What a rush!!! Saturday was my first practice with the band I am going to be playing with. The band is called "Virtue 7" and we play hard rock type christian music.(all original). The band has been together for about a year but recently lost half of it's members who weren't working out. Earlier they had asked me to be the Sound guy for them and I told them sure. The day the three guys quit I was asked by the founder of the band if I wanted to think about playing with them. It is cool because my best friend is now their drummer and has always been my biggest critic. So they asked if I wanted to go to practice Saturday and see if I wanted to give it a try. I went with the intention of not playing, but rather going to watch and get a feel for the music and perhaps get some lyrics and chord changes for some of their stuff. As luck would have it I had been by my parents earlier in the day to get some of the last things from thier house. One of those things happened to be one of my basses. So I get there and they were like "where do you want to set up?" I told them I was going to just watch and get a feel for things, but they wouldn't hear of it. So I get my bass and bringit in and plug it in through thier sound system. and they start playing. Here I am standing there with my bass in hand and I raise my hand and ask, "Anyone care to tell me the chords?" They tell me the changes but that's it not when to change or anything else. So they start playing a song I've never heard before and I start freakin rockin the house. We went over about 6 songs, (none of which I had heard before) and I played them like I helped write them. My friend who as I said before is my biggest critic was even freaking out. He didn't expect me to play at all that practice and when he heard me he was impressed that I did as well as I did. He even noticed that I was not nervous about it at all.

That was the most fun I have ever had playing bass since I started a year ago, and I can't wait to do it again.:D

hey do you get alot of flack for playing in a christian hard rock band? my band "7 Rise Up" and the situation you're in sounds so much like mine and i get people telling me all the time that i'm going to hell for playing that kind of music in the lords name

Actually I haven't got any negative feeback about it yet, but I'm sure one day I will. There is a preacher around here (not at my church) that pretty much believes that anything not in the hymn book is the devil's music.....boy that's a fun church service. My church can be rockin at times. Like tonight we played the song "I want to see Jesus lifted high" and we all really get into that song so it kind of gets a little rowdy. But hey if you can't get excited in church every now and then well foo.

well i've yet to play a gig with my band i just joined a month or two ago and we're working toward recording before we play live but they used to play at some churches here but most wouldn't have them

I havent been around in a while, but if anyone gives you any flack about being in a Christian Rock band, and they say that "You're going to hell", just play them a cd of an early 80's band called Stryper!

yeah well the only problem with the stryper thing is our sound tends to be closer to black metal and death metal

Why do you guys have to mix your music with your superstition? Can't you just keep them separate?

Oh my, I thought I was one of the few who has that - except mine is on vinyl.

i play music from my heart!!! but, unfortunately, since my heart is black and evil, i can only play death metal!!!

Yup. That was them. My wife always thought they were way too pretty. Kind of rockin' music though.

I agree with MunjiBunga. Thats all i got to say, other than its a great exprence locking in and playing with a band aint it? most wonderful thing in the world.


O ya. that stupid band also thru out bibles or something liek that at there concerts. just another way to become famous. "HEY GUYS! WE DONT READ THESE THINGS! YOU HAVE EM! "CHUNK""

Anyways, that's great bassistjedi. By setting in with a band that you've never played with before, you have one of the most important things as a musician. If musician's are truly good, they can feel each other out very quickly and begin playing with each other in very short time. You said you were told what the chord changes were but not where they were. That's very important, to be able to "feel" the changes. It's something you'll do without even thinking of. You just know when it's time to go to the next chord. Good luck, and happy bassing. :)

Well tomorrow I have another practice with the band so I will find out if I still fit in the groove. Our practices are pretty spread apart since we all work different schedules and live pretty spread out. Anyway I will keep you guys posted on upcoming news and events. We are also working on a website. Also so far no recorded stuff with my playing yet so the only demo I could post would be some of their older stuff with someone else playing.

That's so cool man, I had a simular experiance, I'm already in a band, and another band that we are aquantaces with, their bass player stepped down because he couldn't cut it so they asked if I could be their backup bassist. I learned their ten song set in one practice. they sound alot like Creed but a little more complicated. balancing two bands is a challange but a blessing. I was honored to be asked to play in their band. I am more than happy to help bear a brother's cross.
