I'm looking forward to meeting all you guys. I will be there unless there's some sort of monster snow storm or something.

I won't have room to bring all of this, but here's a list of what I have available:

Walter Woods Ultra
Epi410UL (4ohm)
Glockenklang Heart Rock
Thunderfunk550b
Bergantino HT210s/HT122s stack

Celinder Update 5
Sadowsky NYC RV5
Sadowsky NYC Modern 5
Rob Allen MB2-5 Fretless

I believe another potential attendee has an Epi410UL.... if he would bring that, I could fit everything else in my car.

Ken

PS I'm glad to throw in some cash to help pay for the room.

Hello all. Some good news, and some bad news....
(although none of you would know it's bad because nobody had a clue in the first place. But anyway)

Good news: I invited Dan Lakin (Lakland basses) to come and bring some basses and do a little presentation for our GTG.

Bad news: He wants to come, BUT it's NAMM and he can't.

Good News: If this GTG goes well and we want to do another one in the future, he'd be in.

Sorry guys....I tried.:crying:

That would have been cool, and Dan is a great guy! However, sometimes it's nice to just get together with other TBers in a more relaxed hang versus 'clinics/manufacturers', etc. I'm looking forward to this. It's always fun to meet other bassists, and other TBers.

I can probably attend this as well. I could bring a variety of different gear depending on car space and what anyone wants to play around with.

I could bring:
70's SVT
GK Neo212
Genz Benz NeoX212
TF550A
GBE1200

and various assorted fun basses to play.

11-15-2006, 12:46 PM
Ah bummer. I could have had him bring a new volume pot for my Rumzini Sinature 55-01. which of course I'll bring. The 20th is the last saturday of a two week vacation for me...so I'll be there.

I'm the budget man so if anyone wants I'll bring my Avatar 212 and 410 deltas, QSC RMX 2450, and my pedal board which currently consists of...

Digitech Whammy
Boss Chorus
Ibanez Delay
Rocktron Black Cat Moan/Wah

I'm sure by then I'll have some sort of distorion/OD on it as well.

Of course my Lakland 55-01

I'm sure I'll bring some sort of delights like some no bake cookies, brownies, and some Dr. Pepper

Wow, I'm glad I cruised over to this forum for the first time. What a great opportunity! I don't know if I can make it yet, as I'm starting a new job in January, but I'm not far from Holland (I'm down near South Bend, IN), in Berrien Co. This would definitely be the funnest (is that a word?) thing all winter, other than gigging in Chicago. I'll have to wait a bit and see. I have some gear that might be of some interest, as well as just the kick of meeting some of you TB blokes! Wow, famous, published people!

We can probably start earlier if anyone is interested, and POSSIBLY go untill 3 or 4 (the 4 is not too likely though)

So far there are only 6 confirmed people coming, and 14 possibly. The way these things go, people will start dropping out a few days before, so I don't imagine there being 20 people attending. (but it would be cool if there were!)

I've confirmed with my wife on this GTG...I will be there.

Here's a thought. Since I'm no way near the caliber player as the rest of ya, nor does my gear even compare as well. I do have a Canon digital video camera to get some shots of interest. I'll be able to edit, produce the video, and get them up somewhere if anyone can help me out with that...hosting?

Ampeg 6x10

I want to check out one of these UL410s. I don't remember it too much from the last gig, but I remember Ken once reccomending it to me as a great punchy rock rig. Sounds fun, and I might be cab shopping soon.

Just a reminder..... the GTG is set for 10am to 2pm.
(Our church just started a Sat. eve. service, and I think I'm going to be roped into playing that evening)

If anyone is planning on sticking around town for a while, I'll be glad to give some rec's, for places to hang out and have a bite or a drink. If I end up playing that evening, if anyone is still around, I can meet up afterwards.

Maybe we can start an updated 'what everyone is bringing' post... could you keep a running tally.

I am planning on bringing the Glock Heart Rock, the Epi410UL, and my Walter Woods. I can bring the TF instead of the Walter Woods if no one else has one.

Bass wise, I'm planning on one of the Celinders and my Sadowsky Modern... although I could swap out the Sadowsky with the Rob Allen if someone is interested.

I'm just waiting to find out about a gig up in Petoskey that night, which I should know about in the next few days. My wife bought me the Audere Jazz Pre for Christmas and it's pretty rockin', so if I can make it I'll be bringing my '96 Jazz, a Taylor AB-1, and my Bergie HT322.

I can also bring my Alembic F-1X and QSC 1602PLX if anyone is interested. If I haven't sold or swapped my ElectroHarmonix BiFilter and Read Hollowbody Fretless by then I'll probably bring them too.

