VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Toronto/GTA GTG anyone?
Jeff Moote 09-10-2006, 09:47 PM Over in OT there was a thread about some bass players starting at Humber this fall, and out of that thread was born the idea of a Toronto GTG.
For the folks in school, probably a little bit later in the fall is better, after they've settled in, but I think that planning should probably begin asap. My suggestion is for sometime in late October or early November.
I wouldn't be able to hold it at my place, since I am renting and don't have a lot of space. Ideas for a location are probably a top priority at this point.
Also, if you think you'd be interested, please drop in the thread so we know who is around.
Cheers,
-Jeff
Mark Wilson 09-19-2006, 11:41 PM I've already talked to you on MSN, so you know i'm interested!
I'm pretty sure Aaron Saunders would be up for it too!
-Mark
Jeff Moote 10-04-2006, 09:51 PM I think there is a problem with this new forum not getting a lot of traffic. That, in combination with the fact that there is no history of Toronto GTGs means that many TB'ers from TO (and I know there are lots) are not seeing this.
bassguitar 10-05-2006, 09:49 AM I just saw this and would probably be interested. Can't host it or anything like that though.
thrash_jazz 10-06-2006, 10:07 PM I might be able to make it out if there was enough advance warning :)
Aaron Saunders 10-06-2006, 10:34 PM Mark, yo' damn right I'd be up for it!
We couldn't really host it at Humber (and we're a bit of a transit hop for most people, being in Etobicoke) but I'd definitely go for it.
BassGod 10-08-2006, 09:20 AM I'd go.
Graeme
Jeff Moote 10-08-2006, 11:38 AM That's better.. we've got some interest. Now how about a location?
BassGod 10-08-2006, 11:43 AM Well... there is the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Probably be a little costly. ;) I've never been to one of the GTGs. Are they usually just held at someone's house?

Same here, I have never met anyone on Talkbass in real life, which is too bad, the people on these boards are great!
I'm interested! but can't host, small little townhouse, and elderly neighboors wouldn't appreciate it, lol.
Mark Wilson 10-09-2006, 09:44 PM Aaron,
Do you think there's a place here that could hold it? The Gym or something? Maybe even a room?
Not sure, maybe McClennan, or Downes know a place?
-Mark
DanGouge 10-11-2006, 06:21 PM What about hosting it at a local restaurant or bar for starters. I don't know of any spaces that work otherwise.
Has there ever been a Toronto gtg anyway? I know the idea has come and gone through the ages, but I don't know of one actually happening... Come on Toronto!
Unknowndude 10-11-2006, 07:03 PM I'd be up for it, it would be nice to see some fancy or expensive basses that put my MIM to shame.
I know of a place that could host a small event like this but it's a good hour north of Toronto, probably way too far.

An hour north of Downtown, or an hour north of city limits? Big difference there...
A restaurant/bar is fine, but that's only good for a social event. If we want to check out basses and rigs we need a hall or a big room in somebody's home.
Mark, you might be on to something - look into spaces at Humber.
BassGod 10-11-2006, 09:33 PM Well, we could go to a restaurant like Dan suggested, hang out, etc.
Then hold the actual bass show off/jam thing at any one of these places:

Steve Clark 10-12-2006, 02:17 PM Hi all, I would come to a Toronto GTG and bring a pile of EA stuff to check out. Its too bad London is a bit of a hike because Im sure I could arrange access to the London Music Club in London on a Sunday afternoon. www.londonmusicclub.com
d8g3jdh 10-12-2006, 05:45 PM Of course, wait until I move 1000 miles away before holding the sucker. Thanks. :hmm:
If you can wait until the christmas break i could probably go.

Hah, sorry about that Scott.
Personally, I'd like to see this happen before the middle of december since I'm going home for Christmas then moving back to school.
I do like the idea of renting a hall or something, and I think if everyone split the cost it would be rather small.
Mark Wilson 10-12-2006, 10:55 PM I'm very strapped for cash. I have college, and no job, and presents to buy for Christmas. I owe my family 3 years of presents.
I'll see what I can do though

Don't worry about it Mark. I don't think it's a big deal if not everyone can contribute (those of us working Full time likely have more than enough to cover this sort of thing).
I might be able to go, depend on a lot of things, it's a pretty long drive, but I might be able to go.
DanGouge 10-14-2006, 08:45 AM Okay, what about this? Local semi-reliable sources have pointed out to me the church basement in which some of Rush's early practices took place, what about seeing if we could use that?
(Sorta half-joking, but else do we have for a venue?)
john turner 10-14-2006, 08:50 AM heh. my wife and i will be coming up to toronto to visit some time around then, so i may be able to make this, depending on when it is. we're driving, so i can bring a couple basses too :D
i've met some tb'ers before on my trips to to, we just met in the hotel lobby (i was staying at mariott eaton centre) or at the book store in eaton centre. had my basses in there too. :D
VanillaO 10-15-2006, 01:21 PM I'm new here, but I'm from North York, so I'm right in T. if you guys are having something, it'd be cool to come chill and just watch other people be better at bass than me (not that it's hard to do)

This is no joke.. a Church basement is prime for this sort of event. If you have more info, please share it.

