Unfortunately, I was out of the area during the last GTG, but would love to get together with you all if you're of a mind to. Anyone interested in doing another, perhaps in the Feb/Mar timeframe?

Anyone interested in doing another, perhaps in the Feb/Mar timeframe? 4Mal 01-03-2007, 09:54 AM I'm pretty much out Sundays until after ski season. If there were a mid week evening venue I'd be in ... BartmanPDX 01-03-2007, 10:15 AM I'd definitely be interested, but April might work better than Feb/March. The last one was heaps of fun, though there was too much gear to really get to experience but a small taste of what people have here. Passinwind 01-03-2007, 12:13 PM The last one was heaps of fun, though there was too much gear to really get to experience but a small taste of what people have here. I'm all ears on suggestions on how to improve on that. If the demand is there, I can definitely get the same venue again. The management was very supportive, plus they perpetually owe me for various technical favors. Saturdays are a possibility as well as Sundays, and we could maybe get one or two bands featuring Talkbassers to play the venue after the GTG on a Saturday. I can't really see it working well as anything but a daytime deal on a weekend out here due to driving distances for most attendees? BartmanPDX 01-04-2007, 01:59 AM I'm all ears on suggestions on how to improve on that. One possibility might be to have the attendees post the gear they're willing to bring, and then have other people mention what they're interested in trying out. Another thing I can do is bring my Bass Buddy and a pair of decent over-the-ear headphones. It would allow someone to check out a bass while someone else wails away through a rig. That place was perfect, Charlie! Pretty nice sized stage, and a full bar. What more can you ask for? Sunday afternoons are made for GTGs! :bassist: I'm just hoping my Brunetti will be up and running once again. :hiding: arbitrary 01-04-2007, 02:48 AM As long as I can play as loud as I want, all the time, then I don't have a problem going (I can bring all 5 of my distortion pedals!!!)... Maybe I can get someone to buy my Alembic pre (Its official, I'm selling it)... Maybe I can play that beautiful Read preamp...again. I'd lug my nv610 just to play through that damn pre for 5 minutes... Maybe we can do that poweramp shootout like we wanted the first time around... I think the venue was cool. We could also set some stuff up around the club as well and not limit ourselves to solely the stage... I think that we would need twice as much time as last time though... I could try and get the cover band I'm in to come out and play the night (talkbassers could sit it), but they'd want to get paid like a gig and stuff, so that might not work so well, but at least we got our demo recording and press/promo kit all done now. I thought Charlie and Mal knew some musicians around that area and we could just have like a jam thing. Maybe just play Impressions or Take 5 for like 10 hours straight. Bart has a house with like more than one room, so I'd like to offer/nominate his house for a gtg. We can send his wife and daughter to my place and they can hang out w/my fiance... :) It might be a VERY long shot, but maybe Fearless Guitars. Bart, you talk to Chance about this, he likes you more. I'm game however it turns up, just don't do it in late July, I'm getting married then, and I keep getting reminded not to miss it. brothernewt 01-04-2007, 10:35 AM I missed the last but I'd be in if it lands on a day I don't have to work... although, it's just work, I might even be into a sick day for it! BartmanPDX 01-04-2007, 11:32 AM As long as I can play as loud as I want, all the time, then I don't have a problem going (I can bring all 5 of my distortion pedals!!!)