Well, it's official. I'm out.

Apparently the band they had at the hotel had a melt down on NYE. Walked out half way through the gig, and isn't playing the Radisson anymore. We are filling their slot on the 19th and 20th. I don't think I'll be up to doing much of anything before noon on the 20th.

I hope eveything goes well!

Have fun!

If you are in the vicinity on 131 and Ann st in Grand Rapids that weekend, stop on out at the Radisson. I'd love to hear all about the GTG!

Hey Steve (and Matt)... considering all the stuff that I'm bringing up, and the fact that you are bringing your cabs also, I'd just as soon drive over on my own. It's only about a 2 hour (or a little more) drive, and I don't really want to get into having to meet, reload cars, and then reload again when we get back.

So, I think I'll just head up on my own. Since you and Matt are bringing less stuff, maybe you guys can carpool together.

Apparently there were F-You's exchanged with the guy that owns the hotel, and a heated discussion followed by them not finishing the gig. It was one of those deals where you pay a couple hundred bucks to stay at the hotel on NYE and be entertained and have dinner and cocktails and such. Not sure what the head count was, but the guy that owns the joint is a little PO'd to say the least.

Can anyone tell me what is going to go on at this thing? I'd like to go but have only been playing again for a short while and I'm sure most people will play circles arund me so Im kind of intimidated. Also, I don't think I'll bring my amp as it is an old Peavy TNT 130 and very heavy but what I could bring is my old Warwick Fortress. Also, if anyone has some Schroeder cabs I'd love to try some out. Due to cerebral pulsy I need a light setup and would love to hear my Fortress through a GK 1001RB and Schrodeder cabs to see if I like this setup.

Hello! I've been to a number of GTG's and it has NOTHING to do with showing off chops or 'I'm better than you are', etc. You will find the TB gang the most friendly and supportive group of players around. I hope you come. It's all about meeting other TBErs, talking about bass, playing a little bit if you so choose, and having the chance to play great gear that rarely shows up on a music store showroom floor, and also to A/B some stuff without a bunch of other noise, etc.

It's fun if you are at least a little bit of a gear head.... you have to be to enjoy hearing and evaluating whole notes on open E strings as some of us argue on the nature of the low end response of cab A to cab B :D

Come on down ( or over, or whatever).

Ken

PS I played a A LOT of gigs back in the day on a TNT130... great combo, although I agree it's not a lightweight:D

No reason to be intimidated at all. If intimidation was a factor, I wouldn't host a GTG. (remember this isn't a guitar or drummer GTG:D ) For I'm sure most of the people there can play circles around me as well. Just come, check out some different gear, and put a face to some of the names here on TB.

Cool. I'll probably have a drum kit before long. Both kids seem to like drums a lot, and are actually somewhat proficient on my cousin's kit (full size). I have the piano covered, as well.

As for the Daisy Rock bass, I might actually get one for myself for covering some Go Go's, Bangles and whatnot. :D

Steve (Burk) and I were discussing the weather yesterday. Hopefully, it will be fine. They are predicting snow all across the state from Friday evening into Saturday, with reasonably heavy snow in the Detroit area. A little snow doesn't bother me, but if it's moderately bad and turns a 3 hour drive into a 5 hour drive, that's probably not a good thing.

Let's hope it's just flurries and everything will be cool, since I'm looking very forward to the hang.

I assume we will all check in here Friday after the weather situation becomes more clear.

thehurlatron
01-18-2007, 08:54 AM
SYNOPSIS: Lt. snow rolled through the area this morning. In most locations, this only amounted to an inch or so of accumulation. It proved to be just enough snow to re-slicken area roadways. More snow will move in tonight through Friday Night. Many areas could see 1-4" accumulation. There is a Lake Effect Snow Watch up for a good portion of Northern Lower Michigan and Upper Michigan for 6-12" of snow during that time period.

Things calm down over the weekend, with another 1-3" of snow possible on Monday.
__________________________________________________ ___________

That is the current GR/Holland forcast.

So far, we are not included in the Lake effect watch for the big snow. (it's north of here)

FYI: the trip here from the east will be 99% highway miles, so hopefully the roads should be clear.

I'll keep everyone updated about the weather and such. Feel free to PM me about changes in attendance. If the #'s drop too much, I will postpone the GTG untill a later date. (Dang Michigan weather.....2 winter months of 40-50 and no snow untill the week of the GTG.:rollno: )

Sounds good. I by no means want people to travel in weather they do not feel safe in. I'll have no problem rescheduling if need be.

