VIEW FULL LIVE VERSION : Michigan GTG West side??

thehurlatron

I'd like to set up a Michigan GTG on the west side of the state. The only problem is that there are no all bass stores, or regular music stores around here that have squat above combo amps. So for a store to lend a spot is not going to happen.

Any ideas? Rent a place for the afternoon? (my house is too small for a GTG)

i would definately love to attend... but no ideas on where to have it... i do manage a music store, but our "cool bass gear" is a little lacking... and size wise it's pretty small (for a get together anyway) maybe a vfw of something like that would work?

RIT grand rapids is fair, but still only stuff like fender/ampeg/ibanez. RIT Holland is sub-par to say the least.

Hi guys I thought I'd put this here. I'm looking for a teacher in the NW Grand Rapids area. I have one already but he's not wililng to do every other week which is what I want. My influences are about 50% metal 50% hard rock. I want to know theory and we are studying modes right now. I"m primarily a finger player but want to play with a pick too. If anyone is interested please PM me. Thanks. Mike

Hi guys!

I have not been as active with TB over the past year but I check back every so often... mostly to see if the Berg line driver has been released yet!

I live in Grand Rapids and if needed I will do what I can to help organize a West MI GTG. It looks like there are possibly 10+ interested so far- looking too big for me to host at my (small) house. Any progress with locating a space?

this is totally unrelated to the west side of the state.

my band, the low hello (http://www.myspace.com/thelowhello), is playing at club bart tonight in fabulous ferndale. we're playing with oliver future (http://www.myspace.com/oliverfuture) from los angeles, california. the show starts around 10pm. we're opening.

if you're free, come check us out!

i'm almost tempted to have this at my house and throw all the furniture in the kitchen or something... but i think it's still too small...

but after watching the videos of the "Bowlus Borg" I am jonsing to do this.

robb.
11-07-2006, 07:39 AM
do it! i've been to GTGs in very small places. if you have 1,000 square feet in your house, you can probably get about ten people for a GTG. it'll be tight, but workable. and we can expedition to RIT and GC. try to do it on a night when there's a good show at ten bells.

+1 Also, even though I had a blast at Tom B's hang, it was a little overwhelming... almost too much stuff and too many people... hard to really get a feel for the sound of a lot of the stuff (don't get me wrong.... it was a blast!). It would be fun to get together and check out a more limited collection of popular gear (or at least gear that gets some buzz on TB) that TBers might be interested in hearing about.... maybe EpiUL cabs, a couple Bergs, Schroeders, Thunderfunks, Glocks, some Eden stuff, Accugroove, EA, Ampeg, etc.... similar to what a few of us did at Vic's house a while back.

Small and limited is not necessarily a bad thing! I'm in if the timing works... I'll supply an Epi410UL, and couple small Bergs, a Thunderfunk, Glock HR, Walter Woods and a couple of basses (maybe Sadowsky and Celinder) to get things started!

I'll keep my eye out on this thread in case something happens.

i can bring the peavey armada.

ok, it's a cirrus BXP unlike any other BXP and a classic 400. i also have a bergantino HT-112, and a warwick quadruplet with a crest pro 7200. i'm mostly there to meet people. if the other detroit guys with all the good gear show up, then we'll have something.

+1... from looking at the profiles of the posters on this thread, there would be lots of interesting stuff... tube amps, AI stuff, etc. And, I'm with you... it's all about the hang and meeting other bassists!

I added a poll to this thread to get a general idea of what month to try to do this in. (not an exact date yet, just the month then we'll go from there)

well my house is very small (sub 1000 feet)... but i'm sure i could talk my wife into it :) also ten bells is going to be a problem... it seems that the former owners didnt like to pay taxes... so it's closed and the pa has been auctioned off :(

i understand you on space. i have a 900-something square foot house, and i wouldn't want more than ten coming over. it'd be too cramped.

bummer about ten bells. where do people go to see shows anymore?

seriously sweet looking gear profiles in this thread. the good news is that i won't have to bring my HT-112, since there probably will be one there already.

no biggie to me on the booze and beer... i just hope i dont burst into flames as i walk in the door :P

rcz: I'm not sure anymore... ten bells and the radio were my favs and the radio burned down a couple of years ago... there's a new place called the rocker where most of my friends bands are playing, but i haven't checked it out yet...

also for those browsing profiles my rig will be changing drastically in the next 5 days :D

Hey Hurl.. I think the church is a great idea! It really fits with the whole West Michigan vibe. The local gents around here will know what I'm talking about;)

If we cant bring in food or alcoholic beverages, we could think about having a gear session at the church and then meet at another location for socializing/food/drinks...etc if people want to.

