Hey Gard, what can you tell me about #3987? It has turned up in a local GC. All I can say is that it is a 5-string LG with a deep red/purple stained top with some sort of maple board (perhaps birdseye). Also, one of the strap pegs (or rather, the insert for one the strap locks) is on the bottom (g-string) side of the bass and not on the horn. It's placed where you would rest the bass on your leg if you were sitting down. Kinda hard to describe. It's as if it were a right-handed model modded to be played left-handed a la Jimmy Haslip, but the controls are still on the normal (g-string) side. There's no strap lock hole where there should be for a normal right-handed model. Also, playing up high, particularly on the A, D and G strings, there's this really odd chorus effect happening. Wasn't the amp because I tried it through multiple amps. Anyway, what can you find out, if anything? Anyone else know anything? They're asking $2500 but it's not really in good enough shape to be asking that much.
Well, unfortunately, that serial number is pretty far back, and isn't in our system now.
:(
It sounds like a righty bass that someone bought and "convered" into a lefty, but there is no way for us to confirm this. It does happen often enough out there though, so it's a reasonable guess.
As for the "chorus" issue on the lower strings up on the higher frets, it is most likely because the neck pickup is too close to the strings, an easy fix.
Sorry for the delay in replying, didn't see this over the weekend, as I wasn't on the computer at all (I sit here all day every day, last thing I wanna do on my days off is sit here some more! :D)

Cool, thanks Gard! Yeah, probably a conversion although there's no hole for where the strap lock should be. That neck pickup thing makes sense. I didn't know having a pickup too close could do that. Perhaps I can get them to come down on the price.
Good luck!
You might want to point out that you can snag a brand-new LG 3005 from either The Perfect Bass (http://www.theperfectbass.com/explore.cfm?STORE=Y&N=104&SN=202&CT=101&PG=101&W=STORE&P=N&S=1001081&U=1&SS=1&CR=N&modify=) or Bass Central (http://www.basscentral.com/2003/roscoe.shtml - scroll down to the 5's and check out the "Satin" basses) for what they're askin' for that used one!
