Larry99 12-17-2008, 09:09 AM I don't like labeling music either but from a historic perspective you have first wave ska (skatallites, prince buster, etc), 2-tone or second wave (specials, madness, etc), and third wave (sublime, no doubt, etc) ska. I'm hoping this music makes a comeback, not just because I play in a ska/rocksteady/reggae band but because it's just great music and, yes, quite fun to play.... I played in a good ska band back in the 90's and we opened for some pretty big acts - including the Skatellites. The hard part is that when you say ska, it means anything from the Skatellites to the various punk ska bands (many of which barely play any ska grooves). Taste can vary widely. If you dig the Skatellites, check out the New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble. I also love Bim Skala Bim for something more pop-influenced while still being ska. "Run Joe" and "Good Dog Ska" are great tunes. tbone409 12-17-2008, 06:09 PM im personally a big fan of Streetlight Manifesto, Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish favorite ska song ever is "Walking Away" by Streetlight/Catch 22 (great bassline btw) but a band that i don't think has been mentioned in this thread is Gold Finger who are a really tight group local ska group (check out "crazy 8's" http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=13902496 Swin 12-17-2008, 06:12 PM Down In Flames - Reel Big Fish House Of Fun - Madness Here In Your Bedroom - Goldfinger Disraeli Gears 12-17-2008, 06:47 PM im personally a big fan of Streetlight Manifesto, Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish favorite ska song ever is "Walking Away" by Streetlight/Catch 22 (great bassline btw) but a band that i don't think has been mentioned in this thread is Gold Finger who are a really tight group local ska group (check out "crazy 8's" http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=13902496 Walking Away is definitely one of my favorite basslines out there sonic assassin 12-17-2008, 11:19 PM Walking Away is definitely one of my favorite basslines out there i do love that line, but my laptop speakers top out at like 200hz so i can never really hear it. :( quadrogong 12-18-2008, 12:34 PM "Gangsters" the specials Jeff Martinez 12-18-2008, 12:37 PM Right now, I'm totally stuck on "the Bumblebee Tuna Song" by Mephiskapheles.
