This one is yours, isn't it?
:D
:hiding:
...that didn't take long, did it???
:smug:
If it is, I'm happy for you, dood!
:)
Yeah, it's gonna be mine...sometime...it'll be one that gets worked on slowly though, so I'm not getting too excited just yet.
Man, it didn't take 60 seconds for someone to nail down that was mine! :hmm:
:D
Joel B 08-30-2006, 11:32 AM Gard, have you considered putting stainless hardware on it?
I know it may sound goofy, but when I saw that blonde with stainless at bunnybass, it really tweaked my googely button.
Speaking of buttons, I think it is so cool that this bass has a belly button on the back. Did you put that there to use as an alignement guide?:D

Joel, I just can't "do" chrome hardware, never have been a fan of it or gold. It looks OK, but it shows everything that happens to it, plus it's "blingy" and I'm just NOT a "blingy" kind of guy....
The belly button is a lucky coincidence, I'll have to remember to check to see if it does actually line up with my belly button! :D
Joel B 08-30-2006, 11:47 AM I hear ya on the bling bling. But this one had brushed stainless, and I thought that it was much more subtle.
I keep pictureing a blueburst the color of the one you posted yesterday with brushed stainless hardware.
My wife said I couldn't order another bass untill I get the one I have ordered.:bawl: :bawl: :rollno:

As soon as it's done, I'll post a pic of mine (currently in progress) for you. The one you're referring to was originally going to be mine, but due to extenuating circumstances is now on the open market. :ninja:
Here are some shots of the one that is now mine in progress. the burst is top-only; the ash back will be grain-enhanced/clearcoated, and it will have nordie dual-coils and chrome hardware.
i've never thought chrome was too "bling-bling", although I've seen some gold that was. on the other hand, my pedulla hexabuzz has gold but it's against a light gold quilted maple, so it doesn't jump at you, and makes a nice contrast with the ebony board.
i liken what happens with the chrome to what happen with brass instruments; once you've played them for a while and they're broken in, they look kind of cool.
i never trusted a player whose trumpet or sax was Showroom Perfect Shiny. ;)
klorence 08-30-2006, 01:14 PM once more, with color!
klorence 08-30-2006, 01:15 PM p.s. sorry if this is a hijack Gard - feel free to move/delete if you wish...
Joel, I just can't "do" chrome hardware,
once you go black, you ain't ever going back...
Joel B 08-30-2006, 01:45 PM Thanks KLorence, I would love to see it.
T. B. Player 09-17-2006, 10:07 PM once more, with color!
K!!
Is this a blueburst top with a natural back? And the maple FB is just so right! If so (and even if it isn't), I hope you'd be willing to let me see it in person - another SYMS parking lot meeting? I was on the verge of ordering a Century VI back in the spring with the 19mm string spacing, but in a 34 scale. Didn't happen - but the whenever I can do a fretless, it'll be one of these.
Since this is Gard's thread - here's a question for Gard: Have you ever made a fretless with a maple FB? Or is the wood too soft? I thought I had seen Jomez with a fretless LG3005 that had a natural finish and a maple unlined FB...
Thanks!!!

Z -
We can do a fretless DIAMONDWOOD bird's eye maple fingerboard, regular maple will be ok, but you'd have to put so much epoxy on it it would be an epoxy board! ;) We just aren't set up to do that and do it well on our stuff, and don't see a need to get that way, as diamondwood does the same thing tonally (well, IMO better) without all the hassle and mess, and it's easier to maintain (never needs refinishing - just relevel and buff, all done!). Besides, the diamondwood is pretty cool (see the photo just above and to the left for an example  ).
wolfbass1025 09-18-2006, 06:14 AM I love that birdseye diamondwood!! Diamondwood in general for a fretless is so good...

