(although i'm not a rush fan) lump 04-05-2000, 10:43 AM "Working Man" (I am a Rush fan). Player 04-05-2000, 11:58 AM Lump, I don't know, that solo section may be a challenge. I would say "In the End" from Fly by Night or "Take a Friend" from the first album. ------------------ Paul Doug 04-05-2000, 02:36 PM One of my first songs I ever learned on bass was Vital Signs from Moving Pictures. There's alot of movement which is not all that difficult to figure out or play. However, it's a fun tune to play and you can impress your friends by saying that you know how to play a Rush tune off that album. Of course after you play it for them, they'll want you to play YYZ. Have fun!!! http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/biggrin.gif dryan 04-05-2000, 11:22 PM far and away the easiest is Tom Sawyer. Blackbird 04-15-2000, 09:46 PM The basic bassline from "Roll the Bones" is also pretty easy. Will C. http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/cool.gif in_exile 04-26-2000, 08:30 AM They are ling to you. Easiest is "Red Sector A". But it's not the coolest song to play. zilla04 04-26-2000, 08:42 AM All right then in_exile, what's the coolest song to play? ------------------ "If it's to loud, your to old!" Bassmonster 04-26-2000, 01:39 PM Tom Sawyer is the easiest Rush song I know. Most Rush songs just follow the guitar and then put a little twist in them. Dave Siff 04-26-2000, 01:40 PM 'Scuse me? Most Rush songs "just follow the guitar?" Player 04-26-2000, 01:44 PM The coolest? "La Villa Strangiato" Damn Dave, you beat me to it. Bassmonster don't know Rush http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/wink.gif ------------------ Paul Dave Siff 04-26-2000, 01:48 PM Ahhhh.. "La Villa Strangiato".. it still escapes me to this day. When I nail that one I'll retire. My favorite is still "Red Barchetta" but that's probably because I can play it. Also, "Lessons" from side two of 2112 and "Circumstances" from Hemispheres. Player 04-26-2000, 02:12 PM Yes, great tunes! I love playing "Circumstances" How about "Free Will" or "Digital Man" ------------------ Paul Dave Siff 04-26-2000, 02:14 PM Player, more good ones!! I can play "Free Will". I should really sit down with "Digital Man" too, what a killer line. How 'bout "Turn the Page", or "Anthem"? We could go on all day with this! http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/cool.gif RAM 05-26-2000, 03:44 PM Here's an interesting one...Big Money. Fairly decent song, but a really interesting bass line. It took me years to understand exactly what he did in the verse with the right hand. Now, piece of cake. Interesting, nonetheless... Also really like a lot of the newer stuff (many may feel I'm alone on this), but the last two albums really rock! Especially Counterparts...they're mostly tuned normal EADG, unlike T4E, so I don't have to mess around. They're so syncopated and the groove is so fun, that I almost forget that my left hand doesn't have to do as much work as when I play older stuff! I guess I just like the groove in newer Rush... RAM 05-26-2000, 03:46 PM Oh...I almost forgot to mention Hemispheres...Still my ALL TIME FAVORITE song by ANYONE to play!!! funkastorious 05-27-2000, 04:42 PM Oh yes, nice to see Rush fans! Still can't believe they haven't made the RR hall of fame yet. What's the deal??? Easiest, by far, is "Half the World"....great song as well. Personal Favs to play are "Lakeside Park", "Red Barchetta", "Closer to the Heart-live version". kent embellisher 05-28-2000, 10:38 PM <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>Originally posted by RAM: Also really like a lot of the newer stuff (many may feel I'm alone on this), but the last two albums really rock! The time signature changes might seem imposing to some, but I'm terrible and can still play them. The main lines to Subdivisions consist of G, A, and B, and the only real challenge is the two fills, but even those are relatively simple and fun to play. The bass guitar is only played during the chorus and solo, but the synth bass during the verses can easily be played without any problems on bass guitar. ------------------ "We told you before, but you didn't hear us then. So, you still question why! You didn't listen again!" -Rush Bassmonster 05-31-2000, 02:26 PM It's been awhile since I've checked this thread, so it might be too late to defend myself. I made a mistake, I read an interview where Geddy Lee said that. I thought he meant he did that for all his songs. Turns out, he was just talking about Tom Sawyer, my bad http://www.talkbass.com/ubb/frown.gif ------------------ I'm the Bassmonster....ROWWAAARRRR!!!! Dave Siff 05-31-2000, 02:34 PM It's not too late man! It's all good. I just got my Rush classic bass Anthology book, can't wait to dig into it! Dave Siff 06-01-2000, 09:19 AM Hey if I can venture slightly off-topic, what does everyone think of that album "Victor" that Alex Lifeson did a few years ago? I think it's possibly one of the best records I've ever heard. The bass playing is mostly by Alex and it's tremendous. Les Claypool guested on one cut I think. RAM 06-04-2000, 02:50 AM I'm a bit surprised that noone mentioned "Passage to Bankok" as the easiest to play. There are others, but there's no way my memory could serve me enough to remember them. But, "Passage" is possibly the easiest. Oh...and, if you listen to "Red Sector A", there is NO bass guitar...something Rush was guilty of a lot during the Grace/Hold Your Fire period...Also, if you did try to play the keyboard on "Red Sector A", good luck playing straight 16th notes for 4-5 minutes. Nearly impossible, except for that self-praising moron known as Michael Anthony!!! zilla04 07-07-2000, 12:42 AM I have found the answer, "bravado" from "Roll the Bones". I've only been playin bass for 6 months and I got most of the song on my own. It's not the coolest but it is the ez-est. Rushfan 07-07-2000, 01:28 PM I'll have to agree with Player and say "In The End" is the easiest. Its kinda hard to say with so many songs to choose from. I always thought that bassline to "Red Lenses" on the Grace Under Pressure cd was pretty cool. It's easy too. Saint 07-18-2000, 03:44 PM Have to go with Tom Sawyer. Dave Siff 07-18-2000, 04:17 PM "Working Man" has got to be the easiest! That whole song is way, way easier to play than the part under the guitar solo in "Tom Sawyer." Superfrappe 07-19-2000, 03:33 PM Hey! Cool thread. I'm gonna say Working Man is the easiest to play. It was the first Rush song I learned, and I still love to play & sing it. My old band used to play Subdivisions. That's an easy one with the 80's sounding synth. Tom Sawyer is also a fun one. La Villa Strangiato and YYZ are two I still cannot fathom... but every year I get a little closer! ------------------ ...Must...Make...Calluses...Harder!!! Geddy1 12-31-2000, 12:33 AM Well looks like there is a topic I can get into After reading all the posts here are my thoughts First of all "Red Sector A" is played entirely on a "Emulator II" set with the arpeggiator at 16th notes You can see it in the "Grace Under Pressure Tour Video" The First song I ever learned was Witch Hunt pretty easy, nice little bass mini solo to "La Villa" is still one of my persoanl Favs I learned it long ago from a "Guitar For The Practising Mag" also her's a great site for Rush Tabs : http://members.tripod.com/~ums1/rush/ gruffpuppy 12-31-2000, 09:37 AM Originally posted by Dave Siff 'Scuse me? Most Rush songs "just follow the guitar?" Oh come on dave maybe the guitar is "just following the bass" Funkster 01-02-2001, 08:10 AM The first RUSH tune I learned thats not to hard was, What your doing off the first album great groove between John Rutsy & Geddy, Still one of my Favs. john turner 01-02-2001, 10:39 AM easiest rush song on bass BY FAR is tears, off of 2112. there's like 4 notes in it. :D sgraham 01-06-2001, 05:33 PM What about "Different Strings"? It's also got those cool open-string plucked harmonics. Quite simple, but very effective. Usul 01-11-2001, 05:50 PM Well, I`m working on Bravado and it is harder than I thought...lots of lil change ups, still a fun song to play though(the parts I can play anyways hehe). gruffpuppy 01-11-2001, 06:09 PM another vote for Subdivisions, i never thought Fly by Night was that easy but i haven't played it in a long time. notduane 01-12-2001, 09:19 PM Another vote from the "old farts" camp http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/cwm/nerd.gif;) Easiest?..."Bastille Day" ( C.O.S. ). There's a real pumpin' version on Different Stages (disc 3). It's got some tasty tweaks. Although my black Chow (Bart) and blonde Chow (Moose) seem to favor "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" :p . "All right London! From Toronto Canada, RUSH !"... http://cdnow.com/cgi-bin/mserver/SID=537212967/pagename=/RP/SHARE/soundclip.html/UPC=7567831222/disc=3/track=1/source=wmf I had the C.O.S. LP (them old vinyl thangs? :D) The jacket was great for cleaning...um...http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/s/cwm/uhoh2.gif...never mind. [Edited by notduane on 01-13-2001 at 09:55 AM] gruffpuppy 01-13-2001, 12:41 AM i don't know why C.O.S. is thought of as a bad album, personally i love it. and i also owned the album before the CD, and notduane i would have to disagree about that cleaning thing, the colors were to close, the wall now that was a great album for cleaning :D zilla04 01-16-2001, 04:01 PM I have took the time to tally these up: Fly by Night 1 Subdivisions 2 Working Man 3 Passage to Bankok 2 In The End 2 Take a Friend 1 Vital Signs 1 Tom Sawyer 3 Roll the Bones 1 Red Sector A 1 Red Barchetta 2 Bastille Day 1 Lessons 1 Circumstances 2 Free Will 2 Digital Man 2 Turn The Page 1 Anthem 1 Big Money 1 Hemispheres 1 Lakeside Park 1 YYZ 1 Bravado 1 Tears 1 Red Lenses 1 Different Strings 1 Witch Hunt 1 By-Tor and The Snow Dog 1 La Villa Strangiato 1 Closer to the Heart(live) 1 The Spirit of Radio 1 What Your Doing 1 and I will add Limelight, I think it a rather easy song except the solo and other parts. By the way I will learn the two highest voted songs Tom Sawyer and Working Man zilla04 01-16-2001, 04:04 PM Dude, I had those all lined up, neat and stuff, man. oddentity 01-17-2001, 09:20 AM Mystic Rhythms is pretty easy- the bass guitar parts are kinda fun and the rest is synth bass. |