... Sure, why not? No better way to evaluate gear than to have someone wailing away with distortion only a few feet away. Heck, we can have it at a local GC just for kicks! Maybe I can get someone to buy my Alembic pre (Its official, I'm selling it)... You're not selling it to me, says my wife. :) Maybe I can play that beautiful Read preamp...again. I'd lug my nv610 just to play through that damn pre for 5 minutes... Heck, I'd lug your NV610 just to A/B the Read with my Brunetti. Maybe we can do that poweramp shootout like we wanted the first time around... Wha? :p I think the venue was cool. We could also set some stuff up around the club as well and not limit ourselves to solely the stage... Why just the club? Let's spill out onto the streets and rock ALL of Hood River! ;) I think that we would need twice as much time as last time though... No argument here. I spend more time on TB than housekeeping. This place is a wreck. Lots of room, though, and we can play as loud as we want. Hmmmmm. :hmm: I think my wife would NOT be happy, though. Between our daughter and working 60+ hours a week, she's pretty wiped. River City is probably a much better place. It might be a VERY long shot, but maybe Fearless Guitars. Bart, you talk to Chance about this, he likes you more. Sure, 'cause my wife bought me a Bergie IP from him. ;) Fearless is a cool place, but it's pretty small. Always some unusual bass gear, though. I'm game however it turns up, just don't do it in late July, I'm getting married then, and I keep getting reminded not to miss it. Where are your priorities, dude? Sheesh. arbitrary 01-06-2007, 02:32 PM I've thought about it and cannot think of a different place. Anyone a member of the free masons? Don't they have lodges or something? Wheres Jack the Ripper when you need him? neptoon 01-06-2007, 03:07 PM crap, when was there a NW bass get together?? i missed it, i'm guessin' :( barthanatos 01-06-2007, 03:48 PM Yeah, the last one was in/near Portland, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, it happened while I was out of town and I missed it. But I'll do anything I can to make the next one! neptoon 01-06-2007, 06:06 PM heck, i would've rolled down to portland...you could've ridden with...there would've been room for that enormous accugroove rig :D avid 01-06-2007, 09:10 PM I plan on making this one. With dates planned well in advance I can put it on the family calendar. Maybe we can do that poweramp shootout like we wanted the first time around... Wonder if there is any chance we could rent/borrow/steal an ABX comparator for this. I would love to see how it really works out, live. scottice 01-06-2007, 09:19 PM I'm a total noob... but I'd love to attend and meet y'all. Sounds like fun! Guiseppe 01-06-2007, 09:19 PM ...I'm up for bringing my SVP1600 for comparison against everybody's rigs... fish slapper 01-06-2007, 10:58 PM Had a blast last time. Agree that there was too much gear to try everything. barthanatos 01-06-2007, 11:37 PM heck, i would've rolled down to portland...you could've ridden with...there would've been room for that enormous accugroove rig :D Would've been happy to, but I was visiting my fiance in Texas and the GTG got planned after I'd bought my airline ticket! neptoon 01-07-2007, 07:46 AM doh! barthanatos 01-07-2007, 09:49 AM Ah, it's all good. I've got quite a few more toys to bring than I did when the last one went down... :D silky smoove 01-07-2007, 11:47 AM I have way more of a chance of making this one than the last one. Ski season is usually a little busy for me, so the further out this thing is the better. I wasn't at the last one, so I can't say anything about "there being too much gear", but if that was the case I think the idea of having a comprehensive list of all the gear that everyone's willing to bring would be a great idea. fish slapper 01-07-2007, 11:58 AM Sorry, I realize I might have said that like it was a bad thing. Just wanted to point out that there was lots of goodies to play with and I want a second crack at it!:hyper: And I'd like to get another opportunity to learn about rack systems from you guys. Still haven't had the nerve to pull the trigger on a seperate pre/power deal.:crying: Lokire 01-08-2007, 12:02 AM NW GTG you say? hmm...indeed :bassist: Passinwind 01-08-2007, 12:36 AM Wonder if there is any chance we could rent/borrow/steal an ABX comparator for this. I would love to see how it really works out, live. I did borrow one from Bob Lee for the last GTG,which never even got out of the box. I'll talk to Bob and see if we can make it work this time. But if not, I can still do accurate gain matching, power testing, and a less controlled test protocol if the demand is there. arbitrary 01-08-2007, 03:28 AM I'll take the responsibility for stearing attention towards preamps and not poweramps. Just wasn't enough time... Still am damn curious though to compare poweramps...which cab would work best for this? Still am damn curious though to compare poweramps...which cab would work best for this? Heh, well...you already have the CA9, and the rest of us at the last GTG were mainly geezers