Hi all

I am starting playing bass & start working on tabs. What I do is translate the tabs into a very helpful simple soft that reads tabs & translate them into normal music sheet. Therefore helping me to read music.

However I often meet difficulties reading tabs cos there is no info regarding tempo & I dont manage to find out what is the lenght of the note.
How could I do that.

In fact I never know what tempo it is an worst which lenght of note to use.

How is it possible to recognise the lenght of a note by simply reading tabs?

You have JUST RELISED why sheet music is much better then tab, But I would listen or download the song, match the tempo with your metraphom (is you have one) and once you get it at the right tempo write down the BPM. That's what I do. Also I can not help you with the timing. again, listen to the song and figure it out.

That's the burning question, isn't it? I believe most tab users will respond that U HAVE 2 LISTEN 2 THE RECORD 2 GET THE TIEMINGS, or something of that nature. Kudos on your quest to learn to read standard notation. You're on the right path for long-term gain.

That is a great way to learn how to read music. The next step is to listen to a song, and transcribing directly to standard notation. Once you can do this, then you can play by just reading sheet music, which is an important skill if you wish to progress as a professional musician.
