does anyone know what effects john had on the song bach prelude from the electric bass video. the bass sounded like there was sustain or an echo. what effects mimic this sound?

I don't know what John was using on that video. I just saw Patitucci last night with his trio and he is so amazing. Besides being a master musician, you can see he really enjoys playing. Same with his drummer Brian Blade the two of them were playing their asses off and digging it.

John Patitucci is the master.
That video is IMO very corny , though some nice playing.
Dont know about the effects , but some kind of reverb/echo.

I pulled out the Patitucci video and checked it out I would say it sounds a little like just room sound, like an room mic along with the direct on his bass. Or it might just be a touch of reverb was added in the mix to the DI bass. I don't think there are pedals in fact I would say the bass is run direct and John is coming from those room monitors on the floor behind him.

I kind of love some of his stuff, but i absolutely cannot stand that tone in the Bach vid.

I think its okay for what 1984. In the interview he says he was flown to NY and they did both the videos in one weekend. They were done in the NFL films studio. So I would say all things considered not bad.

I hate his early BG stuff (mistura fina , another world etc)though thats the best DB stuff , the early recordings and videos with Chick Corea Akoustick Band , Mike Stern , Joey Calderazzo , wonderful DB playing thoose early years.
For the electric stuff , his new recordings are great , Imprint , Communion etc. Maybe because its less "80's" and more jazz.
About the bach video , its a litle pretantious IMHO , the interpretation is not that great , and that makes it a bit corny.

Musically Patitucci just bugs me out.. Playing that solo stuff with six stringer, at the upper neck...me don`t like:hmm:
He is just so..something.. I had hes Bass workshop video in my computer when I was getting in the six stringer.. didn`t like that video eather..

I`m more Stu Hamm fan..

I really like JP because hes using the instrument as a solo instrument , i dont mean you cant do that with a 4'banger or so (i play 4's , not 6's) but JP uses a melodic and harmonic playing that most bass players dont , he plays the bass like a saxohphone or a piano , i really dig that.

John is a musician in other words composer, arranger, not just a bass player and that comes across in his bass playing. Yes, he has amazing chops, but the music is first and foremost. He uses the 6-string so he can play more of the arrangement of the tunes. I went to see him play a couple nights this week and he doesn't play his 6-string that much in these days he is mainly playing upright. The music his trio played ran the gammet from classical to Jazz and a Funk tribute to James Brown. But John did take some great solos has the chops to do anything on a bass he wants.