and thus arguably more likely to buy lightweights I think;). And I think comparing preamps is a lot more interesting, personally. But in any case, there definitely wasn't enough time. Maybe you and I can do a preliminary test and see if taking it further is even gonna be worthwhile? We could use your NV-610 and something smaller and more representative of what I use with my PLX? That way we'd both get results that are directly meaningful to us. avid 01-08-2007, 10:57 AM I did borrow one from Bob Lee for the last GTG,which never even got out of the box. I'll talk to Bob and see if we can make it work this time. But if not, I can still do accurate gain matching, power testing, and a less controlled test protocol if the demand is there. Wow, I see there is a CA9 and QSC PLX poweramp available and no doubt a Crest and Stewart World. I think we need to try it out for all of TB just not the NW guys. I am a bass noob but if there is anything I could do to help make it happen; I would be all over it. PluperfectArson 01-08-2007, 11:56 AM Hey, arbitrary notified me regarding this GTG. I would enjoy participating this time because I wasn't able to the last time this happened, for the 21+ age limit left me in the dust. :( It is good to see more Oregonians on here, though. :) fish slapper 01-08-2007, 12:56 PM ...the rest of us at the last GTG were mainly geezers and thus arguably more likely to buy lightweights I think;). Amen to that! :crying: Biggest obsticle for me in a rack head. But my Jazz head is an AI Clarus. Hard to beat 4 lbs.:hiding: Passinwind 01-08-2007, 01:08 PM Wow, I see there is a CA9 and QSC PLX poweramp available and no doubt a Crest and Stewart World. The club we did the last GTG at already has a Crown K2, PLX 1802, and a few Carvin DCMs in their rack too. But this could turn into an all day affair in its own right pretty easily. I'd really like to bench test the various amps as well, but maybe I could do most of that on an earlier day. arbitrary 01-08-2007, 02:05 PM I would enjoy participating this time because I wasn't able to the last time this happened, for the 21+ age limit left me in the dust. :( We're still not solid on a location for this time out, any ideas are more than welcome. Hopefeull you can make it to this one. We could use your NV-610 and something smaller and more representative of what I use with my PLX? That way we'd both get results that are directly meaningful to us. I was thinking that a smaller cab would be great to use as well, that doesnt have the same characteristics as the nv610. Passinwind 01-08-2007, 02:12 PM We're still not solid on a location for this time out, any ideas are more than welcome. Hopefully you can make it to this one. I'm fine with going to Portland or wherever if we want to try to make this all-ages. The club we used last time will always require 21 and over though. I was thinking that a smaller cab would be great to use as well, that isn't sealed and what not like the nv610. On my last gig I used an AccuGroove Tri112L and an EA CxL-112 in stereo, with my PLX1804. Those might work fine for stereo 8 ohm testing I guess. I also have a Schro 21012 now that's a possibility for bridged testing. arbitrary 01-08-2007, 03:04 PM How would we test the poweramps? Bass---> preamp---> poweramp---> cab? If thats the case, a subtle preamp would probably work best, or maybe try a few different ones. Would a DI instead of a preamp work? silky smoove 01-08-2007, 03:31 PM Subtle preamp you say? If I can make this one I'll most definitely be bringing my rack which does in fact contain an Avalon U5. Turn the preset filters off and you've got about as transparent of a preamp as you can find. Maybe if I make it to this one someone can diagnose why my jazz bass buzzes the way it does :( To be honest I'm not hopeful... Thus far, 3 technicians, and 2 electrical engineers are baffled Passinwind 01-08-2007, 06:07 PM How would we test the poweramps? Bass---> preamp---> poweramp---> cab? If thats the case, a subtle preamp would probably work best, or maybe try a few different ones. Would a DI instead of a preamp work? I'd start with a high quality, non compressed recording and a good mixing board, since we're talking amps primarily intended for PA. I have a pretty nice Crest XR-20 board I can bring. If that doesn't drive something adequately, that something is defective. If we hear differences, we're done. If not, we can move along to real-world bass gear and see what