Let us know when you find out the date. A Toronto GTG and JT with his basses, that's just too much!

Hi VanillaO, welcome to TB. I'm living in North York right now; what area are you in?
BassGod 10-16-2006, 09:11 PM Isn't there some community centre in Toronto that could work?
I'm sure the CC in my town would be able to free up a room for something like this. Is Ajax too long of a drive for most people? If not, I'll see what I can do.

Ajax sounds cool, do you mean the big CC where all the judo tournaments are held? I know how to get there!
BassGod 10-16-2006, 09:22 PM Yup, that's the one. I can give 'em a call this week.
Graeme
VanillaO 10-17-2006, 02:10 PM i'm around like bayview and york mills.. 19 and live with my parents still.. lucky me :P
Steve Clark 10-17-2006, 02:52 PM I'll email my brother in law. He lives in the east end and there are some great little local pubs that might work out for us to hold an event.
If it's in november I should be able to go. I might use the train, if it's not in TO any body could give us a lift from Downtown?
Can I bring a bass on a train?

You shouldn't have problems getting a bass on the train. I went to MIAC (in Toronto) a few months ago using the train, and even if I didn't brought my bass, it would have been very easy. Both a hard case or a gig bag would fit easily.
Kosko 10-18-2006, 01:29 PM as a WNY'er this would be the closest one so far. Count me in for now, by that time I could bring a new Stammie :)
Steve Clark 10-19-2006, 12:47 PM A suggestion for a location from my brother-in-law.
http://www.tranzac.org/tranzac_index.html
Central location and close to Subway. Anyone want to follow up with the location?

That looks good. I can call them tomorrow to inquire - I'll report back when and if I do.
basse 10-23-2006, 10:35 AM OK, I'd be in assuming I can work around my 2 kids' schedules...
Anyone consider some of the cooler Queen Street West pubs like the Cadillac Lounge, Mitzi's. etc.? Maybe even the El Mocambo or something like that!

Good to see that your knowledge of basses is only surpassed by your knowledge of good pubs.
Cheers

LOL! Now if only you were here then so that you could bring along some of your basses for everyone to see, hear, play and feel...

Just rub it in that I can't get over to Canada this year.
You know if I could I would be there, maybe next year I will at some point buy you the several pints I owe you.
thrash_jazz 10-26-2006, 06:42 PM Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to make it to anything in TO before the new year :( Things are just a bit too hectic around here right now!
Mark Wilson 10-26-2006, 06:55 PM If we have it as late as mid-december i'm not sure if I can do.
I'm going back home to the falls December 16th. I might be able to come back up though.
-Mark
DanGouge 11-07-2006, 05:58 AM So wait, no TO gtg till the new year?
I haven't in TO for a while, but I wonder if we could do it at clubbass?
I went at the old place, I don't know if the new place would be big enough and if Dave would be interested. Just an Idea

I'm sure either Jeff or I could pitch the idea to him. I'll be picking up a bass soon.
It is a small place though. So I don't know how many people would be able to fit.
bassguitar 11-09-2006, 01:45 PM On a club bass note - I can't wait till he gets his new Lakland shipment in. I'll be first in line!
You're right about it being a bit small, but he may have other location ideas.
thechips 11-11-2006, 10:58 PM I just noticed this thread. I'm in T.O aswell.
(v.near the cadillac lounge/mitzys mentioned earier)
maybe we could track down a drummer who is prepared to accomodate 15 bass players playing at the same time.
*HEY! I just googled that clubbass place. what??? that place is just down the road from me! I've never heard of it!
uh oh. I feel a purchase coming on.
man, look at those basses. I gotta check that place out.

