Hey, iwas wondering what strings you could recomend for a tribute l2500? My tone was kinda deadish and didnt have any characteristics, and spideyjg said it might be cause of the stock strings, so i guess ill try some new ones. So what can you recomend? Also, since the l2500 can have strings through body and through bridge, will it affect my string purchase cos of length?

D'Addarios!

I string through the bridge on the B and the E and thru the body on the rest. It sounds GREAT.

Arent there alot of D'Addarios:)?

Also, i thought going through body needed longer strings. But doesnt through body make them tighter and give more tension? Shouldnt it be the other way around then? E and B through body:P?

D'Addario XL's. And no, tension will not change. Feel does. But the taper at the end of the string does no go past the nut when you are using it's extra length going through the body. That's why I do it that way, and it sounds great!

Ok, whats the difference in feel between through body and through bridge?
EDIT: Cant find any DRs around here:( So, D'Addarios it is i guess, unless someone comes with something better:P

If you want to string through the body on all strings you'll need the super long set like these....
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/DAddario-EXL1705SL-5String-Bass-Strings?sku=100268
If you string through the bridge you can use the regular long scale ones. BUT you might want to check out the thread about the bridge getting pulled off someone's Tribute model when the strung through the bridge. I'll do a search ad see if I can find it.
BTW I use the D'Addarios and love them on my G&L L1505 and L2500 (or at least I will when it gets here)

That sounds scary:P Ill go through body. Only problem is ill have to convince my dad to get them, since they cost 80bucks here and i already owe him about that much:/

The pulling out thing worried me, too. I may look into modifying my bridge to have bolts on the baseplate... That is mostly why I decided to put the A, D, and G through the body. That, and the taper of the strings doesn't sit above the nut when the B and the E are through the body. But I LOVE the tone of those strings, so they are totally worth it.

Wow, 80 bucks? I don't know the exchange rate, but I pay about 15 bucks locally.

Get the superlong ones. They're worth the extra money.
Also I didn't think the stock SIT's were all that bad.

An ibanez GWB35 costs about 1600 dollars here, while in the US its around 500-700:P Just as an example-.-

Wow, that kinda sucks. Well, maybe you can do the alcohol string washing I do to save money. It works quite well. You guys using the Kronor there?

Demon

Svenska Kronor, yeah. But you sure washing them will help? I got the bass a few days ago:P

Some basses just come with dead strings. Denatured Alcohol, or methylated spirits are a good way to clean them. I generally soak them for a few days and they come out nice and bright and clean. Just watch out, the stuff is flammable (obviously...).

Demon

Will try that. Do i just fill a bucket with the alcohol and put the strings in and leave them about 3-4 days?

Trevorus
12-26-2006, 04:41 PM
Not a bucket, just a plastic food container, one that can handle alcohol without damage. One with a lid, because alcohol evaporates easily.

not sure i have a food container. What else can be used?

Well, my personal faves are Ken Smith RockMaster Mediums. I string the B through the bridge and the rest through the body. Didn't have an issue with my old L-1505.

They start pretty bright, but mellow very well, retaining their punch!

I'm sure if you go to a local grocery store, you can find a little container pretty cheap.

The bass may have been sitting on the shelf for a while, hence the dead strings. SIT's are what come on it and they're pretty dang good. I use DR strings exclusively and love those on my USA L2500. They also last forever! Whatever you do, don't get GHS Boomers. The silk winding ends up sitting on the nut if you string through the body.

I use DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams on my G&L L2500 and I love them. I have not come across a set of strings I like better.
Ernie Ball, Rotosounds, Smiths. None of them compare to the tone I get with the Fat Beams.
Somtimes I use the DR Hi Beams if I cannot find a 5 string set of Fat Beams.

I'm going to try the fat beams next time. What's the big difference between those and the hi beams?

Honestly there is not a big, big difference, the Hi Beams are a bit brighter. I prefer the Marcus Signature Fat Beams though. Just like the response they give. And they seem to have a certain boom to them that the others don't. The Lo Riders are similar as well. It can sometimes be tough to find the Fat Beam 5 string sets. I run into that a lot. Where the Hi Beams or the Lo Riders seem to be in stock more in 5 String sets.

You can use those, but you'll have to string the B and E through the bridge. Trevorus here at talkbass does it that way I saw his tribute L2500 over the weekend. They are nice basses. If you want to string all the strings through the body you'll need the superlong D'addarios.

Demon
01-30-2007, 05:56 PM
Mah, dont really care if its body or not, i was just worried about the bridge ripping out of the body;) Doubt itll happen with the low b and e only, since they have least tension^^ But those strings should sound good right =)?

yes, I use D'addarios on both my G&L's and I think they sound great.

I liked F-Bass strings best for that bass when I had one....I think they are made by LaBella but are branded as F-bass and avail from their site. They have a contact core so you might have to adjust the bass. I liked them because they had the best tension out of any I tried IMO (fairly low to med tension) so easy and comfy to play for me.

I use a pvc pipe "string cleaning tube" ala this link. It works AWESOME. I have used the same 3 sets of strings for about 8-9 months now , rotating sets and I always get that new string sound on the cheap. Can't recommend these enough!

I've found two sets that can be strung "through the body" on the L-2500 with no problem.
1. Rotosound RS665EL
2. S.I.T. NR545125XL
These are $29.95 and $18.83 respectively through JustStrings.com

There may be others that fit when routing through the body, but these are the two sets that I've found that really sound good on this bass. Oh yeah, the .130 gauge B string on the RotoSounds is almost impossible to set the intonation on. The original bridge screw isn't long enough. The S.I.T's though, with a .125 B string, will intonate perfectly.

Good Luck!
