounding...a healthy natural
reverb. I don't think it will be an issue, but any kind of
big volume might be a bit much in the place.

Also - those bringing amps, if you can, bring some kind of
rug or towel to put them on, since the floor is unfinished
for dancers/martial arts, and it's a bit less robust than the
usual stage surface :smug: .

Sounds great!

Cheers,
Martin

Anybody who wants to join the carpool from the Syracuse area should PM Burning or me so we can get a head count started. Space permitting I could even bring my blond neck upright.

I've got a set of '63s that he did a ways back (late 90's) in my MIA Jazz. I originally ordered them for my MIM fretless. I was up in Plattsburg this weeken doing some recording for a friend and I brought the Jazz and played with a pick, and the Fralin's sounded freekin' great...really screamin'.

Cool - nice job Martin!

I can do a clinic at anytime that you guys want. I have dome a number of these and have found that some always arrive late and some always have to leave early. How about a 2:00 clinic? does that work for all?

I'll try to have some new EA gear there and I'll talk to Mike T about coming down

I'll have to consider what to bring, bass wise. I know a lot of people will want to try the new HH sr5... but I am also afraid of it getting dinged etc since it still is in mint condition... and then theres the sterling, which is my babyyyy, favorite bass of all time...

70-80 minutes tops, of course pending traffic out of the capitol, and don't forget there will be at least one ride coming from Syracuse that will be practically rolling right by your door.

Burning Bill: don't know exactly what Lindy did with these pups, got them off Bayou Cable Co. Butch a few weeks back. To be honest I havent' even heard this particular set yet, but I'm sure they'll blow the stock Fenders off the mizzap, yo! I am SO hoping I can get these dropped in before the trip. Another hope is that I can replace the mid driver in one of the forementioned Flite Cabs I just blew. :rollno:

Yer problem is you PLAY too much...you need to spend more time watching TV and trolling the internerd...

You'll like the Fralins. I Spent the weekend out in Platsburg doing a recording project for a friend...mostly 180bpm punk/metal stuff. I ended up tracking about half of the material with my Jazz with the Fralins (playing with a pick) and it sounded great.

ok, thank you to everyone who has worked on getting this together...i had no idea it would develope so nicely when i started the thread...awesome.

i will probabaly be able to carpool with anyone from the capital district, and i will have space for some extra gear...a mini van. i plan on bringing my gk700rb, and either an eden 2x10 cab or 2 aguilar gs 1x12's(might be getting a sweet deal on them) as well as a bass or two.

also, if anyone has a roscoe, mtd american, elrick r-bass, f-bass, stambaugh, etc....5 or 6 string that they are thinking about parting with or that they would simply allow someone to play, could you bring it....im considering buying a singlecut 5 or an mtd/roscoe 5 or 6 soemtime this fall....unless i throw money at chris stambaugh to have one built for me...so such samples would be greatly appreciated.

peace guys, cant wait.

p.s. if anyone from the capital district wants to discuss carpool arrangments, feel free to email me at gk6709@albany.edu

Cheers,
Martin

I just talked to Martin who said he posted the final details last night - which I am not seeing - therefore to review

Date: Sunday, Sept 17
Location: Mountain View Studios, Woodstock, NY - http://www.mtnviewstudio.com/

Hi Guys,

Sorry - my post yesterday somehow didn't make it.

Mike covered basically all the major points.

-Starting around 1 PM
-Directions at the bottom of the page at

www.mtnviewstudio.com

Note about directions: They are accurate, with
one exception - when you drive through town,
"Houst Hardware" will not be on your Right as stated.
It will be on your Left. Other than that, they're right on.

-Mike's clinic around 2ish?

-Mike Tobias, Joe Veillette, myself, and Ande from Veillette
will be there.
Harvey Citron may or may not be able to make it, depending
on a possible gig...we'll see.

As Mike mentioned: PLEASE bring a carpet, towel,
or some other padding for your amp, to protect the floor.
Probably the same for hardcases that have little metal feet.

On the same note, the venue asks that you take off your
shoes in the front room before coming into the big room.

-We'll probably roll on until about 6ish? I have to leave for a
gig by 6:30 at the latest, but my wife might be able to
close up the space afterwards.

This will be fun! I'm really excited that everyone's coming
together to do this.

If anyone has any other questions or needs clarification,
I can be reached Fri. or Sat. evening at 845-246-1369.

Best wishes,
Martin

I agree.

I had a great time, but would have liked to have seen more people there. As it was, everyone was cool to hang and talk with, and it was great to have a whole bunch of regional luthiers and some players in the house.

Mike Dimin's clinic was great, he's a wonderful player and a nice guy to boot.

I really dug Martin's basses (that spruce top 6 was beautiful, too bad I'm fumble fingered above 5!), Veillette's short scale nylon string basses and of course Harvey Citron's basses (the red wide bodied chambered 5 was my style).

Michael Tobias showed up with a Zephyr series 6 string that looked every bit like some of the higher end MTD's and a sweet USA MTD that everyone sighed about.

I can't really connect anyone by their screen names, because we all used real names!

Anyway, I did take a few pictures, so once I get a chance to make them presentable, I'll throw them up!

-Mike Dimin, for the clinic and logistical support

-Harvey Citron, Mike Tobias, and Joe Veillette for
coming and showing off lovely basses

-GKBass (sorry! I am SO bad with names) for the idea!

Great stuff, but I'll never be a coffee table bass guy, nor a solo player, so it didn't particularly cater to me in the first place but I'm still really glad I went. Mike D's little ttheory clinic was very cool, and I had a great time, but it would be nice to have a more casual get together that doesn't require such a long haul.