we get. The more the better, in terms of learning what's up. fish slapper 01-08-2007, 08:05 PM I'd start with a high quality, non compressed recording and a good mixing board, since we're talking amps primarily intended for PA. Although, this won't be as fun as playing all the killer axes that showed up last time. :crying: But I like the way this is shaping up as far as consentrating on one piece of gear, remove as many variables as possible and then add them back in one at a time (pre, bass, player, beer). arbitrary 01-08-2007, 10:00 PM I was talking to my fiance about another place the GTG could be held, that all ages could attend, and she suggested the elementary school gym that she teaches at (in SE Portland). We could do it on either a saturday or sunday, could have it all day, but its big (they have a stage as well, with some sort of pa system, but nothing like a club) and sounds like a gym, we'll have to bring plenty of powerstrips and electrical cords, and theres no beer there. I'm personally a big fan of the small toilets they have there, they make me feel so tall. Let me know what y'all think. Passinwind 01-08-2007, 11:45 PM Let me know what y'all think. The SE side of PDX is great by me anytime. How about if we do both? Amp shootout/jam in Hood River ASAP, then full tilt all-ages gear fest in Portland in a month or three? Eric, PM me if you want me to shop your demo out here. Things start filling up pretty fast in the next month or two. arbitrary 01-09-2007, 12:05 AM The SE side of PDX is great by me anytime. How about if we do both? Amp shootout/jam in Hood River ASAP, then full tilt all-ages gear fest in Portland in a month or three? That could work nicely, maybe have a nightly jam. What do the rest of you people say to two GTG? Eric, PM me if you want me to shop your demo out here. Things start filling up pretty fast in the next month or two. Thanks man. I just emailed the band and I'll let you know asap. I could mail some promo packs out to you. The demo we got is @ http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=114114183 for curiousities sake. barthanatos 01-09-2007, 01:43 AM Let me know what y'all think. I'm up for anything that happens after this weekend (I'll be out of town), and is on a Saturday. Some Sundays would work for me too. silky smoove 01-09-2007, 04:53 PM Portland starts getting to be a bit of a long-haul for me... although Hood River isn't exactly a stones throw away either. I could likely swing it either way, so just keep me posted guys ;) Spfairchild 01-09-2007, 05:27 PM Puget Sound area! Seattle! Passinwind 01-09-2007, 05:38 PM Puget Sound area! Seattle! Get on it! If you get a nice venue I'll be more than happy to do the drive. Spfairchild 01-09-2007, 06:06 PM Hmm, wonder if anyone could convince the Bass NW guys to let out their space... I'd have to think awhile on where it could be. Any fellow Seattlites out there with ideas? Angus 01-09-2007, 07:13 PM If it was in March during spring break I'd offer up my house for a GTG in suburbs of Seattle. Plenty of space! Unfortunately, though, I have a feeling it'll happen earlier than that. I've missed the last like 5! 4Mal 01-09-2007, 10:06 PM I need to talk with Kurt down at Brownell in Clackamas.. Maybe he'll open up some space for us on a Saturday. Not the biggest place since he downsized but he know about every venue in Stumptown so he might have a recommendation or two. I also want to hear his new 15, 10 & tweet killer cab... for those of you that don't know Kurt - he's a monster bassist in the R&B vein and owns Brownell Sound. PWV from Seattle is in Portland sometime mid-February. If nothing else, the local contingent ought to make to the Rock Bottom or Lucky Labrador and make it an evening of '*bassists behaving badly'. I'll make the trek in and Passinwind will no doubt offer to co-pilot ... (*woo hoo - look at me - I'm draggin' the beat. Take that Mr Drummer ...) BartmanPDX 01-09-2007, 11:54 PM Wow. I step out for a while to take my daughter to the hospital for a few days and quite a bit transpires. Personally, I don't really care much for a poweramp shootout, for two reasons: 1) I use an IP310, so the results don't mean much to me personally, and 2) I think the variability between power amps is much less pronounced and interesting than either preamps or cabs. However, I've got no problem offering up unsolicited opinions on tone if everyone else wants to do a shootout. :p I'll go with the