Planet Boulder 12-24-2006, 07:09 PM I know that someone created a "best bass CDs of 2006", but how about best overall?

jrthebassguy 12-25-2006, 12:39 AM My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
This album totally threw me off. Some of their emo/pop-sensibilites are still intact, but no doubt, this is a friggin rock album. A theatrical rock opera of sorts, and a pretty cool concept idea to boot. By far my favorite of the year.
Justin V 12-25-2006, 02:58 AM The Format - Dog Problems (I can't listen to it without smiling. my pick for album of the year)
The Matches - Decomposer
1/2 of MCR's "Black Parade" (about half of it's great, the rest is "meh")
Weird Al - Striaght Outta Lynwood
30 Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie
Mars Volta - Amputechture
Brand New - The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me (just got it. WOW!!!)
I'm sure there are more to put on the list, but it's late and I need some sleep.

Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death
Tenacious D - The Pcik Of Destiny :p

bryan bailey 12-25-2006, 10:03 AM +2 on 10,000 days.

Afrokid 12-25-2006, 06:58 PM no question about it, The Mars Volta - Amputechture
sargebaker 12-25-2006, 08:07 PM wow alot of votes for Amputechture. I bought it listened to it 3ish times and forgot about it.... I really didn't think much of it, I guess I gotta give it another try....
flatwounds 12-26-2006, 02:49 AM Modern Times - Bob Dylan
Colour Haze - Tempel
The most amazing band on the planet currently put out probably their best album so far this year. This is objectively good music, if you don't like them I question your sexuality and humanity.
Tool - 10,000 Days
Their worst album ever, but still pretty damn good. Hopefully will age better with time, but I never had a Tool album fall off the radar so quickly.
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
An absolute monster.
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain
The closing suite rules, the rest is highly amazing.
Kayo Dot - Dowsing Anemone With Copper Tongue
I didn't like it at first, but I didn't like their debut much either until it really clicked. It took until seeing them perform some of this material live (with 12 other people in a nearly abandoned warehouse, METHULL) to really appreciate it.
Lots of other good stuff this year, but that was the great.
mvw356 12-26-2006, 03:54 AM David Gilmour, On an island. Wins hands down.
bassist 4 life 12-26-2006, 04:19 AM ^ forgot that one, its a grammy nominee, so is Joe Satrianis album
jenderfazz 12-26-2006, 02:48 PM I'm also surprised at Amputechture's popularity. Granted, it seems like The Mars Volta's tightest album, but I found it to be predictable and repetitive. Not to say it was bad, since I don't dislike it. But every song seemed to have the same formula - odd timings, latin percussion, one melodic guitar and one guitar playing random scales, and Cedric Bixler's spanish wailing.
Then again, I'm probably just one of those annoying fans that loves De-Loused more than anything else :D.
Tool's 10,000 Days did a similar thing for me. After so much wait for a new Tool album, all we got was... a Tool album. It's a great CD but it's pretty much everything we expected.
I guess those are my two best CD releases of 2006 that I don't feel compelled to listen to again ;).
Alan Vorse 12-26-2006, 03:13 PM What I heard of Mars Volta was pretty skull-imploding (in a good way!)
Roots-Game Theory
Dave Holland-Critical Mass
Medeski,Scofield, Martin and Wood-Out Louder
Don W 12-26-2006, 05:40 PM Some of my favorites from 2006 include:
Mastodon - Blood Mountain - Another great album from a band that's quickly becoming one of my favorites.
Cannibal Corpse - Kill - Who would've thought Jack Owen leaving would have been a good thing for this band, but this is the best album they've done in a while.
Deicide - The Stench of Redemption - Who would've thought Jack Owen joining Deicide would have been a good thing for this band. Plus the addition of Ralph Santolla to replace the Hoffman brothers. This is the best album they've done in a long long time and Ralph's solos are amazing on this album
Iron Maiden - A Matter of Life and Death - Bruce's vocals are as strong as ever, I really liked this album.
:edit: I completely forgot one.
Slayer - Christ Illusion - The return of Dave Lombardo was a huge plus for this band, this album kicks serious ass.
agreatheight 12-26-2006, 05:48 PM Tool - 10,000 Days.
tripb19 12-26-2006, 06:22 PM Mastodon - Blood Mountain
This band has breathed life into a tired genre.
caesarbass 12-26-2006, 07:53 PM My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
This album totally threw me off. Some of their emo/pop-sensibilites are still intact, but no doubt, this is a friggin rock album. A theatrical rock opera of sorts, and a pretty cool concept idea to boot. By far my favorite of the year.
+1!!!!
I love this album, the more I listen to it, the more I like it.
Wes D 12-26-2006, 09:45 PM Tool- 10,000 Days, Simply because I was salivating at the prospect of another Tool album since they take forever to churn them out. And it was a solid album.
Silversun Pickups-Carnavas
OK my new favorite band Silversun Pickups, straight up good indie music for me.
sargebaker 12-26-2006, 10:24 PM I totally forgot to check out Medeski Sco, Martin & Wood, I def. need to and I'd probably add it to the list.
jazzbasser535 12-26-2006, 10:29 PM Decemberists - Crane Wife
Bassist4Life 12-27-2006, 12:34 AM The Mars Volta - Amputechture
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Queensryche - Operation: MindCrime II
There really wasn't much this year.
Graeme
I remember when the first MindCrime came out; I was so into it. It was huge! They opened up for Metallica in Rochester, NY. I think it was 1989. Great show! There were some pretty serious Queensryche fans back then. I haven't heard the name "Queensryche" in a very long time. I remember back in '89 I was hanging out in the mall and a guy walked up to me (he was wearing a long black trench coat); he paused for a moment and said, "Mindcrime" in a really creepy voice and then walked away. I don't know who he was or why he did it, but (at the time) it was really cool. I was looking forward to the concert. I remember sitting in the back row of math class and counting down the hours and the minutes until that show.
After the show was over, there was this guy out in the street that dropped to his knees and screamed "Metallica!!!!". After that, he passed out. It was like a scene from the movie Platoon. Amazing show! I'll never forget it. It was in the paper as the loudest show ever performed at the War Memorial (at that time). Jason's bass solo make a metal Wendy's sign on the wall begin to crumble. I've never seen (or felt) anything like it. I remember trying to stuff Starburst wrapers in my ears during Kirk's guitar solo. I was deaf for a week!
Oh yea... Favorite CD of 2006:
Mark Egan: As We Speak (I really dig that fretless Pedulla of his).
Joe
Wes D 12-27-2006, 12:58 AM Decemberists - Crane Wife
WOOT! My hometown Portland Heroes!
Ya that was a good album I forgot about it, even though there are some serious Decemberists haters out there...:crying:

