reading all these top bassist lists im surprised to see mr zender overlooked in so many, especially the ones talking about modern bassists...has everyone forgotten how good jamiroquai were back in the zender glory days...i admit the mans gone somewhat of the radar and might not be as spread out as players like pino but the lines he played on the early jamiroquai albums are legendary...also, he might not of been as influential to the kids of the time as say flea may have been.but, he definately did his bit for the budding bassists (like me) playing today...to finish id like to leave you with two words...DEEPER UNDERGROUND

I just discovered the guy... I happen to be reading a post on here and someone suggested Jamiroquai. Awesome bass player... it'll give me something to work on for a while.

Trigg

I'll be honest, at first I didn't realize they had a male singer.

After seeing this thread I went and listened to a bunch of samples of Jamiroquai and the bass player sounds like any 70's Disco/Funk bass player. I don't hear anything new or different. If you like that style bass listen to some Bernard Edwards, Verdine White, and Anthony Jackson.

I disagree with that. True you can here there influence on him, but he has a style all his own.

I agree that Stuart Zender is clearly a product of 70s Disco/Funk influences, especially Bernard Edwards. Still, the man has got serious talent, I mean he did the first Jamiroquai CD at 17! I know Woodchuck, a monster himself, loves Zender, and gives him much love as an early influence. Woodchuck also is not the kind of brother to forget the originals either. In short, I think Zender deserves credit for bringing the old school to a new generation and putting some of himself into the mix too.:)

Zender is amazing. He's one of my biggest influences. I love his groove and feel. He's got great licks and can play some pretty fast stuff. He's a great slapper too. I can't say enough good stuff about this guy. He's underrated and doesn't get enough credit. I wish he was still putting out funky grooves.

He's obviously influenced by Bernard Edwards, but he took that influence and made it more "contemporaneous" if you will.
Amazing guy and a big inspiration of mine.

Could be wrong but is that not a keyboard synth line that Toby Smith came up with?? I know the bass doubles it live but i'm not sure if Zender played on this track. as i say could be wrong.

Zender is undoubtably great though, jamiroquai are not the same since him and toby smith left..:(

I do agree Zender was a more 'inspirational' player, but the current version of the band is just SMOKIN'!!!! Best they've ever been musically to my ears.

Where is he now? I know there was rumor of a rock band... Has anything new been released?

not sure, ask Woodchuck... he sent me a pic a while back of him and Stu in a pub having a beer, while 'chuck was on tour in Europe with Anthony David.

Zender only played on the first 3 albums - the later bassists I think sound more generic. I love the line on Music of the Mind off the first album

Stuart is playing on DU. He recorded his Warwick through an Ashdown combo. He quit the band shortly after the song was mixed. In fact, Mark Gooday, the owner of Ashdown is the one who told me he had quit about an hour after Stu told him.

This is a great song, but not a good representation of Stu's great playing. I"m pretty sure that is a a keyboard bass. Still it's jamming something terrible. What kind of bass is Stu playing these days??

Did Zender play on the track Virtual Insanity? The only Jamiroquai song I've heard. I love it, and the bass line is pretty fun to play.

Travelling Without Moving is a great album, but Return of the Space Cowboy and Emergency on planet earth are even better. And yes, Zender did play on Virtual Insanity.

Jamiroquai's new bassist, Paul Turner, is a fantastic player as well. Nick Fyffe didn't really do anything for me.

It sounds like keyboard bass to me as well - so I know he played on those tracks - but I heard that Jay wiped all of his bass lines off, that had been recorded after the 3rd album and so they aren't on the releases?

I used to really like them (in fact I'd say listening to them probably steered me towards bass before I took it up) but they lost me around Synkronised. I'm pretty sure Deeper Underground was recorded before the rest of that album (it was on the Godzilla soundtrack )

Anyway the first album is my favourite. Although Travelling without Moving is a good accessible album with lots of sing-alongs on it, so probably a good place to start for new fans.

Give it a chance! There's some great bass playing on the instrumental sections. I saw the vinyl copy of this for a tenner the other day and wish I'd picked it up - it's meant to be a lot better than the CD version.

I have become a big fan of Zender's slapping. In particular, I love Emergency on Planet Earth, Mr. Moon, and Scam. He really has a chunky, old school sound. His technique is old fashioned slap and pop, something I can actually do.:)

As stated the album was released after Stu left, but the track was recorded before. Supposedly the album was almost finished when he left.

This is the only "Band" i have ever wanted to play for and wish I could audition for them. I honestly think that Stu is one of the main reasons that I play bass. Whether that is because the I love the lines that jay "told" him to play, or he came up with them, who knows. I don't care. I would really like hear more about that time.

I know a friend who heard them record a bit of the travelling without moving album and in particular cosmic girl, who said that it sounded fat and immense while they were recording it. Then when it was released it was a bit more "soft" and with strings...at the end of the day it is Jay K's band and what he says goes, he is the one that is signed. Then again, the label is the one that can push the artist towards a certain direction.

Possibly one of my favourite albums for bass EVER...

Do you really want me to put some transcriptions up here for you so you can realise how good the bass parts are!?

If so, let me know, and I will take the time to write them out. I think then you may dig it a bit more.

I just noticed there are a lot more English posts on this thread than normal...probably because the earlier albums weren't pushed so much in the US. Was it about the 'travelling' album onwards that there was more of a promotion of the band in the US?

Traveling Without Moving is the only Jamiroquai CD to ever really be a hit in America. They are really a cult or musician's band in the USA.:( Most of that Acid Jazz sort of stuff stayed pretty underground since many Americans took it as a disco or smooth jazz rehash, and r&b had gone electronic and was being dominated by rap in the 1990's.

Chunky indeed.

So his style isn't really simple, but it is PHAT. It seems to rely on techniques provided by a wonderfully nuanced and natural perspective. Therefore The three Ts Zender possesses: TONE, TIME and TASTE. Additional to the other letters of the alphabet's attributes.

Can't agree more about Zender - great playing on Emergency and his tone on Space Cowboy is amazing. Does anyone know which model Warwick he's holding in the photo in the Space Cowboy sleeve? It looks like an 8-string...

I think Zender went off the radar about the same time he married that slapper from All Saints...:crying:

It's a custom Streamer.

Like some people have already mentioned, if you want to hear some of Stu's work, he only plays on the first three Jamiroquai albums: Emergency on Planet Earth, Return of the Space Cowboy, and Traveling without Moving. His playing, tone, and feel is AMAZING imho -especially on RotSC (check out Scam, Manifest Destiny, Mr.Moon, Stillness in Time...).

I'm glad he's out playing again. The stuff he's doing with Mark Ronson has a real James Jamerson motown vibe.

You can check him out in Ronson's latest video for the song "Oh My God". He even appears in the video (looking up Lily Allen's skirt):
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2037793523

This is also him playing on another of Mark Ronson's tracks, "Stop Me":
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=2034883926

A pic of him with that 8-string is on the left below, and the one on the right is him with his current bass, a '62 Fender...

Everybody loves Stu.

IMHO Nick Fyffe gets an unfair rap - people see him as the red-haired cousin of Jamiroquai bassists.

'Where do We go from Here' is seriously good.
Synchronised gets a lot of airplay on my car stereo.
