Really dig your recommendation of Hanon for working on technique. I was a classically-trained pianist in a former life, so I have fond memories of working through those exercises. Don't miss the forearm cramps, though!

My question is, how should I play these on the bass? Specifically in terms of right-hand fingering and positioning. These exercises are really obvious on the piano, but I see 4 or 5 different ways to lay them out on the bass. Just curious if you had a specific suggestion.

Jono,

nothing specific about transfering them to the bass. In fact the harder it is to transfer it to the bass the better for me. Just in terms of making your fingers do things they probably aren't acustomed to.

You say you see 4 or 5 ways to lay them out on the bass. wicked! use all the different ways you can. The more you know the fingerboard in your subconcious the better. Less time will be spent thinking about where your fingers are meant to be freeing up more time to create music.

Easy,

Janek

I was kinda afraid you'd say that. ;)

After the other thread I picked up a copy of the Hanon book and have been using it. It's really cool!

I've been wanting some reading material for my 5-string and the Hanon gives me that. Plus it is really giving me a workout on the low B and E strings, my hand is letting me know it. I have been playing the patterns in a couple different fingerings so getting good work out.

Also some of the patterns make for cool motif's for bebop if you change the rhythm up a bit.

All this and the book was only $6.00.
