I've started shaping the body for the 5er I'm building, and looking at it, I thought it could be a tad big... I tried getting it into the gig bag, and it was nowhere near small enough to fit inside

Does this really matter? I know it's gonna be heavy but I can sort that out. I'm bevelling the edges and removing as much wood as possible on that which'll help somewhat...

How many of your custom 5ers are too big to fit in a standard bass gigbag? the design looks like it might work, but I don't know if I could really use a bass so big it won't even fit in a gigbag!

You can make a custom case, Its alot less effort than making a bass

Most all of my basses will not fit a standard gig bag. There are many gig bags out there you can get that are designed for 6 strings. This might be a way for you to go, and as Spud said, building a custom case is a pretty easy task.

One good starting point for future projects would be to start with more or less standard dimension blank.

I usually start with a blank that's 15" wide by 22" long. This ensures my instruments will fit standard bags and cases.

I started with a blank that size, but I guess I just poorly made my design... :hmm:

No man....your design is your vision. The case should fit the instrument, not the other way around.