flow. I'm happy to go most places for a GTG. Seattle is a little far, though my wife has family there and one of my best buddies lives there, too. Hood River was a great venue, and Portland is even closer. As for gear, I just got a new (to me) Reverend BH5, and had single coils put in my Sadowsky, which now sounds even better (also lowered the action). I'm always willing to schlep my Bergantino, too. Passinwind is still puzzling over a problem with my Brunetti. No power amps, though -- there's no way to power another cab with the IP310's power amp. Passinwind 01-10-2007, 01:32 AM there's no way to power another cab with the IP310's power amp. Ermmm...maybe not the one that's in your IP, bro! I do it all the time though:cool: I'm leaning towards doing the power amp thing in the next couple of weeks. I have some sound guys who are interested, and I'll just invite any of you who want to to come check it out too. We can maybe do a mini-GTG and jam afterwards if it's on a Sunday, I just have to schedule around the football playoffs at this time of the year. I'm probably going to NAMM next weekend too. arbitrary 01-10-2007, 01:39 AM If you don't have one already lined up, I can bring my ca9. Just let me know. Passinwind 01-10-2007, 01:43 AM If you don't have one already lined up, I can bring my ca9. Just let me know. I'm counting on that Eric! I'll make sure we set it up so there's some fun involved too, not just dweebing with electronics. BartmanPDX 01-10-2007, 10:35 AM Ermmm...maybe not the one that's in your IP, bro! I do it all the time though:cool: I guess I should have stated "without diassembling the cab." :p Passinwind 01-10-2007, 11:07 AM I guess I should have stated "without diassembling the cab." :p Nah, my point was that if anyone's curious to hear what that amp sounds like into other cabs, they're welcome to try mine. Bumpin' this idea back to the top! :D If someone else doesn't step up soon, I'll be happy to set up something at the same place in Hood River. It'd still have to be 21-and-over, and most any Sunday could work. Start throwing dates out guys. March 25th is the only Sunday I have a gig booked for right now. arbitrary 02-09-2007, 01:10 PM We can still use the gym @ Kerri's school. That way it would be all ages. We just need to decide on a location and date. Nothing like a talkbass GTG in an oral school for the deaf. And no, thats not when deaf kids get oral. I already asked her that. I won't be around the last week of march, I have to fly to Boston with Kerri for wedding stuff. Her mom kinda freaked when she found out we got an openly gay unitarian minister. BartmanPDX 02-09-2007, 01:45 PM Either place is probably OK. I really liked the place in Hood River (lots of room, decent acoustics), but I respect the fact that having it there would prohibit the younguns from showing up. Then again, beer + gear is a good combination. ;) The only Sundays I wouldn't be able to come are the first one in March unless we did it early (scuba class that night) and the last one in April (Cozumel trip). :) barthanatos 02-09-2007, 05:58 PM Up for anything. Saturday preferred. Lokire 02-21-2007, 11:30 PM I'll throw my vote in for a Seattle gtg. As long as it isn't 21+ only ;) arbitrary 02-22-2007, 12:15 AM I'll drive up there, just need a location, location, location. My aunt lives up there, so I'm sure I could stay the night at her place. Maybe get a smallish carpool even. -Eric BartmanPDX 02-22-2007, 01:58 AM Someone needs to step up and find a good location. So far, we have: River City Bar, Hood River, OR. (site of last NW GTG) Pros: Great stage, plenty of room, can play good and loud, good beer. Folks who stay late may be able to jam there. Cons: It's a ways from Seattle, and an hour from Portland, and I'm pretty sure you have to be 21. Arbitrary's fiancee's school gymnasium in Portland Pros: All ages, plenty of room. Cons: It's a bit of an unknown. Acoustics? Power? Acceptability of having a bunch of bass-crazy buzzards descending on the place? Also, no beer. Anyone care to add some other options? Maybe we should make a poll, once we've figured out the possible locations. In theory, we could do a smaller GTG at my house in West Portland, but I seriously doubt my wife would be happy about it. I'd have to figure out how I could bribe her to take my daughter out of the house for the day. One of my best friends from college lives in Seattle, and I've been looking for a reason to go up there . . .
