VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : SF / Bay Area / Nor CA GTG???
pierce 07-31-2006, 02:27 PM I know that smperry was talking about this back in may, but i think it got shelved due to schedule conflicts. i wouldnt mind meeting everyone in the area, preferably prior to the school semester cranking off.
who else is interested?
what date/ day of the week work/dont work?
where would be a good place to meet?
what type of gtg should it be?
who is good at planning, and would be willing to coordinate this?
im not really good at planning, and i dont know where the bulk of tb'ers in this area are located. i also dont know where the best place to do this. personally, im thinking rogue ale house, or renting the sound studio for 3-6 hours at lennon studios and making it byob/f/g. both are here in sf, cause that the only area I really know. (i am willing to go whereever most of the tb'ers live.) does soemone have a big house and is willing to host? is there a music store that has a meeting room?
anyway, opinions???
pierce 08-01-2006, 11:50 AM no takers or interest?
(was there a gtg this summer i wasnt aware of?)
kserg 08-01-2006, 05:15 PM I am down!
pierce 08-07-2006, 04:56 AM I am down!
i guess if its just the two of us, then thats less of a GTG, and more like a ...Date???
:hiding:
Dave Grossman 08-07-2006, 05:22 AM Sounds good to me. Maybe we can use the Freight & Salvage Coffee House where we had our Solo Bass Night last May. Perhaps they can rent it out to us for the afternoon. They're a non-profit organization so they likely wouldn't charge us much.
Gotta go. I'll post more on this later.

We're doing a Solo Bass Night at the Larkspur Cafe Theater in San Rafael on December 7th. It will be Edo Castro (http://www.edocastro.com/), me, Jean Baudin and Jeff Schmidt. We'll be advertising it here at TalkBass with another banner ad a month before the show.
I'd like to book another one with Michael Manring in Berkeley again though. That'll probably sometime early next year.

mstott25 08-12-2006, 11:36 PM I'd definitely be down. I'm a little drive from San Francisco, I'm in Monterey, but it would be real nice to get together with some other bassists.
Are there any TB members around the San Jose, Santa Cruz, or even Seaside/Monterey area????
pierce 09-07-2006, 09:19 AM ok, looks like FretFree has picked up the ball on this

Bob Lee (QSC) 09-07-2006, 10:45 AM I'll be in SF from about October 4 to October 10. It would be cool to get together with some fellow TBers.
Blackbird 09-07-2006, 03:18 PM Folks, We have a GTG Forum now. If i'm not very much mistaken, there's a thread on this very subject there.
I'm down for a Bay area GTG, time permitting.

FretFree 09-07-2006, 08:35 PM Hello, all!
Yeah... I'm working a NorCal GTG right now.
I am, however, near Sacramento. I know that a lot of the bay folks won't be able to make it out... and on such short notice.
So, if anyone is interested, I am shooting for Saturday 9/16. Probably from noon-ish until 7-8 ish.
I would love to attend a GTG in the bay area, but the reason I'm hoping for 9/16 is because my family is out of town.
Any thoughts?
SundanceChile 10-05-2006, 02:12 PM Are there any TB members around the San Jose, Santa Cruz, or even Seaside/Monterey area????
Kind of late, but I'd be intrested, if I can manage around my hecktic schedule.
Im in Modesto so Sacramento or the Bay area is cool, I would love to meet other like minded bassist!!!! Pm me if something occurs, John

A good idea for a someone who first starting playing bass is to find a good teacher in your area. I am very happy that when i started I decided to go for a teacher, and that my teacher was jazz musician and well, pretty much awesome guy/teacher.
Wish i could have taken more lesson with my teacher but well, money, time, and no car for a little while screwed it all up for me. Hopefully one day it will happen again, but drive to SF from San Jose just for that on a truck that gets poor gas millage, its pretty hard.
Even few lessons at start will help you. I think position is very important and even though it almost killed me at start i am very happy my teacher forced me to hold the bass right. It's by far more comfortable now, few years after when i am used to the finger positioning.
Other then that dude: scales, a lot of practice and ask questions here, this place is awesome!.
Good luck, welcome to one of the best instruments. :)
Cheers
Dave Grossman 12-04-2006, 04:57 PM Hey guys,
Solo Bass Night II is coming up this Thursday, December 7th in Larkspur, California. I hope some of you guys can make it.
Check out http://www.solobassnight.com/ for more info.
Solo Bass Night III is in the works for May. Maybe we can do a GTG for that one.

kserg 12-04-2006, 07:30 PM It looks like I'll be there.
You guys be needing any help btw?

