VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Passive-like tone?

Hello Roscoeheads,

After play my lovely LG3005 for 2 weeks, I'm starting to wonder if I can "sqeeze" more tones out of it.
One thing makes me picking up my Jazz now and then is that wonderful passive tone. It lacks definition or power compared to Roscoe, but sometimes it just works more for me.
I know it's like trying to have orange tastes like banana, and I'll keep that Fender for sure, but...

I've thought some ways to let it having more passive-like tone:
1. Add a graphic EQ (Boss GE7B) or parametric EQ/Preamp (Carl Martin 3-band)
2. Add a booster with tone control, like Fulltone Fat Boost.
3. Replace the stock Demeter preamp to some others with passive treble-rolloff option, like Audere or modified Aguilar preamp.
4. Totally passive, using outboard tone shaping device.

What do you TBers think? Any other method? The 3rd & 4th options are the least I'll go, since my Roscoe sounds so amazing in LOT situations, they are nearly meaningless for me.

We Chinese have a slang describing something nearly impossible to achieve as "Have a horse that runs fast and no feed". Maybe that's exactly what I'm searching for...

TIA!:hyper:

I think the passive tone knob would be a good idea. I really can't play without one. One good setup is the OBP-1 with a passive tone knob. That really gives up a fat, dark sound which still has a nice midrange. The OBP has nice way of fattening the sound and putting a little hair on it.

Before you go changing preamps, live with the bass longer than 2 weeks. I think it takes a bit longer to know an instrument.
A Roscoe is not a Jazz bass nor does it attempt to be that. You should not sell your Jazz bass for what better place to get a passive jazz bass tone than from a jazz bass. The Roscoe is a unique sounding bass in it's own right. Take the time to find out what the Roscoe "is".

Don't mess with something that works great! Keep your Jazz and switch between them as needed! IMHO

Thanks guys,
I'll keep the Fender for sure, and try to get more tones out of Roscoe without mods. ;)
Consider that, have Roscoe ever made a total passive bass? I'm curious.

Passive, sure we have! Matter of fact, our own Wilbyman is getting a Century Signature VI that will be passive in the next couple of months!

Wow, remember to show that to us then Wilby!
The GAS strikes again! A LG-3005 with High C, serial winding Barts humbucker in "Sweetspot" like Gary Willis' 5, passive tone with Orange Drop capacitor, and total bypass switch! That would be my ultimate solo bass! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

I"ll agree, live with what you have.............but, for me a passive tone rolloff is indispensible. Either the OBP-1, OBP-3 or the Audere can be wired with one. I've got an Audere with one. It sounds like a passive bass with very high quality tone shaping ablilities that always stays true to the tone of the pickups.