I just figured that regardless of weather, that at least 30-50% would cancel anyway. (at least from what I noticed in other GTG threads)

I'm planning on bringing some snacks to the event, any suggestions on what people want?

Also, I figure that since it's over around two, maybe a few of us could go out to lunch afterwards somewhere in the area.

And going out afterward is cool. And if anyone wants to stash a car or gear at my house for a bit, that's cool. (I hate leaving gear out in a COLD car. And lookie-loo's as well.)

Sadly, I won't be able to make it to this GTG.
But, if I can hook up with either KJung or Burk I'll hand off my Groove Shoppe 5 (GS5) and/or AccuGroove Tri115 (if they have room!)
They only issue is I need the Tri115 back tomorrow night for a gig, so that may have to stay with me.

The GS5 I can sneak by without. I can 4 string it mostly on this gig.
Sorry David and Joel (@ the Groove Shoppe) but it's a bunch of bass players and not a club full of people, which would you pick!:D

IF something changes and I can come, then I'll add my Parker Fly 4, Thunderfunk 550B, AccuGroove Tri115/Tri112 and the above mentioned GS5 to the list of gear.
I doubt I can swing it though.

New carpet being put in and stuff.

Enjoy yourselves fellas!!!

Sorry you can't make it. My car is packed... so no room for anything else. We will have plenty of stuff to play though.

Let's hope the weather holds so we can get there without it being a hassle! Looks like most of the nasty stuff doesn't start until Sunday, so it looks like a go at the moment.

Ha! We can probably fit it in if you can get it to Steve. QUite frankly, from my original plan of just driving myself, this is getting rapidly more complicated than I wanted to deal with. However, if you can get the bag to Steve prior to 7am tomorrow, we can take it no problem.

I must admit that Kens Heart Rock driving my LDS 210 was unreal. Not only did the cab take it, it sounded huge! I have never had it near that loud as a stand alone. Well if I ever have an extra two or three grand I know what my BIG amp head would be. And G's Skjold is the real deal, although my six string days are long over. It was mass bass dyslexia when I tried to play it.

i really liked G's skjold, and KJung's sadowsky M5. both were seriously sweet. the best part -- besides shelly's playing -- was how enjoyable all you people are. it's good to know there are so many great people (and great players) in the metro area.

+1 on Shelly layin' it down. Very nice.

For those who are interested, we had an unusual combination of 'big iron' heads and small cabs there:

Glockenklang Heart Rock
DB750
Peavey 400 (amazing... beautiful big tube amp)
Warwick Pre with a big honking Power amp

along with a Thunderfunk550b and EdenWT550

Cabs

EA VL210
AG Tri112
Berg 's' stack (HT210s/HT122s)
LDS 210

There were too many basses to remember:D Sadowsky's, Celinder, Skjold, Fender, Peavey, etc.... a nice variety of classic and modern tones to give this stuff a whirl.

Also, and this was very cool, the room that we were in actually was very similar to a typical gigging room... large, high ceiling, carpet on the floor. So it was nice to check this stuff out and to be able to crank it to gig volumes.

Just a couple of observations (in somewhat random order) on my part for any that are interested. I assume the other attendees will chime in with their takes and any disagreements or clarification.

1) You get what you pay for in weight.... while I love the Thunderfunk and WT550 (they are wonderful sounding, light, loud, gigworthy heads), there was no comparison to the volume, presence and bass response of these smaller heads compared to the big boys. It was the first time I was able to hear these heads directly compared in real time in a 'gig type' setting. I always thought the few TBers who said the TF can mimic the DB750 were smoking something... now I know they are smoking something!

2) The LDS stuff continues to impress.... great sounding, lightweight, and cost effective.

3) The Accugroove Tri112 sounded quite good (although very mellow and reserved) with the DB750 or Glock pumping into it. The smaller heads really didn't do it justice. Still not my thing, but for a warm organic tone, if you have enough power and 'ooomph' going into one, it's really quite nice. Hurlatron's rig of the DB750 and Tri112 with his Lakland sounded REALLY good... warm, warm, warm... fat, fat, fat. In A/Bing the EA VL210 with the Tri112 (somewhat similar designs), I felt the Tri112 blew the VL away at half the size and weight!

4) My favorite rigs of the afternoon were:

- TF with the Berg 's' stack.... big but tight low end, beautiful singing treble, lot's of definition (interestingly, I never use that combination... I always use my Walter with the Berg's.... I'm going to have to rethink that!)