You would never know it was there, just by the look from the street. When you say you're down the street though, this isn't to say that you're in the Queen St. Mental Health Centre, is it? :ninja:

It took me two times trying to find it to actually find it! I can't wait for his next shipment to come in from Lakland.
Jeff Moote 11-29-2006, 07:49 AM Ok, so this idea never really came together. If any of you still want to meet up, Club Bass is having a Christmas bash, or in other words, a busy day at the shop :smug::We're having our client appreciation XMAS party Saturday December 16, 1:00PM - 5:30PM.
I'll be there most of the day likely, so drop by if you'd like. Dave has lots of great gear to move too.. ;)

Hey Jeff:
I'll be there at Club Bass too. In fact, I'm trying to get Dave to come out to a gig we've got on the 15th, the night before at Rancho Relaxo on College St. If he shows I'll try and make sure that he's not too hung over for Saturday!
Shoot me a PM with what time you think you'll be there and I'll bring along the ACG and the Nordstrand. If you include your e-mail I'll add you to our gig list!
Dave
Adrian Juras 11-29-2006, 02:27 PM That sounds cool. Its been a while since I visited Club Bass, which might be a good thing since Dave always has something I need(although I only find that out when I get there;) ). Dave is a great guy and definitely knows his stuff. I want to check out those Bergantino IP's!
Jeff Moote 12-14-2006, 01:47 PM bumping this thread as a reminder that the gathering at Club Bass is this Saturday.
I wouldn't say this is a real TB GTG, but it will be a good day to hang out and meet other bassists. I know I'll be there, since I'm picking up a new bass :)
basse 12-14-2006, 02:09 PM See you there Jeff. I'll be taking the AC Guitars ReCurve into Club Bass to show Dave so that he can hear the pre-amp. And I'll have the Nordstrand in the trunk just in case you want to see it! *smirk*

Glad to hear it. I got the email about your gig, though I don't think I'll be able to make it. I think the ReCurve will attract a fair bit of attention :)
I look forward to meeting you (and your basses :p) on Saturday.
Jeff Moote 12-17-2006, 04:16 PM Well, I guess lots of people missed this thread or were busy on Saturday. The Club Bass gathering was lots of fun - and you all missed some great food and basses :D
It was nice meeting Dave (basse), and his AC Guitars Recurve is really a beautiful instrument. Thanks for bringing it, and comeing to hang out!
There was a wide variety of all organic sandwiches and other goodies, as well as a nice selection of wine, ale, and a wonderful winter punch that Dave (F) prepared. There was no shortage of hospitality all day, as we sat around and enjoyed the food and refreshments.
Of course, the most important reason for me to be there was to pick up my Roscoe. See the link in my sig for more info. Dave really did a great job cleaning it up for me, and with new strings it's set up perfectly.
Other notable pieces of gear: The PJB Bass Buddy - what a cool unit! Classy design, great features and of course it sounds great. It's even got a swanky case to go with it. I tried it going into the Berg IP112 and it was nothing short of fantastic. This was also my first experience with the IP and of course it was awesome. It really does sound different from the passive cabs powered by a head due to the DSP. Very huge, and accurate low end. All in all, I really like the HT/EX stack with my LMII, and it's midrange is a little more accentuated, which I like.
Thanks to Club Bass for a great celebration. There's nothing better than hanging around with a bunch of bassists eating, drinking and trying great gear.
bassguitar 12-17-2006, 06:41 PM I wish I was able to make it, but I just had too much to do on Saturday.
Anybody got any pics?
Jeff Moote 12-17-2006, 06:47 PM Nope, I don't think anyone was taking pictures - not that I noticed.
johnvice 02-23-2007, 09:44 PM I'm in :)
BassGod 02-23-2007, 10:11 PM And not a minute too late. ;)

Jeff Moote 02-27-2007, 04:16 AM Maybe we'll try this again sometime. I'm not living in TO these days, but there's a good chance I will be in the summer, or at least passing through a lot.
Aaron Saunders 04-17-2007, 10:54 AM Snap, I definitely spaced on this one. Anyone else miss it?
Barfly 05-12-2007, 11:25 PM Missed it too.
SUGAR!!!
BassGod 05-13-2007, 12:14 AM So did I. Alright, time to hold another one.
Graeme
Jeff Moote 05-13-2007, 12:33 AM If it's on a weekend I'll do my best to make it out for sure.
Aaron Saunders 05-13-2007, 12:33 AM Proposal...wait till September!
BassGod 05-13-2007, 12:36 AM I'll be downtown whenever that Rush concert is in September. So I could make it out then. Otherwise, I'll be far away at university.
I say the beginning of July.

Great idea. I was in Montreal on the weekend and had a chance to spend time with an AC5 and a fretted 6. Very, very nice.