Hey T.B.
Yep, blueburst w/a natural back. They're going to do that grain-enhancing thing on the back as well.
It should be here w/in a week, although I'm taking that with a grain of salt... :ninja: What say you, Gard? ;)
I'm sure at some point we could arrange a visual. But unlike at our last meeting, you won't be going home with any of my gear! :D (hope that amp's been working out for you, BTW)
One of my bands recently completed our CD, and we're kicking around possible dates for a CD-release or even just a regular gig... (we're mostly basement-bound; gigs with this project are few & far between :( ) Hopefully I'll have this bass in my "oh-so-patient-that-i've-ground-my-teeth-down-to-little-knubs" hands by the time we actually book something. When we do, I'll PM you. In the meantime, check out jacktomyfriends.com (http://www.jacktomyfriends.com) for samples if you care to.
Back to the bass - it will be birdseye maple, but fretted.
I've not had any experience with diamondwood, but on paper it sounds like that's what you want for electric fretless. I think plain (unfinished) ebony would wear faster, collect more grime, etc. My Pedulla has that epoxy stuff over ebony; it's
been problem free, and if you've ever played a fretless pedulla you'd know that it works. I think diamondwood would give the same net effect, with the benefits Gard's mentioned.

Yes, your bass should be hitting the bricks at the end of this week!!! :hyper:
There is only one possible delay, and it won't be us this time!!!! (Still waiting for pickup covers)
Your body is done, will have the final clear on it today, your neck is already shaped and just needs another round of sanding before it's finish time!
:)
Yes, your bass should be hitting the bricks at the end of this week!!! :hyper:
;):smug:
Let me vouch for a Roscoe hitting bricks, a wall, the floor or whatever... My stand was broken and I didn't know it... I put it on the stand and my bass fell at a gig... I freaked, picked it up y nada - NOT A SCRATCH!!! Damn things are built for combat!!!! :D
Basso Gruvitas 09-18-2006, 12:55 PM Yo Gard,
Enjoy that thing, man! It should be a slammin' bass!
FWIW, I'm really digging the Aguilar 3-band. You may want to consider that...maybe the Audere if that works in a Roscoe.
T. B. Player 09-18-2006, 07:28 PM Thanks for the great info -
Diamondwood will be the definite fingerboard. Thanks for the link, K, too. Amp is good...although I'm using it more for guitar. I resurrected the Polytone mini-brute III for bass needs. Speaking of resurrections, anything happening with the Penguins this year?
Z
Well, here is a perfect example of the abuse of power...
...front and back, the body is completed, just awaiting hardware and electronics, which will be a while yet, as I'm doing something.....interesting.....in collaboration with the Nordstrand folks (...if Carey can figger how to make it work, that is)...preamp has changed from Demeter to Aguilar OBP-3 for this one, and that is a solid change...also, the neck became a wenge wedge, I just looked at one next to the body and HAD to do it....speaking of the neck, this one is going faster than planned, it will be cut to the shape of a neck today! However, due to scheduling constraints, and waiting on the "something special" from Carey & Company, it won't be done right away...maybe my birthday present this year...
...OK, OK, OK...enough rambling on, here's the pics:

Very nice! It's got that F Bass vibe only much cooler!;)
That longer top horn really looks good. I wonder..........:hmm: nah! Spending too much already!:D
wolfbass1025 10-27-2006, 03:11 PM Gard, that sucker is moving along nicely, I can't wait to see it in person next week.
speaking of next week, do you have any tantalizing eye candy for me yet?????
Basso Gruvitas 10-27-2006, 03:51 PM Yo Gard,
You will love it man! The Nordstrand/Aguilar combo is a great match.
And the secret from Nordstrand? Well, I guess we'll just have to keep it "under cover".:ninja:
Joe -
Yeah, but y'know I really dig the F Bass stuff, so I'm not gonna say it's "cooler", just more "Roscoe-fied".
;)
Jake -
We'll have some photos for you to drool over early next week, the body is ready for final buffing.
John -
Hmm...matching whats?

