I thought I'd post some pics of my bass thats in the process of becoming real. It looks like its a few weeks away still, but Gard sent me some shots of the body after it was carved, and I've got some shots from when I was at the Roscoe shop picking out woods a while back. Here is the info:

Century Signature 6
Figured bubinga/swamp ash
Wenge Wedge neck
fretless birdseye diamondwood fingerboard
birdseye diamondwood pickup covers and matching pickup ramp
Nordstrand DC's
Audere 4 band pre

and some photos....

I'm really excited about this bass, hopefully it will be the fretless I've been looking for. More photos to come...........

I'm thinking about having the picture of Gard with his Tandoori chicken covered fingers airbrushed on the back.. If we're going to airbrush, we might as well put some unicorns and rainbows on there as well....

How'd you know it was inspired by Gards?.......;)

I'll tell you, I've always been a fan of the bubinga/ash combo, especially for fretless. I'd venture to say that Gards bass was influenced to some degree by a sonus special, which has about the nastiest fretless midrangey bite around.

No matter what, I think its gonna kill. And with maple pickup covers and a matching ramp, will definitely be a distinctive looking roscoe.

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics with some finish on it (hint hint............:) )

Heh, no. When I scrolled down and saw the pics of the neck, my first thought was, that looks like a gas grill its being laid on. But its the tailgate of a truck (I think).

Actually, I'[m starting to think it'll sound pretty different from Gards. IIRC, his ash body is substantially denser, and the wenge on my neck is very different from any wenge I've ever seen. not quite as massive and dense, a little more open and porous, and lighter in color as well. I mean its gotta sound similar, but maybe not as similar as you might think. Time will tell.

Oh happy day! They look awesome BTW, I guess That Carey guy knows what he's doing!!! Is there finish on it or just polished? He mentioned that diamondwood doesn't exactly take finish well, and that because of all the glue in it, you could buff it to a high gloss.

Yup, it was lacking in the midrange in a big way. The new owner loves it though. I've got an older bolt on Smith now. I'd keep this one for a long time if it had the longer upper horn (a problem that I had with the Roscoe SKB body). Anyway, when I get up the cash I just need to have the right bass made for me.

Really looking forward to seeing your new bass when it's finished..

I definitely think it needs the black switches...Im still undecided on the knobs though, I cant tell if it just wouldnt look right to begin with or if its just a crappy PSP job (pretty sure It could equally be either one :smug: ).

I think youre right though...I think that the black knobs keep it balanced well with the black bridge; the birdseye knobs might be too much with the PU covers, ramp, and fretboard. Maybe think about having the knobs match the top...?

Just my opinion but.......I think, lose the ramp, add bubinga tops to the knobs (birdseye maple sides/shafts).

If you really need the ramp at least install it in temporary manner so as to not permanently damage the top.

I agree with this observation...on the other hand, how about a bubinga ramp o match the top? It will most certainly look stunning and adds the comfort of the ramp. As for the knobs Birdseye maple shafts and bubinga tops sounds like a great suggestion with lots of potential to make that already gorgeous bass into something positively unique.

Have you guys played over a radiused ramp before? It's not for eveyone but it can be an extemely beneficial thing to have. My playing is what it is because of having a ramp for a few years.

Edit: as far as how it looks, I've always preferred black pickup covers with a black ebony ramp. It looks really classy and doesn't take away from the astethics. In some cases it even improves upon the look of the instrument.

Well the bass is in my hands!!!!!! Let me just preface my ramblings by saying that I'm pretty exhausted after a 14 hour day, but I wanted to give a quick update for anyone interested.

Consensus- This thing is awesome!!! What an amazingly built, amazing sounding instrument. Gard and the boys really know what time it is over there, and it really shows with this instrument. The playability is insane, and the mwah factor is really very impressive. I have fooled around with it for a few hours, tomorrow night I have a band practice, and a gig on Saturday, so I'll get a chance to take it out and open it up so to speak. All I knoe is that the bubinga ash recipe is just killer for that certain fretless tone. Real burpy, jaco city with a healthy dose of singing clarity!!!!!

The Audere is a very interesting preamp. I had high expectations and I'm very impressed with the way it sounds and the versatility it offers. I think I need to do a little tweaking with it to get it where I want it, specifically in regards to the highs and lows, but the the dual mids are very impressive, and the z switch is quite ingenous. The low and the high eq are a tad limited, and I'm thinking that adjusting the internal trim pots will help dial it in right. Thats one nice thing about the audere is that you can do a fair bit of adjustment to suit your preferences. But really it just comes down to getting used to a new instrument and learning how to make it purr.

