With a pick, mute the string with your fleshy bit at the pinky side of your hand.
The closer to the bridge your muting (fleshy bit of your hand) is, the more note will sound.
You can also just attempt to play harmonics in a non-harmonic producing area of the string, if you know what I mean. Much deadness will occur.
Season to taste.

it depends what you mean..
jadesmar's advice is correct for playing muted/damped notes.. i.e. you'll hear the pitch but the sound decays a lot quicker than normal because your hand is absorbing the energy of the string
the other kind of 'dead' notes are ones where all you hear is a percussive click... and for those you pick as normal but you lift your fingers so the string is off the fingerboard but your finger is on the string... so you're effectively plucking a string that's damped by your left hand
will record you a snippet of each when I get home

they sound a lot different to each other, so it's handy to be able to use both or a combination of the two
this is muted with the left hand