- Per above... the Tri112/DB750.... totally warm, organic tone, and surprisingly loud, and I think the somewhat compressed tone of the Tri112 actually was a positive with the 'somewhat too wide and bloomy' DB750... nice pairing!

- LDS210/Glock.... Steve's LDS 210 with the B&C speakers is quite similar to the EpiUL tone.... even though the Glock was only putting out partial power into that 8ohm cab, it was uber modern, crisp, full, but very tight and articulate.... the best 'slap' style combination there.

Finally, again all those basses made my head spin a little, but one thing I do remember is that Shelly's active Fender J 5 string (not sure about the model) and Dan's 'modified Marcus Miller' stood up VERY well to the Celinder/Sadowsky super J's... nice basses, and nothing really does sound exactly like a Fender except a Fender!!!!

Again, very, very nice meeting you all. I do love all things bass.

This thing was awesome. All of you guys can play circles around me so I was content to listen most of the time.

Thanks for bringing the LDS. Because of my cerebral pulsy and need for light wieght, I thought I was limited to Schroeder. And Bob gave me excellent service when I bought my Warwick from him off of this site. I'll definately check them out when I join a band and the need comes.

That Skjold was amazing.

It was nice to see a Sadowsky that didn't look like a J bass, as they aren't my thing.

Shelly's playing is amazing.

And with all these multithousand dollar instrumennts there, the bass that fit me the best was that Peavey Cirrus prototype that you got for $100. Makes me want to go out and try the production model right now.

Thanks guys.

Hey,

I agree with Ken...it was great experiencing the different amps and cabs, especially because I'm considering a small modular rig.

I didn't play through the Aggie, but heard others play through it and boy did it have the power! I did play through the TF, Eden and Glock with various cabs and Glock was definitely beefy. Those LDS cabs really have me thinking...

All the basses were impressive in their own way. The Peavey sound and build quality were great, and I believe most of us agreed that the Carvin 6'er begged to have the frets ripped out...what wonderful mids! The Marcus was hard to put down, and I loved the top end zing on Ken's Celinder. Sadowsky's are always shining stars. I wanted to rip the pup cover from Burk's so badly, but I also wanted to live :) . The Skjold 6 was a winner, too.

I didn't get around to the Warwick or the Lakland, which I really wanted to do. I played a 55-02 at LDS on Friday and found it to be very solid and versatile.

BTW, my Fender that Ken referred to is a stock 2006 MIA Jazz Deluxe V with SCN pick-ups. I really think that Fender could have some winners if they tightened up quality control and listened to customers concerning 5-string neck profiles.

It was cool to put a face to some of the names.

I did a fair share of sittin' back and soaking it all in. I was just AMAZED by the playing of everyone who picked up a bass.

This GTG is going to be bad on my wallet.:D

Kens Celinder, and Sadowsky modern 24, Steves Sadowsky......the one with gold all over it;) , was super sharp and played like butter.
G's Skjold looked like $1.0M buck and sounded like more than that. (I didn't play it though....I'm intimidated by 6'ers)

Thanks for posting the pictures guys.

You know... what a great time to be a bassist. Look at those tiny little cabs in the pictures, and every one of them was rockin'... each one would be enough for at least a mid sized gigs, and two of any of them would be enough for anything. And while the big Heart Rock, Peavey400, TB750 all sounded amazing, the little Thunderfunk and WT550 held their own fine, and would be enough for all but the loudest gig.

This was a really great time guys. I had a lot of fun, and was really blown away by some things, and other things didn't live up to my expectations. As I expected, i dug the Fender-style basses more than anything else. Ken's Celinder practically plays itself. I've played this one a few times before, but it really does it for me every time, and that birdseye neck is gorgeous! Shelly's Am. Dlx. Jazz was killer, too. I think my favorite bass, for what I do, was Burke's Metro... I don't need a fiver, but damn does that thing do the rock and roll tone well. I liked it a lot more than his NYC sadowsky. It just had something going in the low mids that kills me. If you ever decide to have that stupid moment where you let it go, Steve, you know who to call.

As always, at these GTGs, I'm really amazed by how well my Marcus Miller stood up to the higher-end stuff. I mean, it's no celinder, but it's about 1/4 of the price! Shelly put my bass through a workout like it's never seen, too! That girl can PLAY!

I had a blast. Thanks to all for making us hack players feel accepted. The guy I brought, Brian, while not a bass player, had a riot too, and he's kind of half considering picking up a bass now. I mean, hooray for new bass blood, but dammit, you guys are stealing my singer/guitar player!

Dude, Dan, that Marcus was killin'!

