but where's the fun in that?!?!

seriously, I would suggest that you put together a bass out of Warmoth parts. It's easy, fool proof and you'll end up with a high quality instruments. Plus they have a bunch of custom options that you can choose from to make it a 'real' custom bass. Just a thought.

I believe they can ship internationally.

probably because a warmoth parts bass will cost you close $1k all told, and that kit is about $125. :D

To the OP...
Pick a kit. They're all going to be pretty much the same honestly.

If it were me though, I'd go a hybrid approach. Pick up a good quality neck from Carvin, Warmoth, All-Parts, or Mighty-mite, dig up some electronics (ebay for cheap, or pick nicer stuff) and hardware, and then build your own body. Cost will be a bit more than one of those kits, but you'll end up with a bass you designed yourself.

yeah I was just thinking that if I picked up a kit fr quite cheap then once it ws all together I could start looking fr beta prts to put on. cos then at least I would know my bass will work

well, if you buy a neck and electronics, its hard to build a bass body that wont work:D
Ok.....In all seriousness, those kits arnt the greatest quality, you will get a playable instrument, but the quality will still vary from kit to kit.

So unless you want to pay 75 quid for an experience and a possibly crappy bass, You should pay that extra money and have a experience AND a good/reasonable quality bass(depending on your wood working skills I guess)

ive done the harley benton kits from thomann, great fun, learnt alot more about finishing than building basses though.

Thanks1 is it something you would recomend doing rather than just buying a cheapy £60 bass and then customising it?

on the thoman website it has a picture of a different coloured body to the one you started with http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_bass_guitar_kit.htm
when I get the bass i probs wont be paintin it till the summer so I want the body to be a reasonably ok colour to start with. Is that the same bass that you bought.?

Go with a carvin B4 kit. I have built 3 kits, and Carvins quality is superb. All the parts fit nicely and the sound is excellent.

The basic kit goes for $399 USD.

Are you in the UK? If so, here's Carvin's international site:

What kind of experience do you want? Tightening screws and heating solder? If so, go for a kit.

If the experience you want is anyway close to luthierie, you make it all yourself. OK, perhaps less the electronics and hardware - or perhaps not!

I tell you: the actual making is more fun and interesting and rewarding etc than the assembly. Even making some of the hardware (haven't tried pups - yet).

The opinionmachine has spoken!

Carvin makes kits. it'll run you like $400 or so, plus maybe another $50 for odds and ends for finishing and whatnot.

i made my first bass just wingin it....came out pretty good too, a lil intonation problem but it was easily fixed. I suggest you do the same, warmoth makes amazing necks at a fairly good price, thats the hardest part about the entire build, plus building a custom one gives it exactly what you want