Thanks man. I think we're cool. Mark Wright from Accugroove will be supplying the amplification. I suppose he could use a hand but he'll be there early. I'm sure we'll have it under control. Thanks though!
Be sure to introduce yourself. For some reason, I know I'll be picturing Will Ferrell with a cowbell.

Alright, good to hear everything is under control, but if anything, just ask.
I'll be sure to say hi, of course. :)

Got there just in time.
The playing was truly inspiring! Edo Castro, Dave Grossman, Jeff Schmidt and Jean Baudin were the best!
Jean's bass had so many strings, it reminded me of a harp. All had refreshingly good humor.
The Accugroove cabs driven with a Stewart 2.1 amp rocked.
Dave,
Great playing. Loved the Bach on the bass. Couldn't find you after the show. Didn't stay too long (long drive home).
What preamp did they use?
- Jansen
Whappo Grande 12-09-2006, 02:58 AM David & Edo ran mono through my Millennia TD-1 while Jean & Jeff ran stereo through Jeff’s Joe Meek. Both ran through my Stewart 2.1 into two El Whappo cabs.
;)
FretFree 06-11-2007, 03:07 PM Back on topic...
I am still VERY interested in a Nor Cal get together. It sounds like there a several like minded individuals. Anyone willing to host?
Am I beating a dead horse and should just let this go?
Whappo Grande 06-11-2007, 03:13 PM Contact me & let me know what you had in mind & what hosting would entail.
pierce 06-12-2007, 11:45 AM i also wouldn't mind doing a get together. it seems that the problem has been competing schedules, and geographic preferences.
personally, i would go any where in the bay area, but prefer places i can get to by bart or cal train. (although driving on the weekend is not out of the question)
i dont have the room to host, but i do know a place in san francisco we could rent for ~$65/3.5 hours. there is a 20 person limit, but it has a stage, and plenty of room for equipment, and we can play as loud as we want. parking is not ideal, however. i know this is not a great option, but it is an option none-the-less.
Wally Malone 06-12-2007, 12:21 PM I'm interested. I'll be out of town (Las Vegas) and most likely will not be checking TB until the 22nd.
Wally
Dave Grossman 06-12-2007, 12:43 PM I've thought about getting us this venue in Oakland:
http://www.21grand.org/
It would cost $200 to get the place for a Saturday but it's huge, I know the owners (kinda) and we can do practically anything we want (order pizza, beer, etc).
I'd be willing to cover the cost and try to recover some of it with donations from the participants.
The idea would be to make it a GTG and a kinda solo bass thing where anyone who wanted could get on stage and play some solo stuff and we could perhaps have some more organized performances in the evening and multi-bassist jams.
Just some thoughts I was kicking around.

smperry 06-13-2007, 06:28 PM pierce, were you talking about Lennon Studios? Secret Studios also has/had a space that might work.
I'm finally finished with grad school so my schedule has opened up. I'd be happy to do any arranging/emailing that would help and I could chip in money for a venue too.
OK, Let's talk dates. How about a Saturday in July?
Marshall
SundanceChile 06-13-2007, 06:34 PM I'm interested, however depending on the commute to where ever the location shall be is the only thing that has me pending.

yes, i was referring to lennon, to the showcase room in specific. i didnt realize that secret had a room also (refresh my memory, is secret the other one in soma, or the one off of ceasar chavez in bayshore?)

Secret is the one off Chavez. Haven't played there in a few years so the room/stage might've changed. No better than Lennon, although there's more street parking...nothing around it though. I have a couple of additional ideas that I can look into as well.
21 Grand sounds like a good idea too.
Wouldn't mind playing through some Accugrooves again either. :)