Thanks, the Aeros in it really do it for me.

I'm no six man, but that Skjold was smokin. I cant believe how it could go from that real bright, guitar like top end, to that thick p-bass like tone, just with the passive tone control.

Shelly
01-22-2007, 03:27 PM
Dude, Dan, that Marcus was killin'!

I agree...totally. It was veeerrry hard to put down. I'm primarily a 5-string player, but that 4-string felt like home to me. That, combined with the tone makes Dan's MM a great bass.

BTW, thanks again to Matt for getting us together. I really enjoyed everyone. It was nice to be in a room with capable, knowledgeable bass players and great equipment. Lookin' forward to whatever GTG's happen in the area this summer.

The other thing I forgot to mention that was very cool was Robb's Warwick pre. I think I remember that it actually has a tube amp with some sort of power soak device, so you get the full 'tube growl' thing, emulating a full tube power amp.

While that isn't really my personal thing, it sure did sound 'legit' to me... very warm and growly. Nice!!!

robb.
01-22-2007, 04:20 PM
man, i love that pre. it is a gig machine. and while the most notable part of it is the convincing tube power tone on setting 3, it is really useful in all four settings. someone heard setting 4 and said it was a slap machine! settings 1 and 2 don't use the tube power amp, and setting 2 is the only one of the four that comes close to being flat. (well, technically setting 4 is flat, but i don't know if that's taken before or after the power transformer.)

i could go on forever on the warwick. way underappreciated, probably due to its rarity and $1k new pricetag. i got onto one after playing through the quad VI head at elderly instruments.

give me a few years and i'll make a better, smaller one for cheaper. ;)

We missed you... it was fun. Not an overwhelming amount of gear, but some very differently voiced stuff.. a very wide range of aggressive, grindy, super clean, small and light, big and heavy. It was fun.

Thanks for posting that Glock picture. Boy, did the HR sound good in that big room through the LDS cab. Nice!

I would love to try the Glock with a 4ohm Glock410. From what I heard of your 112, that 410 is probably a killer. A little heavy for me, but right at 80 pounds I think, which makes it one of the lightest 'non neo' 410's.

I don't know if you noticed, but the Glock Ultra Lights still use their stock Volt (or whatever they are) ceramic magents. All the weight savings comes from the composite cab material. That's a unique approach. I think Oteil B. has a custom Epi410 which uses the NYC drivers, but placed in the light poplar UL cabinet. That's kind of a cool compromise for those that want a bigger, deeper, traditional tone from a slightly lighter cab!

I talked with Udo a bit, and he is certainly looking into neo drivers, but he has not found anything that meets with his satisfaction.

He did mention, though, that because of your comments, he has relabeled the lettering around the Gain knob, and now calls the "Peak/Clip" light "Overdrive." So, he said to say that you were right (for a change! :smug: :p JK, of course).

Ha! I do get one right every once in a while... but as I always say... 'I've been wrong so many times before':D

Cool on that.. they also changed the manual around a little bit. Udo is very cool, and was very helpful when I had a few questions. I bet the HR running at 2.67 ohms and 1000 watts into that new 6x10 was amazing!

Dudes and dudettes, I had a couploe auditions this week, and although my Skjold absolutely killed, I couldn't help but think about all the sweet gear I had played at the GTG.

For one aud. I had to learn a couple of old disco/funk tune - Tell Me Somthin' Good etc. I thought of Dan's MM.

For the other I had to learn Bad Compnay and Cheap Trick tunes, and I thought about Robb's 400.

How about we start a gear pool?

I need details....
I'm bummed that i missed the GTG, looks like a fine time was had by all.
It would have been nice to see my Skjold played by someone that would do it justice, I feel like a 90 yr old man in a Lamborghini when I play it......
:hmm:

Dude, there were some players there, that's for sure. We still should do some kind of Skjold hang here in the near future, and there is going to be a clinic next week at Lowdown.

Pete is going to be in Ohio in March, I think. I am hoping to meet up with him, and maybe we can schedule a GTG with the man himself! :D

I have an out of town gig Thursday that will require me to leave town on Wednesday...rats!

Per your visit, the clinic is actually down the street from Low Down Sound, not in the store. My guess is the store will close early that day (versus the standard 6pm closing time), so you would have to get there early is you wanted to check out the store.

Have fun!

Well, looks like I won't be at the clinic. I'm not feeling horrible, yet I'm not feeling well enough to drive an hour there and back. Too bad, because I was looking forward to meeting more of my fellow Michigan bass players. Maybe some other time!
