One possibility might be to have the attendees post the gear they're willing to bring, and then have other people mention what they're interested in trying out.

Another thing I can do is bring my Bass Buddy and a pair of decent over-the-ear headphones. It would allow someone to check out a bass while someone else wails away through a rig.

That place was perfect, Charlie! Pretty nice sized stage, and a full bar. What more can you ask for? Sunday afternoons are made for GTGs! :bassist:

Say what? I spend more time on TB than housekeeping. This place is a wreck. Lots of room, though, and we can play as loud as we want. Hmmmmm. :hmm:

I wasn't at the last one, so I can't say anything about "there being too much gear", but if that was the case I think the idea of having a comprehensive list of all the gear that everyone's willing to bring would be a great idea.

Heh, well...you already have the CA9, and the rest of us at the last GTG were mainly geezers and thus arguably more likely to buy lightweights I think;). And I think comparing preamps is a lot more interesting, personally. But in any case, there definitely wasn't enough time. Maybe you and I can do a preliminary test and see if taking it further is even gonna be worthwhile? We could use your NV-610 and something smaller and more representative of what I use with my PLX? That way we'd both get results that are directly meaningful to us.

On my last gig I used an AccuGroove Tri112L and an EA CxL-112 in stereo, with my PLX1804. Those might work fine for stereo 8 ohm testing I guess. I also have a Schro 21012 now that's a possibility for bridged testing.

Subtle preamp you say? If I can make this one I'll most definitely be bringing my rack which does in fact contain an Avalon U5. Turn the preset filters off and you've got about as transparent of a preamp as you can find.

Maybe if I make it to this one someone can diagnose why my jazz bass buzzes the way it does :(

Now you're getting berry scientific. I think you're on to something. Although, this won't be as fun as playing all the killer axes that showed up last time. :crying: But I like the way this is shaping up as far as consentrating on one piece of gear, remove as many variables as possible and then add them back in one at a time (pre, bass, player, beer). :eek:

I was talking to my fiance about another place the GTG could be held, that all ages could attend, and she suggested the elementary school gym that she teaches at (in SE Portland).

We could do it on either a saturday or sunday, could have it all day, but its big (they have a stage as well, with some sort of pa system, but nothing like a club) and sounds like a gym, we'll have to bring plenty of powerstrips and electrical cords, and theres no beer there. I'm personally a big fan of the small toilets they have there, they make me feel so tall. Let me know what y'all think.

Wow. I step out for a while to take my daughter to the hospital for a few days and quite a bit transpires.

Personally, I don't really care much for a poweramp shootout, for two reasons: 1) I use an IP310, so the results don't mean much to me personally, and 2) I think the variability between power amps is much less pronounced and interesting than either preamps or cabs. However, I've got no problem offering up unsolicited opinions on tone if everyone else wants to do a shootout. :p I'll go with the flow.

I'm happy to go most places for a GTG. Seattle is a little far, though my wife has family there and one of my best buddies lives there, too. Hood River was a great venue, and Portland is even closer.

As for gear, I just got a new (to me) Reverend BH5, and had single coils put in my Sadowsky, which now sounds even better (also lowered the action). I'm always willing to schlep my Bergantino, too. Passinwind is still puzzling over a problem with my Brunetti. No power amps, though -- there's no way to power another cab with the IP310's power amp.

If someone else doesn't step up soon, I'll be happy to set up something at the same place in Hood River. It'd still have to be 21-and-over, and most any Sunday could work. Start throwing dates out guys. March 25th is the only Sunday I have a gig booked for right now.

We can still use the gym @ Kerri's school. That way it would be all ages.
We just need to decide on a location and date.

I won't be around the last week of march, I have to fly to Boston with Kerri for wedding stuff.
Her mom kinda freaked when she found out we got an openly gay unitarian minister.

Either place is probably OK. I really liked the place in Hood River (lots of room, decent acoustics), but I respect the fact that having it there would prohibit the younguns from showing up. Then again, beer + gear is a good combination. ;)

The only Sundays I wouldn't be able to come are the first one in March unless we did it early (scuba class that night) and the last one in April (Cozumel trip). :)

Pros: Great stage, plenty of room, can play good and loud, good beer. Folks who stay late may be able to jam there.

Cons: It's a ways from Seattle, and an hour from Portland, and I'm pretty sure you have to be 21.

Cons: It's a bit of an unknown. Acoustics? Power? Acceptability of having a bunch of bass-crazy buzzards descending on the place? Also, no beer.

Its good sized and has a smaller stage. It has some interesting echo up in the beams, but not as much reverb as my high school gym (just for reference).

I expected more reverb and less echo, but I got more echo and less reverd when I clapped and yelled and stomped my little feet and little legs. Soundwise its not great, but it is age friendly.

Not yet. Actually, bassed on another thread in the Amps section, I got the great suggestion to try an ART mic tube pre with my Clarus. Wow, tight tubey warmness and I still have the light weight rig. :hyper: Not exactly what I'm looking for but really close. Still need to work in an EQ of some sort. However, I haven't given up the Demeter. But I can wait a little more until BassNW sells some of my older stuff on consignment.

April 21 still looks good on my calendar.

So heres the deal.

Everything is all set for the gym. The only problem is that there are only 2 outlets (I didn't think to look when I was originally there).
Now we could either use extension cords, or we also have a second option:

Using a class room and the library next to it. We'd have to move some desks and tables around, but there are more outlets and the sound would be better than the gym. Having two rooms could also break everything up nicely.

Have you ever used the MIDI output on that bass? Did you include it assuming you would get more MIDI gear in the future, or what's the deal?

Haven't used it yet. I definitely plan on getting the gear and using it in the future. It just isn't a priority for me. The Axon setup I'd like to get is pretty expensive ($700) and I need to get a good amp rig going first.

Rock. Should be a good time then. The band really enjoys playing at this place and seems to get a decent crowd considering its in Boring. That and the wait staff and owner are wicked awesome kid. I have a couch/futon for people to sleep on afterwards as well, if you don't mind a couple cats.
