I am currently in my high school jazz band and my director told me that I need to start getting away from the music and start coming up with bass lines other than what written on the page. I currently play what’s written on the page, nothing more and nothing less does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do that

Just have to do it. I'd say grab a Real Book and Todd's DVD and Walking Bass. Then take tunes and start coming up with Walking Lines.

Also take the music you have been playing and extract the lines that appeal to you. Analyze what notes or rhythms appeal to you. There is your source material for your own lines. We all learn to create by taking what we like from the past and using it create our own music.

I believe it was Herbie Hancock who said. Steal everything you can from the greats of the past. Then forget it all and play.

Hi Kevin,

Sorry I'm so slow in getting back to you.... thanks for your patience!!

Steve really gave you the right advice.... I recommend picking up my "Walking Bass" DVD.... then take those skills and apply it to the tunes you're playing in school. Both you and your director will be glad you did.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound like a salesman or an infomercial.... But I did that DVD specifically for guys in your position...

I hope this helps.