All in all, I'm pretty astounded, a Million thanks to Gard, Keith R. and all the boys at Roscoe, David from Audere, and Carey Nordstrand. This is a very unique sounding, unique looking piece and I feel lucky to have it!!

I'll try to get some good pics up in a day or two, the pics from Roscoe are sweet, but you need to see this thing in person to get the full effect, and there aren't any pics with the ramp, which IMO sets the whole thing off so nicely.

I'll try to get some good pics up in a day or two, the pics from Roscoe are sweet, but you need to see this thing in person to get the full effect, and there aren't any pics with the ramp, which IMO sets the whole thing off so nicely.

Cheerio!!;)

I'll be more than happy to pay the shipping costs to Georgia!:D :hiding:

Jake, I'm so happy to hear that you're digging the bass so much. I agree with the Audere comments...for me the eq for the high end and the lows aren't all the way there. It's a personal preference thing. The preamp as a whole though is really quite spectacular. Those two mid bands for fretless must be fantastic. Can't wait to see the pics with the ramp on it. How you liking the ramp?

Man!

What a beautiful top! The finish still looks wet. Those are some of the only pictures that I've seen that show the high quality of Keiths finish work!
Don't get offended Jimmy "Gard" Olsen!:D :p
We still like your pic's......

The pickup covers, ramp and finger board really look great in contrast to the top.

yeah, Keith knows how to lay some finish, thats for sure!!!

I'm going to have them buff out the diamondwood to a gloss almost, it'll help to keep it clean, whereas the satin kinda picks up grime and holds it.

thanks for the comments folks, you guys should hear it!

Somehow I've missed this thread. All I can say is that I just read through all six pages and was looking forward to the next post all the way through. This is one awesome bass. Pretty much all Roscoes are, but holy cow this one is something else!

I've been able to calmly wait for my time for my next Roscoe, but this thread is beginning to create some strong Roscoe gas. I was planning to order a SKB-3005, but maybe a Signature Century V will be in order.

Enjoy it Wolf. Enjoy it.

Jake

I hope you are getting on okay with the Audere - just to let you know it took me a bit of time to get it set up but now it absolutely rocks:hyper:

yeah, there is a learning curve for sure. To be honest, I'd be happy with the Audere without the Z switch, as long as the high and low control did as much to the sound as the 2 mid controls did. They really have some throw!

I'm going to go for a mod I think pretty soon, bump it up from 10 to 15db on the ends. Also, I'm baffled by what my additional switch does. It is supposed to be series/parallel, but it's confusing because it does different things when the preamp is set differently. I wonder if its actually single coil/humbucking.

No matter, it sounds killer flat!!!

Wolf, you are NEVER going to get that bass to sound like you want it to.

Soooo, I was thinkin'........ you should just donate it to me. :D

I am trying to start an orphanage for Roscoes that look like yours.

You can be the first to have a wing named after you. :p

Then, Doc can send in his, and Mo can send his, and all of the new Roscoes will be TOGETHER..

Doesn't that sound like a great idea???? :D :D

It sure does to me. Just let me know, and I will send out a donation form. Even be willing to do the paperwork for you, and pay for shipping.

Just trying to help. :D

Jake, this bass is simply extraordinary!!!! Congratulations.

I think the 15db boost will be a great improvement to the Audere.....I have to personally agree that the Z mode switch just isn't for me. It certainly is a great preamp for what it offers though, which is an aweful lot.

I bet that bass of yours would've been just as incredible passive with two volumes and a tone.

I agree actually that although the z mode is interesting, it does not do a great deal compared to the eq. I am swopping mine for the unit with 15bd as well as I have found the 10bd not quite enough - the 4 band eq is great and offers some incredible tones and the audere is very neutral and clean sounding.

I believe the Roscoe tuned unit will make things easier - although I am not sure how that will work with Barts and Nords as they definitely have different frequency responses - watch this space.

Hey guys-

Just got the bass back with the "new and improved" audere preamp. This one has the 5 additional db on the bass & treble. Definitely makes a big difference, and makes the controls a bit more proportionate in the effect they have. Its my understanding that this is the new stock audere so they should all be like this now, which is a good thing.

Also, I got the fingerboard, pu's and ramp buffed out and they look great. I'll try to get some new pics up sooner than later.

I did some recording (pre-mod) with the roscoe the other day. A buddy came over and wanted to try out his new interface, so I got some free recording time and laid down some improvised solo bass tracks with my echoplex looper. They don't give the "full band" context but its a good representation of the voice of the bass.

The tracks can be found here (http://www.putfile.com/wolf1025)