OK, here's the neck roughed out, front and back (and it won't be my birthday present this year! :bawl: ):
JOME77 02-05-2007, 06:33 PM This Thread has somehow slipped under radar........:hmm:

Gard,
What's the status of this bad boy?:hyper:
I know that you were waiting for some pickup covers but it should be getting very close now......
Joe -
Hey...gotta box from ya today, we'll be on it right away.
:)
...as for my baby, well, the onlyest thing we're waitin' on now is my pickups. Since I've already shown the finished product for the body, here's the neck & headstock - matching natural satin ash headstock, African tulipwood with sapwood fingerboard, no inlay at the 12th fret, and wenge wedge neck with chechen stringers.
Headstock and full view of front:
Here's a different angle on the fingerboard, and one of the back of the neck:
Basso Gruvitas 02-06-2007, 11:50 AM Smokin'!!
So when do you get the pickups Gard? I'm sure Carey's not doing anything important right now......

bassthumpa 02-06-2007, 11:50 AM Noice!
Joel B 02-06-2007, 02:19 PM :D The Wenge wedge neck is the finest neck I have ever played. I LOOOOVEEEE mine.
Jeff Moote 02-06-2007, 02:29 PM Here's a different angle on the fingerboard, and one of the back of the neck:
Those look amazing - I can't wait to see the finished product :)

Man that is going to be an awesome looking bass. I love the sapwood in African tulipwood fingerboard. I've certainly been very happy with the African tulipwood on my spalted 3005. It really added some nice snap to the Spanish cedar body and it's been extremely stable too. I haven't had to adjust the truss rod on that bass since the initial setup when it arrived a year and a half ago.
I'm very curious to hear your feedback on the special order Nordstrand p/u's. They will look so good with the wood covers!
wolfbass1025 02-06-2007, 07:03 PM Dang that looks nice
Can't wait to see this one done!! I think it's definitely gonna be a slap monster!!!
bassjigga 02-07-2007, 04:12 PM I figured out the secret! :hiding:
I figured out the secret! :hiding:
...what secret is that????
:hiding:
Basso Gruvitas 02-07-2007, 05:21 PM I think he read the older post about you getting pickup covers. That's a guess though.
bassjigga 02-07-2007, 06:13 PM Oh the secret is already out? Darn I must have missed that one. Haha.
Munjibunga 02-08-2007, 01:02 AM Joel, I just can't "do" chrome hardware, never have been a fan of it or gold. It looks OK, but it shows everything that happens to it, plus it's "blingy" and I'm just NOT a "blingy" kind of guy....

A bass like that screams for gold hardware, and you know it.
...I gotta box from Yucipa this morning!!!
:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:
:bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:
We're going to epoxy the covers, so they'll darken up just a bit and get a bit glossier to match the fingerboard...it MAY be done today!
I'm so damn psyched!!!!
:D
Basso Gruvitas 02-21-2007, 09:24 AM Dang Gard!!
That is one killer looking bass! The covers and fingerboard look great together.
Let us know how the fat stacks vary from the duals.
You should be about......"two weeks" from having this thing ready!;)
DrMWP 02-21-2007, 10:02 AM That looks great!!!!
Basso is right, looks like its in "TWO MORE WEEKS" stage. :hiding:
That looks great!!!!

:spit:
...actually, if you look closely, you'll notice that the neck is fretted and has the nut installed and slotted; the body has the bridge marked and ready for installation, the holes are drilled for the strapbuttons, and the shielding has already been done in the control cavity.
Before anyone cries "FOUL!", the bass has been at this stage for over a month, torturing and teasing me, sitting on the shelf in plain view as I have waited on the pickups to arrive!
Let's say this: I'll be playing it this weekend!
:bassist:
Carey 02-21-2007, 11:34 AM "torturing and teasing" - I love it when a plan comes together... :hiding:
Just kidding. Sorry to make you wait so long Gard. It's just that you always have to have everything "special" and that takes time... ;)
...grumblegrumblegrumble....evilbastrich....grumbl egrumblegrumble...
...special, yeah, that's me...short bus, crash helmet special...
Seriously, Carey, these are just killin'! I'm really looking forward to getting everything put together and giving 'em a spin! :hyper:
emjazz 02-21-2007, 01:52 PM wow Gard.....really. That's such a great looking bass. You really have to find a way to get us sound clips of some of these basses.
Jeff Moote 02-21-2007, 02:42 PM Aside from the obvious "that looks great" or "I bet you can't wait" comments, I have to ask: are the pickups rotated slightly like on an LG or is that just your photography skills at work? They don't look parallel to the end of the fingerboard.
JOME77 02-21-2007, 02:44 PM ...I gotta box from Yucipa this morning!!!
:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:
:bassist: :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:
Wow! Looks great!
The pickup covers really provide a nice contrast to the ash body and look GREAT with the African tulipwood FB!
em, it's a combination of being lazy and just being overwhelmed by the options and variables (what did I record it with? how was it EQ'd? how was it mixed? what were the monitor speakers? what compression [data] format did I use? what is the end user listening to it with?) that makes me say I'll most likely never put clips up online....thanks for the comments on the bass' appearance, it turned out much better than I thought it would! :hyper:
Jeff, they're straight, standard Century pickup location and angle. I was photographing from an odd angle because none of it was actually assembled, the parts were just lying together on a workbench.
Joe, man...you KNOW what the African Tulipwood will do...
:smug:
...this bass should sound AMAZING.

