I hope I'm not an idiot here, but isn't No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom album ska? If it is, then you should just pick up that whole cd cuz it's pretty awesome. It's like one of those cd's that you must have in your collection. But I believe it is ska. So just pick that cd up and listen to it. It's a good buy and you should find some ska songs on there. The bass lines are pretty sweet too! :)

Do you want more the ska/core or ska/punk kinda stuff? If so, everything mentioned so far is great! Reel Big Fish, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Skankin Pickle, Catch 22, Five Iron Frenzy, Dance Hall Crashers, MU330, LESS THAN JAKE, etc...
My personal faves will always be Less Than Jake and Skankin Pickle.
If you want some of the older stuff, check out The Selecter or Judge Dread. I really love Judge Dread's stuff! GREAT sense of humor!

I see you're from Ft. Walton Beach...have you ever checked out some of the Pensacola or Mobile bands? One of my bands was doing the best ska thing on the gulf coast, but "times they are a-changin'." :(

called..."Intensified!" Original Ska from 1962-1966.

It's almost all horns. With songs like:

"Teenage Ska"
"Rocket Ship"
"University Goes Ska"
"James Bond"
"The Higher the Monkey Climbs"

If you are a fan of Ska. Get this record! It is so rustic and fun. Well played, but not perfect.

It's on Island Records, and here's a pic of the album cover.

some excellent song choices!

however, one idea of ska (on this and other threads i've seen) that i have an issue with is the idea that horns must be in ska music... this i just don't believe. i think a fiddle or even a piano or (god fobid) a synthesizer could be played for the lead and it wouldn't make a difference as long as the bass, guitar and drums maintain the cool ska tempo and rythm of the song...this is why (for me) Prince Buster AND Sublime AND Madness AND the Skatalites AND the Uprights can all fall under the Ska heading...

My favorite ska album is the Planet Smashers' self titled record. All great songs but favorite tracks would have to be Mission Aborted, Janice, Pierce Me, and Pee in the Elevator. The Fury of and Return of the Aquabats! are also very good.

Some others (some ska debatable but worth a listen)
Big D & the Kids Table - Wailing Paddle
You Lose, You're Crazy
Flashlight
Pepper - Too Much
Back Home
The Specials - Too Much Too Young
Little Bitch
Zox - Thirsty

I don't like labeling music either but from a historic perspective you have first wave ska (skatallites, prince buster, etc), 2-tone or second wave (specials, madness, etc), and third wave (sublime, no doubt, etc) ska. I'm hoping this music makes a comeback, not just because I play in a ska/rocksteady/reggae band but because it's just great music and, yes, quite fun to play.... Alot of good recs here but there are also some great unknown 'current' bands out there now. check out:

King Django (NY/NJ area)
Aggrolites (NYC)
Slackers (NYC)
New York Ska and Jazz Ensemble
Ruder than You (Philly)

Likewise. I played in a good ska band back in the 90's and we opened for some pretty big acts - including the Skatellites.

The hard part is that when you say ska, it means anything from the Skatellites to the various punk ska bands (many of which barely play any ska grooves). Taste can vary widely.

If you dig the Skatellites, check out the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble.

I also love Bim Skala Bim for something more pop-influenced while still being ska. "Run Joe" and "Good Dog Ska" are great tunes.
