Feel free to trash talk and/or give praise. I WANNA HEAR IT ALL! velvetkevorkian 12-30-2006, 03:44 PM The "Irony Is A Dead Scene" EP with Mike Patton is really good, especially the genius Aphex Twin cover. ric1312 12-30-2006, 04:11 PM Listened/watched vids of them before through talkbass links. Sorry, but if the singer sucks so bad he has no business behind a mic I won't even bother listening to the rest of the band. screaming and grunting constantly isn't skilled or talented it doesn't show more emotion/intensity, it's just an excuse for vocalists with absolutely no skill to get on stage. You can still be full on heavy with a good singer. You can scream with tone and sound good. Wise up kiddies, if your singer sucks, your band sucks by default. Trash talk me back on this all you want. But the biggest rock/metal acts that stand the test of time have good singers. Embryodead 12-30-2006, 04:13 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWtiGLRG1pU if you think all DEP can do is scream and grunt. Also check out the nice bass line. ric1312 12-30-2006, 04:21 PM Like I said have only listened to them on vids here. But the only good vocal part of that song sounds like it was done by mike patton, (correct me if I'm wrong never heard the song before) the rest of the vocal isn't worthy of the music IMO. Which brings up another subject about vocals. The quality of the studio compared to live, especially for the heavy stuff is sometimes unforgiveable. Some times when I hear the live vocal compared the sweetened up studio version it makes me hate the band for being a bunch of phonies. couple of bands I can't stand because of this: Def tones: This vocalist sound like total horse crap live. Not that it's awesome on the CD, but cmon how can he screw up such a weak vocal live. Saw them in a live thing in Hawaii on TV, OMG I can't believe any one would listen to that crap. I forget the name of the band right now, it's the band where most of the members are Latino and one of their big hits is "Satellite." Again how can you f up vocal thats crap to begin with live. Half the time he's rapping anyways and when he tries to sing his tone is wooden and flat. Stained: this guy used to sound good but he just lost it. I know I know, I sound like a one of those critic types who hate everything and can't find anything good in anything. But, the reason it gets me so mad is that I love rock and metal, but it seems like most the bands now a days don't even consider trying to get a good vocalist, just fix it in the studio, and fool everyone in believing they are an act worth listening too. Then I feel tricked when after I bought the cd, then see them live and find out they can't even play their own song. then they wonder why rock/metal doesn't get taken seriously by a lot of people. How the F can you not sing a song you wrote, well. Tortuga 12-30-2006, 07:52 PM no offense, but guttural singing does take talent. for example, you try and do it right now, unless your really lucky, your not gonna be able to get above a whisper. Then try to bring it up to volume, youll probablly start choking, and your throat will hurt like hell, now just imagine going on tour singing like that , night after night. Also in most modern metal, i think trying to put a bruce dickenson, or any other type of singing style similar, would make it sound too cheesey (enter dragonforce). Even though its not convential singing, it does require talent, and not everyone can do it, sure you can scream, but you probably dont sound like any of the guys you have heard doing it. not trying to flame you or anything, so please dont take it that way ALiP BoB 12-30-2006, 08:44 PM The band is so technical that I feel that I need to be smart to appreciate it ya know... I usually love Metalcore bands like AILD and such but this, I am ashamed to admit that I'm not ready for it yet. ALiP BoB 12-30-2006, 08:45 PM I forget the name of the band right now, it's the band where most of the members are Latino and one of their big hits is "Satellite." P.O.D CHILDISHGAMBINO 12-30-2006, 08:51 PM I have "Miss Machine" and it's one of my favorite albums. After a owning for almost a year and a half I still listen to it about once a month. The vocalist screams a lot but I really like it. When he sings he sounds a bit(ok quite a bit)like Mike Patton but how is that a bad thing? A lot of Mike Patton's more recent stuff is mostly screaming. Screaming ain't everyone's cup o tea. Maybe it doesn't require the same amount of talent to do it but to do it well takes skill and I think The Dillinger Escape Plan kick ass. 43% burnt 12-30-2006, 09:09 PM I think they're pretty super. ALiP BoB 12-30-2006, 09:13 PM I think they're pretty super. I can tell by your TB name.:smug: metalguy2 12-30-2006, 09:42 PM Yea... Personally I fell in love with the band in freshman year of highschool. I can't wait until their new album. ric1312 12-30-2006, 10:13 PM no offense, but guttural singing does take talent. for example, you try and do it right now, unless your really lucky, your not gonna be able to get above a whisper. But the vast majority of them should have beer bottles chucked at them. But, those I've heard are few and far between most just sound like bad cookie monster impersonations. I like maiden and those types of singers but not my favorites you can still sing and not hit the 80's like high notes and still be metal. My favs for metal would be the guy from anthrax and disturbed or even some slipknot, or BLS. I don't mind some screaming as long as there is some tone and melody to the voice somewhere. Metal is still music it should have some melody to it. you have to admit though a lot of metal bands just straight out scream/grunt because of lack of any ability to do anything else. P.S. I can and have done the grunting/screamo thing in the past very well, I just don't like it and think its very unmusical when it's done all by it'self. And even when done right doesn't sound very good. I find it just annoying. A singer with even basic skills can grunt just as well most of the grunters out their because they know how to back off. The people who choke or get sore throats are the ones who are guilty of doing it badly, and singing from the throat, and sadly they are the majority of this type of vocalist. metalguy2 01-01-2007, 02:33 PM I am not sure if the singer was ever trying to be talented. They pretty much like to make music that sounds cool as all hell.. They have achieved that with flying colors. 43% burnt 01-01-2007, 05:01 PM Some DEP vids... I think the new singer is great. His joining really let them take thier music to a different level, incorporating their insane math-metal with some really intersting melodic elements.