Of course, anything that spends any time at all in the shop gets a nice layer of dust on it. It's all part of the Roscoe magic. In fact, you could call the shop the "Roscoe dojo of mojo". I saw it when I was there recently. It has some sweet Nordstrand fat stacks in it, but alas, no strings. Gard, you must feel like Tantalus with that beauty sitting within arms reach but incomplete.:help:
I hope the fat stacks weren't supposed to be a surprise.:hiding:
...guess what got a set of DR Black Beauties on it this evening???

Here's the quick & dirty report:
This bass KILLS! :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:
Really nasty, growly, gritty, in your face, snarly, aggressive, mean...just exactly what I wanted!
:)
It hasn't been officially set up (i.e., Keith hasn't touched it since he bolted the neck on the body), but it plays wonderfully, and I know I can get it even better - but again, I'm too busy playing it and grinning from ear to ear!
:D
Peter Parker 05-02-2007, 05:09 PM I have played this bass. It sounds great. Really ballsy, great growl, and the top end is still sweet. Eventhough it hasn't been set-up, it plays very easy. It looks great as well, the fretboard and pup covers contrast nicely with the ash body.
I promise to try and post some photos of it tomorrow!
:ninja:
(...if I can stop playing it long enough to take a few...:D )

So hows the slap tone on that sucker?

I am really enjoying my Ash/Maple skb with the Aggie in it - my Fave Roscoe so far:D I cannot wait to put the Nordys in it for some extra grind in the sound.
You must be lovin' your new bass:hyper:

Yes, that next round of G-boro brews is definitely on me. Hopefully that will be sooner than later.
I really want to see some pics soon. Gard, you may have perfected the art of keeping people on the line wanting more:)
Does this one have 19mm spacing too?
OK OK, just so Jake will stop whining....here are some shots I took today (Jake, yes, it has 19mm spacing).
The sun god was not cooperating, so I took them inside, and they're not the best I've done. Once we get some nice weather, I'll try to get better shots.
Anyhow, here we got, full monty, front & back:
Body shots, front and back (sorry about the "Bobbit-job" on the upper horn in the front shot.... ):
And a couple shots of the neck/fingerboard/headstock, front & back:
maurilio 05-03-2007, 04:29 PM  holy moly crap! ..........sorry!
You, You, You............ damn! :hyper:

DrMWP 05-03-2007, 04:36 PM Very Nice!!!!!!!
poptart 05-03-2007, 04:44 PM Brilliant - it is a stealth Roscoe; no signature, no 12th fret marker. Very sleek looking, you have an amazing pair Gard well worth the wait:D

