I just routed & chiseled what is, as far as I can tell, a perfect neck pocket - on my first homemade bass.
Damn I feel good.

Pics soon, I hope.

congrats, glad it worked for you.

When i was building my bass, I was really happy about my perfectly routed music man humbucker hole, then i realised i routed it the wrong way around......So the side with 2 screw holes were pointing towards the knobs.

...chiseled...

This word frightens and confuses me.

??? I use a chisel to square up the neck pocket on my set necks.

No problem with "chisel"... but "plane" might as well be "neurosurgery scalpel."

Was this a problem? I mean, the normal way isn't necessarily the right or only way. Unless there's lettering on the pickup or something.

I recently had a high when I glued my neck onto my first electric ever. First chance to really sit down with it and see how it feels. It was AWESOME!

The chiseling on the neck pocket wasn't bad at all. Get it nice and sharp on the oilstone, and I barely even needed a mallet to drive it.

The next task is gluing some cherry veneer on the inside edges of the pickup routes. Getting it all around the 'ears' for the MM and the J pickups is going to be a chore. More updates soon!

I'm also going to be dyeing the maple/maple neck as soon as I get my paws on a piece of birdseye to confirm the shade of dye I picked.