If all else fails, I'll be happy to open my house up. I also have a sub 1000sqft home and based on the interest level so far it would be a tight squeeze. It could work though. It would be difficult to get everyone in the same room at the same time (splitting between main level space and basement).

robb.

there was a harmony central GTG in columbus, OH that basically needed two rooms to work. it is doable, but you have to want it.

robb.
11-08-2006, 11:32 AM
those rooms would be plenty. maybe leave some chairs or something for people to sit (i can bring folding chairs if needed). realistically, you can fit a lot of amps and basses in that kind of space with no furniture. and if you don't have a lot of trinkets and stuff taking up space, you probably wouldn't have to move too much.

Cool, if this works out, I'll bring the Rob Allen MB5, the Celinder, the Glockenklang HeartRock, and the BergHT210s/HT122s, if that's good with you.

I'm in Kalamazoo and I may be able to get us an auditorium space that has some nice room in it for hanging out.

Let me know if you guys are interested in:
A/ Meeting in Kalamazoo. As far as I can tell, it'd be a good location considering people are coming from Detroit, Grand Rapids, etc.

B/ Meeting in an auditorium setting. There is a lot of room in there and I've done GTGs like this before in there (we have LAN parties there a lot), so I think it would work nicely. We don't have any all-bass stores, however we do have several stores, one of which is a few blocks from the auditorium.

Let me know what you guys think, and if you like the idea, I'll see if I can get my old boss to let us use the space.

That sounds like a cool alternative. I would be in, assuming I'm not on the road that weekend.

You know, we Detroit guys always post about hangs at LDS. That works out great since 1) the Low Down Sound guys are about the nicest in the business and 2) we all spend quite a bit of money there.

However, usually a GTG in a music store (bass only or not) is not necessarily a good idea. Most stores are not that thrilled about a bunch of guys bringing in high end gear that the store doesn't carry.

That was a long winded way of saying that a non-music store location would be a positive IMO. We Detroiters are just very luck to have such a great store with a great owner/manager and staff that puts up with us descending on them every quarter or so.:D

Now to the date. The majority seem to want to do Jan. SO.....

The sooner we can narrow down a date, the sooner I can book the room.

The 6th I'm at the Raddison, the 13th is River City Saloon, the 20th is free, and the 27th I'm at a place called BFE's in Allendale (I think it really is in BFE!)

The 20th is the best of the lot. Kzoo is a bit of a drive, but if my wife will let me out of the house........

I'll bring my Ric, my 5 string Carvin fretless, and an amp. Maybe I'll bring my nephew along for the ride too.

If anyone is around for the gigs, stop on in, I'll let you borrow my band for a while!!

My wife does not have that level of appreciation. At least not yet, I bought her a bass not too long ago.

i tried buying a bass for my wife because she wanted to learn how to play. she didn't devote the time to it. but after having her join a band i was in as the singer, she uttered magical words: "i finally get it. i think you should get the bass and amp you want to play out with."

My wife is not into wanting to know about my basses/amps. But she totally suports me, and just shakes her head when I want to spend money on more bass stuff.

Magical words indeed!!

My wife hasn't devoted time to it yet, but we have made a date to get on it after the first of the year(too many holidays/birthdays between now and then). I'm going to teach her some simple songs she likes, we'll see from there.

I have just booked the room for Jan. 20 2007. Here's a link to a new poll/post in this section asking for pretty rock solid confirmations for this date, and to post gear you will bring, and beverages/food/snacks.

I know it's a little ways away, but I'm putting up the cash for the room, and I'd hate to loose it. (my $$ that is)

Also included is the address for the church that the GTG will be at for anyone to mapquest it or whatnot.

Is there anyone interested in doing a clinic or anything like that? I'm personally not good enough to show anyone anything.;)