xkimsungminx 05-03-2007, 05:08 PM wow alright... that looks real nice!! :)
JOME77 05-03-2007, 05:18 PM Cool!
The Arican tulipwood p/u covers look s-o-o-o-o-o awesome with the FB!
If the AT on my spalted topped 3005 is any indication of the stiffness of that wood then they should make bridges out of it!;)
Thanks guys! :)
I have to say that it actually ended up BETTER than I'd imagined.
I have to give all credit to the guys that did the work, all I did was pick the specs!
...well, I did pick out the body from a huge stack of ash. Very scientific, that was! ;)
We do everything in pairs, we need two of each body to do our carving process. One morning, we were getting ready to do a run of Century Signature bodies, we had three VI's - one too many or one too few. So, just Tony and I in the shop, we think on it, maybe leave one of the Cen Sigs back...and I think, heck, I've already spec'd my bass, it's gonna be a solid swamp ash body....so, Tony and I find a board of swamp ash wide enough to do a one-piece, pick one end of it, cut it to the correct length for the Cen Sig body, and he puts it in the batch to make an even four VI's.
That's literally how this body got picked!
Brilliant - it is a stealth Roscoe; no signature, no 12th fret marker. Very sleek looking, you have an amazing pair Gard well worth the wait:D
Yeah, I was going for "understated, yet obnoxious", and I believe we managed to get just that with the combination of the simple natural satin swamp ash body and the ORANGE African tulipwood! ;)
Not only no signature on the headstock (Keith was going to "hand sign" the front of the headstock, we both forgot about it until today! ;) ), no 12th fret marker, but also, NO SERIAL NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE HEADSTOCK! (we forgot that too...ha!)
However before anyone gets any nefarious ideas - the serial number is on the heel of the neck and in the neck pocket (and is on every bass made in the past two years, along with other production information).
:spit:
:D
AK Rev 05-03-2007, 05:51 PM I have no idea what has been posted the hundred times before the photos were put up...but man, that's a really cool bass...very stealthy...it might be a bass or it might be your neighbor's coffee table. Like the commercial says...it's the ninja fruit. :ninja:
It's not done yet...send it back. Looks like Keith forgot to paint it. :D
Very nice. :smug:
Jeff Moote 05-03-2007, 09:17 PM Well that thing looks like fun :p :D :hyper:
Even with the low profile look overall, I'd get Keith to sign the headstock - but that's not my call I suppose

C'mon man! Aren't we all your Roscoe brothers? Your Roscoe disciples?
Yeeeeah, thats what Im talkin about!
I love those pickup covers. Cant wait to see it next week. :)
fishdds 05-03-2007, 10:30 PM Gard,
I know you don't like chrome hardware, but I think it would look nice on this bass. (but the black looks better with the black beauties) I was just picturing how a chrome bridge would look, especially since the pickup covers aren't black.
It's all good, though. I really like the satin finish on the ash. Hey, ya'll ever do one with a gloss finish top and a satin finish back? Hmmmm.....

Jay inquires about the completion of some of his bases.......Gard replies: "not yet Jay, just two more weeks!:p "

OK, coming up on 6 months with this bass, had some time to live with it, and gig with it as well, so here's an updated review:
It kills EVERYTHING I've ever owned, with the exception of my fretless, which it just maims.
:D
This is by far, the most comfortable bass I've ever gigged on, it's light, and balances on a strap perfectly.
Tonally, it is just a beast, everything from P-bass thump to J-bass snarl plus a few others. It is pretty much able to cover any tone I want or need, with the exception of the fretless stuff (which it's fretless brother handles with great ease). On stage, in the mix, it never gets swallowed up, but sits in a nice place that is very audible without drawing undue attention (unless you want it to! ;) ). Slap tone is excellent, fingerstyle tone is perfect.
Keith has still never set it up, I've just doodled with it now and then and it's pretty much perfect at this point, and is stable as Gibraltar, never moves unless I tell it to.
I can honestly say that this is the best instrument I've ever owned, and probably the best bass I've ever played.
poptart 10-24-2007, 03:42 PM NICE - yep it sounds like a winner to me:hyper:
GRoberts 10-24-2007, 04:34 PM Think we'll see more Roscoe's with Nordstrand Fat Stacks? Everyone jumped on the Dual coil bandwagon, but man, those Fat Stacks probably have more 'attitude!' Don't they?
allenhumble 10-24-2007, 04:46 PM That is real sweet Gard.

...hmmm... seems to me you recommended something pretty similar to me a while back... I'm starting to wonder why... :ninja:
but dude, that sounds awesome. I'm happy you got such an awesome instrument!
I do have to say though, I've never been as happy with my gear as I am right now. My LG3005 is perfect, and my GenzBenz rig is everything I want out of an amp. Of course I'm sure the Roscoe would make any amp sound like a dream :bassist:

We're not planning on offering them as an option at this point. However, they are pretty much a "drop it in" replacement pickup, you can even order the spacing correct from Nordstrand.....
....they do have a bit more "attitude" than the DC's I've got in my fretless, but the DC's can get pretty grindy too, if you push 'em....