mars volta - amputechture
stereolab - fab four suture
RHCP - stadium arcadium
neko case - fox confessor brings the flood
aterciopelados - oye
julieta venegas - limon y sal (which i can't stop playing)
that's all i can think of now...
edit: ooo, i forgot:
don caballero: world class listening problem
gustavo cerati: ahi vamos
Tortuga 12-29-2006, 02:38 PM it was a pretty slow year for me recordwise , i had really high expectations for amputecture, but i really think it's their weakest record they're ever made, its just boring, and its like a sad attempt at fusion, it was much better live however. Blood Mountain was pretty good, and is definitely the top metal record of the year .
But the only record i was into that nobody said anything about was St. Elsewhere, its a solid record, and straight to the point, and it has a cool old school motown vibe about it that i like.
iamlowsound 12-29-2006, 04:19 PM RHCP - SA
What can I say about it, they combined everything they have ever done into one massively amazing cd.
mewithoutyou - brother, sister
I had always avoided them because of the extremely emo sounding name. Then my roommate bought this cd and started playing it all the time, I was hooked. Melodic, tight, great bass lines, the spoken lyric poems grab the listeners attention and doesn't let go. Twisted through the cd lies some of the best guitar, bass and lyric work that I have heard in a long time. This is an art cd if there ever was one. If they were more well known, I am sure they would be getting several grammy nominations.

hbarcat 12-29-2006, 04:32 PM Tool - 10,000 Days
I'm going to go against the grain on this one and say that I've always been lukewarm on Tool's albums in the past, but this one really grabbed me. I listen to it often, and always from begining to end. The complex time signatures blow me away.
Jeff Moote 12-29-2006, 04:51 PM Decemberists - The Crane Wife
Definitely my top pick. I saw them live last month and they were great
christobass 416 12-29-2006, 05:01 PM I didn't buy many new releases this year, so here's everything I can remember buying:
McGill/Manring/Stevens -What We Do
Les Claypool - Of Whales And Woe
Neil Young - Living With War
Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam
Tool - 10,000 days
The only album I was disappointed with was Tool's. I've always really liked Tool, but their last effort seemed to be mostly filler.
Twistad 12-30-2006, 12:22 AM Orphans - Tom Waits
I can't believe no one said it yet
SuperSnake2012 12-30-2006, 01:11 AM Mastodon - Blood Mountain
An absolute monster.
+1, this is an amazing album. Any fan of metal should really check out this band. Levianthan was f'in awesome too.
hbarcat 12-30-2006, 01:51 AM I just got MASTODON - "Blood Mountain" and heard it for the first time today.
I predict it's going to be in my CD player a lot in the near future.
steamthief 12-30-2006, 01:27 PM Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere - Sounds like nothing else, and that's a good thing.
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever PSIA,TWIN - I dig the energy, rawness, and rather cool lyrics from a bunch of kids barely out of high school.
Wolfmother - debut - Yeah, I know, derivative as heck, but these guys rock, plain and simple.
Various Artists - What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves - Although this last compendium isn't new music, per se, Rhino released four discs full of body-moving goodness. Many cool basslines within, and most will probably be new to you. If you dig late 60's-mid 70's funk, this definitely deserves a few spins.
El-Bob 12-30-2006, 01:34 PM Dream Theater - Score
Slayer - Christ Illusion
Planet Boulder 12-30-2006, 07:08 PM My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
This album totally threw me off. Some of their emo/pop-sensibilites are still intact, but no doubt, this is a friggin rock album. A theatrical rock opera of sorts, and a pretty cool concept idea to boot. By far my favorite of the year.
I actually picked this up today based upon your recommendation. I had never listened to this band before (and it's not normally my cup o' gin), but I like this CD.
Thanks for the recommendation!
velvetkevorkian 12-30-2006, 10:20 PM Probably "The New Black" by Strapping Young Lad, although to be honest there's been a bit of a lack of inspiration this year for me. All the ones I wanted to name were from 2005 :hmm:
SlavaF 12-31-2006, 02:25 AM Dream Theater - SCORE
I liked this one so much, I picked up both the DVD and the CD's, and I've never done that with any other live recording... still listening to it months later.
Tool - 10,000 Days
Some great songs on here, and it's my personal favorite Tool album ever. I seemed to get tired of all their other albums real fast, not the case with this one...
Army Of Anyone - self titled
Nothing ground breaking, but some solid rock songs with great vocals. I really enjoy the opening track.
Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life And Death
I thought this was their best album in 2 decades - amazing song-writing combined with some great riffs and killer vocals. "For The Greater Good Of God" still kicks my ass every time I listen to it!
magnustick 12-31-2006, 04:17 AM Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
Tom Waits - Orpheans
Tool - 10,000 Days
