Hey all.

I have a GL sig Jazz, and have the standard single coil hum, made all the more annoying by the fact my band practice space has dimmer lights, a computer screen constantly running and a tv on occasionally, which all adds up to a bass that hums like a mofo whenever I turn the tone knob towards the treble-y end, and whenever I turn the volume down on one pickup. I also get a little click when I touch the control panel.

But if I put a metal strip touching both the control panel and the bridge the hum almost totally stops.

My question is, can I solve this simply by buying Dimarzio Model J pickups (hum cancelling) or do I have a grounding problem too?

well, open it up and check all of your wiring, make sure nothings disconnected etc. also, referance the diagram for your bass on fenders website. if you like your current sound you can install shielding which will reduce but not eliminate hum, or you could buy hum cancelling pickups.

If the hum gets quieter when you put a metal strip touching both the control panel and the bridge, it sounds like your "string ground" is nor connected well. When you pull off the control plate, look for a wire that is connected probably to the back of a volume pot and goes through a hole towards the bridge. Based on your description, this would be the first place I would check for a problem.
